I said the Super Mama tomatoes were Huge and this is how big Huge is. 4 tomatoes on the scales and over a kilo/2½ lb. Four in a bag in the freezer is enough for one batch of my Red Hot-as-you-like Chutney
and I've put two bags in - one skinned before and one to test out that they are easier to skin after freezing, which someone claimed.
Just need the peppers to turn to a proper red and buy some red onions and red chillies and a day with nothing happening to get it made.
Back Tomorrow
Sue
I've just been reading on the BBC website about the farmers' crops being smaller and "wonky-shaped" due to lack of rain. Small-scale gardeners who water diligently, like you, can still produce good crops. These look gorgeous! My peppers are growing, but still green!
ReplyDeleteDon't believe anything the BBC tell you Angela. They spout rubbish on all subjects, particularly farming and tomato growing!
DeleteI saw a farmer in Suffolk comparing the onions that had been watered to some at the edge of the field that had missed the huge watering system - quite a difference.
DeleteWow! Those are somewhat ginormous. Virtually free chutney to follow. One of the churches I visited yesterday had home made preserves and pickles for sale - tempted by the apricot and ginger, but not at £3.50 a pot.
ReplyDeleteI could make them with my own ordinary onions but it spoils the red colour!
DeleteI can't remember exactly what I charged for chutneys when I made to sell but it was over £2 back then especially if there were bought ingredients.
They are enormous!
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see what the crops are like this year, and next year. The double whammy of the drought (due to man made climate change) and lack of workers to pick (due to Brexit) is quite something. Still never mind the new PM will be able to turn the ship around!
Sorry, I have politicized your tomatoes!
Political tomatoes - who knew?! Although a few have been thrown at them in years past!
DeleteNow THOSE are some nice tomatoes! Your chutney sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteIt's my favourite and goes with many things
DeleteThose are nice tomatoes there is nothing like fresh tomatoes this time of year.
ReplyDeleteCathy
I'm eating the small and freezing the giants
DeleteWow, impressive and very satisfying to know they are home grown isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
No bought tomatoes would be this big!
DeleteThose tomatoes looks so delicious-yum. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI hope they cook up well for chutney and relish
ReplyDeleteYour tomatoes are amazing. I've not seen tomatoes that big and perfect in a very long time. Cooking relish or chutney fills the kitchen with a wonderful aroma of fresh vegetables and spices melding. My Uncle grew Big Boy tomatoes and one year he had a big crop so he made relish. It was delicious. His relish made excellent Christmas gifts.
ReplyDeleteYears ago when the children were at home they would moan loudly about the vinegar smell but I could never notice it in the kitchen
DeleteWonderful toms. I’ve grown Mamande toms outside for the first time, not quite as big as yours but all flesh and taste so sweet, tomato salad every meal.
ReplyDeleteMarmande are an older huge variety. I think the Super Mama are new this year
DeleteNice tomatoes. We have a red one that's supposed to be bigger. My daughter bought them and they are still in pot she bought them in. Delicious though. We've not had rain for awhile either.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking my yellow tiger blush tomatoes best of all.
DeleteWhat whoppers you have there Sue! x
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! What a cracking crop. Arilx
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonderful gardener, Sue! My brother is the gardener in my family and luckily he shares his produce with me and my sister as we water the plot when he travels. Your tomatoes are large and his are tiny - lovely grape tomatoes that are so delicious! I have also gotten some lovely zucchini and enjoyed the yummiest zucchini, grape tomatoes, red onions, and garlic saute for dinner last night!
ReplyDeleteWow! Those are beauties!
ReplyDeleteWhat super tomatoes! I never knew you could grow them so big. Ours are tiny but ripening at long last 👍
ReplyDeleteBeautiful tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteMine aren't nearly that big, but I picked my first ripe tomatoes today!! They are soooooooo good!
ReplyDeleteThose are brilliant tomatoes, wow what a size! I never had any success freezing tomatoes whole the few times I tried it. Thawing just ruined them even for sauces as the end flavour was watery or I had to cook them for so long to reduce the water content the flavour was not as fresh, so in the end I always used the tomatoes to make sauces and either bottled them or froze them.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve had a huge crop this year.
ReplyDeleteHalve them raw, face down in oven trays, drizzle of oil and salt.
Roast at 180° for 30 mins.
Remove, cool, pinch off skins, box up in margarine tubs and freeze.
I can’t tell you how useful they are for bologneises, chillis, soups etc
We had to do four trays last night just to keep up with the glut!
