Odds and Ends From a Week in Suffolk

I like bullet points!
  • Energy Regulator Ofgem may  have capped the unit price that gas and electric companies can charge but I am one of 1.7 million people who have no gas supply and have to buy oil and have no choice but to pay up whatever it costs. I've just ordered a top up of 500 litres and paid just over £338. Last November it was £300 and in June £225. Hope we get a mild spring! Buying more than 500 litres to get it cheaper is not an option as that would mean running the tank to empty - never a good plan.
  • Inflation is at it highest rate for over 30 years. There is no good news anywhere with regards to prices.
  • Had a letter to say my basic pension is going up by £4 a week, won't make a lot of difference as they'll just take more in tax from the County Council Spouses Pension. I am in the 'happy' position to receive just a fraction over the amount of income we are allowed before tax which is currently £12,570 a year.(and will be for the next 4 years - annoying)
  • When I don't sleep well I turn on the radio and listen to the World Service - it usually sends me off again quite quickly but this week I heard a "fact" about the USA - did you know that 25% of the population there think the last election was fixed by satanic pedophiles! Really?
  • Storm Dudley missed Mid Suffolk during the day on Wednesday and it was lovely and mild and sunny for much of the day, if only we'd not had lots of rain earlier in the week it would have made a good day for weeding but the clay soil is soggy and the weeds would have come up with a great clump of mud attached.
  • When I wrote about The Hovel in the Hills and Elizabeth West's other books on the 11th Feb., I said I would email the publishers of Patch in the Hills (as Miki had already done) to ask if they would re-print it . This was the reply............................

Dear Sue,

Many thanks for contacting us, and your request to reprint A Patch in the Forest by Elizabeth West. We are currently reviewing the manuscript files and images and will let you know if we’re able to bring out a new edition.

With all best wishes,

So you never know, we might be able to purchase a copy for less than £55 sometime in the future.

  • Have you ever woken up in the night thinking that the shoes you've just bought are the wrong size? I expect not.                                                                                                                               I sent for some Earth Spirit shoes,

Cleveland Womens Navy Leather Shoethey're what I've worn all summer every summer for the last many years, really good for wearing without socks and very comfortable  and no shoe shop visit needed and if I can get them online at this time of the year, they are always much cheaper. So when they arrived I didn't even try them on, just checked they were the size ordered and put them in the cupboard. Then woke up wondering if they really were the size I needed. ( I have annoying feet- one bigger than the other and wide).  I even had to get out of bed and try them on.......at 3am! (They were the right size and then I went back to sleep)

  • Storm Eunice yesterday -one of the biggest storms in decades 65 - 80mph winds - heck. I got as prepared as possible and felt glad I didn't still live at the cottage with the responsibilities of trees liable to fall. The worst of the storm arrived just after noon. Over went the Olive tree in it's pot and 2 large panes from the greenhouse flew out and somehow landed without breaking. The trellis was going back and forwards in an alarming way - tried to prop it up to no avail. Then  I noticed the trellis arch at the corner of the house was leaning more than ever - it's been propped up since I moved in- if it fell it could land on the satellite dish wire or the fence or the newly planted apple tree. So I pulled it down. Texted Brother-in-Law to tell him I had a new collection of jobs for him!

This week I am grateful for

  1. Not needing to go out during the stormy weather
  2. A cosy safe home
  3. Shoes for summer
  4. Not too much damage in the wind
 Have a good weekend.
I shall be back on Monday
Sue

  1. I'm so very glad you didn't get too much damage yesterday. It was a bit scary at times, wasn't it?

    2. I've seen further down comments that you have no boiler - or have you been able to get it working by now. I do hope so - it's a bit chilly to have no heating.

I forgot to say, I managed to get Hovel in the Hills, Garden in . . . and Kitchen in . . . from Amazon, not terribly expensive, and I've just started the first one. It's very engaging.

  2. Glad you survived the storm intact. Yes, I recently got up in the early hours of the morning to check something I'd ordered online the day before had been done correctly. And returned to sleep soundly afterwards. I decided that of I didn't check there and then, I'd lay awake all night fretting! Question:if my order HAD been wrong, or your shoes incorrect, would we have stayed awake fretting, OR said "can't do anything till morning" and gone back to sleep again?

  3. Many times I have had to get up in the night as a thought has passed into my mind in the early hours! We had it quite mild up here in West Yorkshire and only our little obelisk is on the lean again with the wind.

  4. So pleased you did not have any real problems with the storm like you I had a pane of glass. We are so lucky for some have had terrible damage I just hope they get insurance.

  5. Yep, I'm another one who has to get up in the middle of the night to check something out! If I don't I can never get back to sleep.
Glad you survived the storm relatively unscathed, Sue, we were lucky too with no real disruption. It's raining again today quite heavily so I won't be going far.
Good news on the Elizabeth West books I think. I've checked the library as well as CS for her books to no avail. I suppose they have been out of print for a long time.

    1. The older ones are often cheap online -it's just the Patch in the Forest that is really expensive. Hope you are lucky finding some

  6. Oh you made me laugh, waking up in the middle of the night and thinking of something like that AND then having to find out for sure is something that I would definitely do ... and have done in the past.

Nice to hear that A Patch in the Forest might be available again, there seems to be a lot of people really wanting a copy ... but no-one wanting to pay £55, I wonder why not ;-)

  7. I live in the US and I have never met that 25% I think I may be lucky I haven't. When I wake up in the night, I do the same I will wake up from a sleep thinking did I lock the door? Not that anyone would bother here but I have to check.
We had a wind Thursday into Friday no damage or loss of power but so cold you could not be out in it.

  8. It is alarming that here in the U.S. an online fringe group now seems to have so many believers. A few months ago some of them showed up in Dallas believing that JFK and JFK Jr. we’re going to appear! How do people become so brainwashed by online garbage.

  9. My wife and I love reading your blog about life in Suffolk! Possibly, the comment of the 25% may have come from a conspiracy theory group whose posts sometimes come from enemy nations. Being American, we too have never met anyone even close to the 25%.

  10. Fringe groups seem to come in all sizes and forms. Each year we hear about yet another new faction. Welcome to America. Oil prices are rising again and are predicted to continue upward. Last week I checked the price and found it was $1.69.9. My oil tank is 150 gals. and I have two that will need topping off soon at the halfway point. I will buy EW's book and it is good to know they will consider reprinting. I like your new Summer shoes. They look very comfy and good for walking. Thank goodness there was no glass breakage on your lovely new greenhouse. The wind was strong and luck was on your side.

  11. As with Cathy and David, and having traveled cross country a few times since June, I'm not aware of that 25% in the US. No one I've come across, anyway.

So glad you didn't have any major damage from your storm. --Elise

  12. I've been hearing a lot about the big storms you've had there. I hope your damage wasn't too bad. It's wonderful that your brother-in-law can help out.

Here in the U.S we do hear conspiracy theories that are spread on the internet. I have not met anyone that actually follows those beliefs. However, the attack on the capital a year ago was a frightening example of the extreme political beliefs some groups have.

  13. I am glad that you did not have damage.

Hey the conspiracy theories from the United States are in Canada as well. Right now they are removing occupiers from our countries capital. Many of them seem to think that our Prime Minister "stole" the election. Things are crazy.

    God bless.

They are a both of very strange people here in the US. As an outsider I can't say I understand them. Sadly my BIL is one of them. Good thing they live several hundreds of miles from us and I don't have to listen to him lol

  18. Storms are concerning. We have protection from the west winds. Which makes me very glad. We have a large pin oak tree that leans over the house. I like it for the summer shade but wind storms get me praying over it.
    Stay well

  19. I'm glad your shoes fit. I can hardly fathom that two panes of glass went flying and didn't break! You're born under a lucky sign. How long did the winds last? Were they done by the time you went to bed?

    1. I was so surpised to see the panes of glass laying there unbroken - they are toughened but still very very lucky. They are only held in by wire W shaped clips and were easy to replace with two people

  20. PS: the satanic thing? Yes. There was a tremendous flap in my area under #savethechildren. It was crazy. A adjunct professor posted this copy and paste thing. I was horrified that she would have posted such bullshit. I said, "This isn't even true," and posted a bunch of evidence to counter it. Her response was (and I'm quoting) "I don't care if it is true or not! This needs to stop!" This from a well educated woman. I was dumbfounded. I told her that her reply made no sense at all. She ignored me.
