First Harvest

Best thing about having a garden and growing things to eat?

It's harvesting the first of the year.

Delicious pink forced rhubarb.............I made a crumble.

(Writing this has made me a remember a long ago friend who wouldn't cover rhubarb to force it because it was "unnatural"!)

Many thanks for comments yesterday. Blogger was playing up when I tried to reply to some comments. Internet connection kept disconnecting too. If I vanish that will be why.

Back Tomorrow

  1. Cooking isn't "natural" either but forcing and cooking make it super delicious!

    1. I've always put an old dustbin over rhubarb to get some early. It does it no harm and such a glorious colour

  3. Look at that delicious rhubarb! Amazing colours! The only thing I have at the moment is the herbs that are now growing nicely. The chives are tall enough to start cutting and the oregano will soon be there too. Fresh herbs are so much nicer.
Enjoy your rhubarb. What will you make with it?

    1. We could do with more rain, didn't get much in the end. Yes I managed to snip a few chives the other day to make a potato salad.

  4. That rhubarb looks delicious and juicy, just want to dip it in sugar and bite into it!
I just had problems with the internet, thought it was the router but it turned out as a fault on the BT line. I was dreading having to phone and battle them but the Lady in India checked it out straight away and saw that there was a fault on the line outside our property. The fault was put right within a few hours despite being told it would take three days! So, for once, three cheers to BT!

    1. That certainly makes a change from their usual lack of speed

  6. I have never been enamored with rhubarb. My mom loved it and grew it. My daughter has it growing and I have eaten some things she's made with it. But not my favorite ingredient.

  9. That is a glorious colour Sue - we've never forced ours but looking at that it may be time for a change!

  10. My mother always forced a plant for an early feed. Rhubarb Crumble knocks spots off Apple Crumble. Hot with cold vanilla ice cream.

  11. WOW! I think the rhubarb in my garden is still buried under the snow. It's been snowing for three days now. I've really had enough. Someone is having a laugh at us

  12. My grandma called it pie plant and did she make pies! Knott's Berry Farm, an amusement park close to Disneyland has what they call their Famous Chicken Dinner, and there is always a tiny bowl with rhubarb jam with it. I love it!
    Yours looks wonderful.

  13. My mom liked to make rhubarb pie but I could never quite get over the sourness of it. It's pretty, though! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  14. Boo hoo! My rhubarb is still under two feet of ice and snow. I won't be harvesting any - forced or not - any time soon!

  15. Yum rhubarb crumble. I can hardly wait until all our snow melts and our plants start coming. Though I did find a couple of packages frozen while cleaning out the chest freezer. Must get those and the blueberries used in the next little while.

    God bless.

  16. Nothing wrong with forcing a rhubarb plant for early, sweet pickings. Now my five plants are happy in their new location one or two will be forced each year.
