From the Library Van this month......................

.........................................and other stuff


.A lovely haul of library books from the library van yesterday. All ordered for free for me to pick up
I seem to be back to crime again, there are 6 here...........Two Agatha Christie's that I've never read, and brand new books by Chris Nickson and Deborah Crombie - both authors I enjoy and regularly check for on Fantastic Fiction to see when they produce something new. Plus the Martin Edwards book about Golden Age Crime Writers which looks a mighty tome.
Two books are about wartime Home Front. I'm not sure about the one at the bottom of the heap -London 1945, I think I've borrowed it before and struggled with it. The other "Eggs and Anarchy" is subtitled The Remarkable Story of the Man Tasked With the Impossible: To Feed the Nation at War.
 The Persephone at the top is The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sherriff and for light relief I have Ronald Blythe's  "The Artists Garden" and even lighter "Honeycote" by Veronica Henry.
These should keep me entertained for 4 weeks.........or more.

Collected Colin at 8pm last night, he is home for the weekend ............3 Loud Cheers. Eldest daughter, son in law and Jacob of course, will be arriving later today for part of the weekend and youngest daughter, OH and Florence will be popping over. Son and DIL are away........sadly.

    You are so lucky Sue, if we reserve books from the mobile library it costs us 50p a book, I read at least 8 books a month so it would add up and its something I am not prepared to pay.

      over 60 we get free reservations.
      And 12 books at a time, which is more than I can read.

    Here our reservation fees are £1-00 per book for adults, 70p for over 60s, free for under 18s. If the title you want is an inter library loan, there's an added charge of £3-20!
    We don't have any mobile libraries, so that fee doesn't even include getting the books close to our homes.
    This wasn't a problem until our local authority took almost all of our library hours down from at least 40 hours per week to 18! Now there is no evening opening and just 3 hours on Saturday mornings. It's become very difficult for anyone infirm or disabled to get to a library, so in their wisdom the 'powers that be' also closed the Housebound Reader Service!

    Really happy to hear that Col is home for the weekend. Have a wonderful time, enjoy Jacob and Florence, take lots of photos and make loads of lovely memories! X

      Libraries here are no longer run by the County Council but by a Community interest group, part funded by the council but most voluntary

    We used to have to pay £1 per reservation, but now they are free unless transferred in on an inter-library loan.
    I am borrowing loads at the Monet (more than I can read), as our lovely library building is threatened with closure. The plan is to scale it down and move it to the top two floors of the council offices (which used to be in the beautiful Guildhall, but are now in an ugly 1970s block.)

    That's a good pile to get through Sue.
    When is your favourite time to read?
    I only read at bedtime although I would love to find a quite couple of hours during the day to sit and have a cuppa and a bit of a read. That isn't ever going to happen in this chaotic house and Andy would probably ask if I was ill or something.
    Yay....Col made it home for the weekend. I am so pleased for you both.

      I usually just read in the evenings, never in bed, sometimes afternoons if the weather is awful and I'm feeling tired

    Happy Easter. Hope Col's strong enough to enjoy the family. I've been moving all my books, finally giving the eldest a proper sized bedroom and moving my library to the box room. Gone for boring old ikea billy, and the cd version gnedby, all oak veneer and totally flexible with lots of small units I can fix around the space available. The Carnegie award shortlist is out, so that's my reading pile for the next few weeks. Hope to get on read this weekend, on a huge campsite with several other families about as different from camping at your old place as it's possible to get! Enjoy your weekend, the book sort will wait, but grandkids won't!

    Greetings and a belated Happy Birthday wishes!
    I enjoyed reading about the library van...such a wonderful service. Sadly our mobile library service is no longer operating here in my town in the states. I loved seeing it on the streets and knowing it was bring hours of pleasure to the folks who might be homebound.
    I love the books published by Persephone! You're so fortunate to have them available to you from your library. I order used copies at abebooks.com. I recently read Fortnight in September and very much enjoyed that gentle read.
    I enjoy your blog. I have such pleasant memories of a trip to Wales (my ancestral homeland)a few years back. Hopefully I'll return some day soon.
