What have I been doing this week?.........apart from raking up leaves which are falling fast now......
Around the country all WI's have their AGM in November. Ours was pretty straightforward as luckily people had come forward to take on the jobs of treasurer and secretary. The President was willing to stand again and everyone is happy about that - makes life easier if there is continuity and we don't have to vote! We had Coffee and cakes of course. No singing Jerusalem this month as apparently there's a lot of Covid positive tests going round the village...........I had no idea.
A couple of quizzes had been organised. The first one had us rummaging in our handbags - all WI ladies have handbags! we scored points depending on which things we were carrying around and I had hardly anything compared to some of the others ...........no stamps, no photographs, no perfumes, no real handkerchief and because I cut them all up the other week I didn't even have a loyalty card that gets stamped each time (like the Grape Tree and Greggs and the hairdressers used to do).
I walked home carrying a Holly Tree, bought off the bring and buy stall for £1. Not sure where I'm going to plant it yet but it needs straightening up when I put it in the ground.
I had a good morning out on Wednesday visiting more churches and picking up a couple of charity shop bargains in the South Suffolk town of Hadleigh. There were no charity shops there last time I visited (about 15 years ago) and now at least two.
First another Diary of an Edwardian Lady plate - this time for April, cost me £3. (The one I found earlier in the year from a boot sale was October) .This will appear on my seasonal shelf next year.
And most of a box of Charity Christmas cards, also for next year, for £1
I came home from Hadleigh via the Garden Centre and got my seed compost, and the seeds I'd ordered last week were sitting on the doorstep waiting for me, so I'm right ready for spring.
I didn't have any flowers last week but this week bought a bunch of mixed flowers that are colourful.
This week I'm grateful for
- Some good weather for gardening clearing and I even got the grass cut
- A nice morning out
- Getting ready for growing some food next year
There are Christmas fairs I could go to today but then I'd probably just feel guilty about not buying any of the craft things again............so maybe not. Perhaps I should make a start on the library books.
Have a good weekend. I'll be back Monday.
Sue
Well done to you for getting your grass cut. No chance of that here - not because we have had rain, but it doesn't dry out from overnight dew.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, if Covid is sweeping through your village, time to avoid those busy Christmas Fairs. It's been going through the schools here.
I was beginning to think I wouldn't get the grass cut again because of the dew but Thursday it was much dryer.
DeleteThe Christmas fairs are in different villages but I wouldn't be worried about going anyway.
A good week by the sound of it and yes keep away from crowds as Jennie says. W.I. it goes on forever, Jam and Jerusalem still? I note its theme song cannot be sung in this time of Covid.
ReplyDeleteNot a lot of Jam making nowadays but I enjoy singing Jerusalem and the National Anthem at WI. The other WIs I've been to recently didn't sing anymore.
DeleteI must lead a sheltered life so forgive my ignorance yet again, but why can't Jerusalem be sung with Covid hanging around? I always think that Jerusalem is such a rousing hymn.
DeleteSpit flying through the air Joan.
DeleteA precaution really. Although we all sit around talking so no idea what the difference is .
DeleteSorry, I am non the wiser.
DeleteYou have totally lost me Joan.
DeleteWhy would Jerusalem not be sung? Is there something going on with political correctness? If so I'm not aware of it.
DeleteAll that heavy breathing with singing that sends the bugs flying through the air! I remember there was some choir in the US at the very beginning of the pandemic that met for practice and the next week they were all sick.
DeleteThank you Stellamarina, I greatly appreciate your explanation.
DeleteSorry Joan I hadn't realised you didn't know about singing and covid
DeleteThat's okay Sue, I should have realised because John (Going Gently) had choir practice cancelled during covid. I'm a bit slow on the up take at the moment due to fatigue. Sometimes Im a bit like a dog with a bone if I don't understand anything.
DeleteLove the plate, I am a fan of her artworks. Wish I was that skilled.
ReplyDeleteIf I keep looking I might find the other 10!
DeleteI've got all 12 in my attic, waiting to go to the charity shop!
DeleteI don't carry photographs, or a diary anymore - that information is on my phone. And all my loyalty cards are stored there on an app. I do have a couple of stamps and a sewing card tucked in my purse though.
ReplyDeleteA Safety pin or sewing kit was another thing I didn't have!
DeleteWhat a delicately pretty plate...we have a Christmas Fayre in the village later today...I am in two minds as to whether to go at the moment. I need nothing so maybe staying home out of the way is best. x
ReplyDeleteI went out after all and saw youngest grandchildren in the church fair in their village
DeleteThat was a very good haul and I love the plate. xx
ReplyDeleteWonder what the chances are of finding the other 10!
DeleteWell - see a reply above - Scarlet has all of them . . .
Deletexx
The plate is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a teenager with my boyfriend (became my husband) cycling throu Hadleigh to Sudbury from Heathrow.
It sounded has thro your WI was good fun.
My GD made a surprise visit yesterday and she brought me some flowers it was nice to chat.
Enjoy your weekend Sue the weather is very damp here hopeful if will get better, lots of bazaars and things happening round the villages. I am hoping me wool for my blanket arrives today to keep me busy.
Hazel 🌈🌈
Bit of drizzle in the air today here and gloomy
DeleteHope your wool arrives
I read the other day that the WI is one of the few "clubs" still running on its old principles and loyalty to its members unlike, for example, the National Trust who have upset almost all its members with rule changes and expectations and ethos over the past two or three years.
ReplyDeleteI expect WI will go on forever!
DeleteIt will no doubt go on. The point is, will it make changes? The Girl Guides is another example. Still exists but with many new rules and principles.
DeleteThere are a lot of church christmas fairs starting here also I love to go as they usually have a white elephant section with things very reasonable. But I have to work so that's that.
ReplyDeletehave a great day reading
Cathy
I went out after all but home for lunch and reading this afternoon
DeleteHow lovely to find another one of those plates. We have been to a Christmas fayre in our Village this morning. The girls won lots of chocolate on the chocolate tombola, I wasn't so lucky on the bottle stall - a bottle of ginger ale, a bottle of hot chilli sauce and a very suspect looking bottle of sparkling wine!! However, it was raising money for our Church so all in a good cause. We have another next weekend.
ReplyDeleteI never ever win a thing on tombolas and only very rarely in a draw - just not lucky like that
DeleteI bought some autumn flowers last evening & am getting so much cheer from them. Flowers make all the difference, don't they? I love that little plate, Sue... it is darling! ~Andrea xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the yellow and orange on my table this weekend
DeleteI love your weekly round ups of what you have done all week Sue.
ReplyDeleteIt's the only way I can remember what I've done!
DeleteYour flowers are really pretty! I like that Handbag challenge- I think I would have done well at that!
ReplyDeleteI know people who moved to Hadleigh recently but I've never been there. The plate is really pretty.
One lady had so many different things in her bag - she said she even had spare underwear! - although that wasn't on the list of things to look for!
DeleteIt is wonderful when elections do not need to be held. Makes things so much smoother and no ruffled feathers.
ReplyDeleteCovid is picking up here again as well. Really just in my small corner, but it is really bothersome that there are those who just won't follow the rules.
God bless.
Hopefully the president will carry on for a couple more years - makes things so much easier
DeleteThe leaves are about 90% down now and I'm pretty much caught up with the removal and composting. It's 40 degrees during the day and below freezing at night. I would not find any of the quiz items in my pocketbook either. Your holy tree looks very healthy and should do well. You always find such good buys.
ReplyDeleteI was pleased to find the plate ready for next spring.
DeleteThe Holly tree has been planted - very slow growing so will take a while to get going
Oh how I love that plate!!! It is gorgeous. So do you just have the two plates from that collection? Are they hard to find?
ReplyDeleteOur leaves seem to have fallen overnight after the high winds we've been having. I don't like it. Everything is so bare and dark here now. It will - unfortunately be like this (except for snow, snow and more snow) until March or April - seems like a long time off!
I wasn't able to use a plate in my seasonal mantelshelf display at Clay Cottage because the hearth was tiles and the shelf narrow and I would have been afraid of it falling and smashing so I'd not really looked before this summer - so don't know if I will spot the rest - it will be a good challenge!
DeleteThe plate is really pretty and a bargain too. We have a tiny Holly tree at the allotment which is struggling to grow. It's about 6" high so I'm not going to get a Christmas decoration from it any time soon 😂 I'll probably have popped my clogs before it's big enough for some to be cut!
ReplyDeleteyour plate is pretty, would look nice on a wall in a small area.
ReplyDeleteI miss having grass ... I don't miss cutting it though :-)#
ReplyDeleteI love the plate, it's our birthday month and our birthday flowers. I was seemingly born on Primrose Day ... or so my Mum has been telling me since I was knee high to a Holly bush.
