The Fourth Drawer Down

The fourth drawer down of my "dresser" was very heavy to open. Time to have a sort out.

Blimey, its a wonder the bottom of the drawer hadn't fallen out

I unpacked the drawer and in it I found
  • Nearly a dozen various screwdrivers
  • A huge box full of various screws and other bits
  • A Huge adjustable spanner - too heavy to hold let alone use!
  • A small adjustable spanner
  • A couple of small spanners
  • 2 penknives
  • 3 tape measures
  • A tin full of drill bits
  • 2 rolls of parcel tape
  • A roll of duct tape
  • 3 rolls of some sort of other tape - electrical?
  • A sat nav given to me ages ago that I've still not used
  • 9 hooks that fit on a picture rail -  but there is no picture rail here
  • A roll of sellotape
  • A box full of keys - for what?
  • 4 padlocks with keys attached
  • A padlock with no keys
  • Some pads that go on the bottom of chair legs
  • Odd electrical bits supposedly for the conservatory heater
  • A heavy thing that I think is a towing loop?
  • My little hammer that I used to use with the corking tool when I made wine
  • PLUS random other odds and ends

It's tidier and weighs less now............ quite a few things went into the bin including the Phillips screwdriver that's lost its point! The massive spanner is in the garage and lots of things have gone into the car-boot box. And I will learn how the sat-nav works sometime soon.

Back Tomorrow

  1. I have one like that, except it's the third drawer down. I think they are obligatory in most households and usually only get tidied when they can no longer be closed. X

    1. I need to empty out that box of screws and bits as it weighs a ton

  2. I do too, the top drawer of one of the dressers. I suppose I ought to give it another sort out soon.

  5. I have one of those drawers except it's not screws, pliers etc mine is paper, card, and bits for card making all put into little envelopes. I have also got a kitchen drawer that has no end of bits and pieces that will come in handy one day.

  6. Mine is the third drawer down, I think we all have a drawer like that. We also have a understair cupboard that holds all the rubbish we can't find a place for.

    1. There's even more in the workshop.
The dialect quiz you mention on your blog was very accurate for me

  9. I am having "a grand clear-out" at the moment and just tackled the end cupboard and drawer of the kitchen dresser. I seem to have 6 unopened rolls of binbags and 3 packs of barbecue kebab skewers; some bendy straws I bought when the grandchildren were little (they are now 13) and several allen keys. Also several "useful" lengths of used string (I seem to be turning into my father) and a variety of tools - and yes, a large adjustable spanner which was used to knock a nail in when I couldn't find the hammer (which has now surfaced). I have decided to make a small bag for useful "indoor" tools so that I don't have to delve into the depths of the shed every time I need to find a screwdriver (and which obviously never seem to be put back anyway). The shed - now that's a whole different story.

    1. Well at least you have enough bin bags for clearing it all out!

  10. At least there were no 'pieces of string too short to use'.

I think most people have a drawer like that, I know I do. At at car boot sales it's this type of box or drawer that everyone loves a rummage through. I know because I always make one up out of all the little odds and sods that we have. It keeps the men busy while their wives splash out on books and clothes :-)

    1. I'm still undecided what to do with the workshop stuff. Too much for a car boot sale

    2. How about a 'Garage Sale'. Your children could come and help you run it. Lots of local advertising would pull people in I'm sure.

  11. That looks so familier! I have one of those in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. It is amazing what you can find in a junk drawer!

  12. Oh everyone has a drawer like that for all the bits and pieces that don't belong in another drawer!

    1. If you are in the USA then a spanner is probably known as a
wrench and sat nav is what we Brits call satellite navigation and it tells us the way to go when we are driving in our cars and is placed on the dashboard in front of us. I have never used one.

    2. Thank you Rachel, didn't see the question. The huge adjustable spanner is that great big metal thing just right of centre of photo

  14. I have a drawer like that. Most of the things are useful but anything that isn't has long gone. I am not a keeper or a hoarder of things I don't need. I cleared out multiple drawers like this in my mother's house and I thought no, that is not going to happen to anyone else for me.

  15. Doesn't everyone's fourth drawer down contain the same stuff? It's like we were given a list to memorise in Home Economics at school and we've dutifully filled this drawer to the brim with Life's Essentials.

I love tea-towels, especially the arty types, and have enough to run a soup kitchen. There's a company here in Australia that commissions artists to do limited edition print runs for their tea-towels, resulting in Affordable Art if you choose or Functional Art if you're not too precious about them. I have been gifted a couple but I also bought one and had it made into my kitchen blind. Appropriately enough, the brand is Third Drawer Down!

  16. We have 2 of those drawers in the kitchen. I organized one of them last year, and it's probably due again. The other one contains most of the tools. I just can't bring myself to tackle it! Thanks to Debra for asking what a spanner is! Love to hear the differences in our language. Pete was very impressed (or maybe just a little impressed) when I called the vegetable in our Chinese food tonight "mangetout."
