Another Vegetarian Taste Test

Way before Christmas I went to Lidl to get a vegetarian nut roast thing that they only have in for a short time each year. DiL recommended them a few years ago. But when I saw these similar but individual roasts I thought they would be better as I could always use them later if Christmas plans changed....which they did.

It was only after eating one that I looked at the ingredients - with my glasses on - Oh dear, it also had chick peas and brown lentils as well as hazelnuts. Luckily they were far enough down the ingredients list and didn't upset my stomach but I shall pass the others onto DiL just in case.

The one I ate was OK, nothing special just a soft and squidgy fairly tasteless 'thing' and I can't remember how much they cost but as they won't have them again until November I just have to remember not to buy them then.

And Yippee - now up to 800 on the followers. Hello and welcome and thank you - it had been stuck on 798 for months!

  1. What a shame - it's always useful to have some little 'specials' to hand. - but not if they have the potential to upset the digestive system!
Congratulations on hitting 800 followers! xx

  2. I had that same Lidl nut roast for my Christmas lunch....it was alright, if a bit too oniony for my taste, but as you say, a soft squidgy texture. I could certainly (and have) make a nicer nut roast myself. I didn't know chick peas and lentils upset you.

    1. It's not something I would normally mention and not a serious effect anyway. I usually avoid all pulses especially chick peas.

  3. While the idea of a nut roast has been around for decades, I never met one I couldn't easily give a pass to. There is so much good vegetarian food that I wonder at attempts like that to pass off a meal as resembling something made with meat. It doesn't work for meat eaters, and seldom works for vegetarians either.

    1. I used to make my own individual veg loaf things but they were a bit fiddly . I keep hoping I'll find something easy and good - but haven't yet

  4. "Boughten" stuff can be so disappointing. What a shame it had unwanted ingredients (for your tum anyway). One boughten thing I can recommend is the pack of Frozen Paella with Choritzo in from Tesco. It was the only thing which got me wanting to eat again when I had Covid and lost my appetite. It is tasty, has lovely big prawns in, and chicken too, and a pack will do me 3 or 4 meals.

    1. I avoid pulses, not a serious problem but best not eaten. The frozen paella sounds good

    1. So many of the vegetarian things I've tried have been bought once and never again

  6. As a vegetarian I usually avoid those but now with Parkinson's I cook less and "heat and eat" more. I enjoyed Morrison's Chestnut and Cranberry offering immensely but agree with you on the general quality of these things. The best I found came from Cook, but then at a price!

    1. I try to mainly cook from scratch but keep trying these shove-in -the-oven things - very few are any good

  7. Anything containing pulses of any kind has a tendency to upset my digestion, annoying because I know they are part of a healthy diet.

  8. I bought prepared veggie burgers once and did not like them. They were tasteless and the texture seemed odd.

  9. I think it's worth trying these sort of things, I have found a couple that were good, but by and large they are usually quite bland, which is a shame as they would make a good part of a quick meal if they were tasty. Oh well, at least you know now.

    1. Had to be tried but won't bother again. I'll stick with their nut loaf instead next Christmas

  10. If you don't try something, you never know if you will like it or pass it on to someone who does.

    God bless.

  11. I think I will stick to my meat diet! Although, having said that, I do make a nut rissole that I really enjoy :)

  12. “Shove in the oven” things - what a great expression.

I also tend to cook from scratch but am tempted by yellow stickers - but have had very bad luck with SITO things.

We do eat meat but tend to eat very small portions of meat with lots of veg, grains and pulses. Love pearl barley with Turkey and green Thai paste in a burger.

  13. Sorry they didn't work out. I always look forward to the vegetarian tries - gives me ideas for when I come back! Sadly most vegetarian food in the US is fake meat products. I'd love more veggie-forward foods, but that doesn't seem to be a thing over here.
