Feeling Happy in the First Week in October

This is an unashamedly HAPPY post!

It feels like I've had a really good week. Seem to have got myself organised and motivated and enjoyed everyday - despite the weather turning colder on Wednesday and having to get back into leggings - much prefer sunshine and shorts.

Thought it would be good to list this weeks achievements

Got the front hedge cut again....BiL said I hadn't taken enough off in July ..... annoyingly he was right.

Cleaned out the big chest freezer  - Oh My Goodness - there's enough food for a siege!!  I'd just been adding boxes of roast mixed veg ....there are 20 in there now.........20! plus chicken thighs, chicken breasts, sausages, belly pork slices, tortilla wraps, boxes of home made meal portions, cheap pizzas and boxes of homemade pizza topping, a few bags of fruit(some from 2017!), butters of all sorts, bread rolls, a loaf of Gluten Free bread from last year!, some cheap bread and some granary bread, home made herbie bread rolls and bought burger baps, peppers and tomatoes and mange tout peas from the garden, bought peas and mushrooms, fish chips and veggie burgers and a chocolate gateaux waiting for a party!. And lurking at the bottom a chicken that I bought for last Christmas - waiting for visitors - no that's not true, I've had plenty of visitors but have just gone right off cooking for them. So I cooked this old tasteless chicken and have been eating it every day since!

This week I also got back to eating better - that is just 1 slice of bread and NO CAKES, stopped having toast instead of a meal and banned peanut butter from the house. I'm very overweight and had added 5 lb in the last few months..... need to lose 4 stone to get me back to what I was in 1979 when we got married or 1½ to get me back to 1995 the lowest I'd been since child # 3 was born 1987. In my defence I am 3 stone lighter than my heaviest ever which was in around 2000 and had been a steady weight for 10 years. I can't do any slimming groups - they would just make me cross- they don't work for me. My weight has see-sawed ever since I was 16 - so I know what to do ......I just need to EAT LESS and MOVE MORE. So..............

...........Tried to use my bike.....unused for 2½ years...... and nearly went A over T over the handlebars because the chain had come off and was jammed in the back cogs. I got chain back on and oiled it and the rusty cogs and the brakes - by which time it had started to rain so I had to put it back in the garage. Two days later I tried again and did half a mile one way and back and quarter of a mile the other way and back so at least I've not forgotten how to ride it. I'm sending for a sheeps wool seat cover because even though I've got a large squishy seat riding still aggravates the base of my spine.
The Parish Council have organised  The Hakluyt Loop (Hakluyt was an explorer and writer in the C16 who I'd never heard of until I moved here, he was a vicar of this parish for 20 years). It's a 6 mile cycle route linking all parts of the village (it's just on ordinary roads, so they haven't done anything really except put up a few signs ) - there is a grand opening at the village hall next month - with refreshments! - I hope to be there on my bike 🤞, (it's 2 and a bit miles from home - with a steep hill), with camera - weather permitting - November being a tad unpredictable.

Then of course there was the blog post that was part serious and part fun and got lots of comments.
A bit more tidying and cleaning in the greenhouse and lots of sport watching on TV.

Yep........a Good Week


This week I've been grateful for
  • The Fun of blogging
  • A not-too-busy swimming pool.
  • Books..... both my own and borrowed
  • The enjoyment of watching world class athletes on TV

  1. The contents of my freezer are a big reason why I am not Brexit food panicking to this post made me smile a lot!
    You can do it, Sue. As you say, eat less (or eat differently) and move more. Slimming clubs are not necessary (although they can be very helpful if that's your thing) and I know you can do it . . .

  3. I gave up sliced bread a few weeks ago and found it much easier than I thought it would be. It was just a habit for me to have two or three slices with everything! Good luck and glad you had a happy week. I hope I do. I have to drive to Stansted in a minute and not looking forward to it.

  6. That is wonderful Sue, I feel uplifted just reading how well your week went :) Good luck with the cycling. I would love to do similar but take your life in your hands just crossing the road round here. At least you will be fine in any future food shortages! xx

    1. It felt like a good week, I love cycling and used to regularly bike everywhere when we lived at the smallholding - here there is nothing to bike to - but at least the little roads are so quiet.

  8. A lovely happy post and good luck with the bike journey.
    I have finished by latest crochet blanket and not sure what to do now I need to make a few things for the Christmas Knit and Knatter stall that are quick to make.

  9. Good morning and thank you for this post, just what I needed to read! I've been in a bit of a slump recently, no reason in particular, just the '2 year thing' we talked about a while ago. It was so good to read that you'd had a happy week.
    I love my bike and have used it quite a lot since my husband died.I feel such a sense of freedom on it. Hope you enjoy the cycle ride in your village!
    I only have a tiny freezer, so nothing like your stock of food, but even then, I forget what's in it!Be round to yours after Brexit then!

    1. I've always loved cycling, but so out of practice. I'm OK with 2 miles so will just keep going a bit further each time until I can do 6 which I used to do regularly - although that was 6 years ago!

    I think I'd get cross at any weight watching club too ... paying to get weighed is not my idea of fun. I'd much rather weigh myself and tuck £5 in my back pocket 🤣🤣

    Good for you for getting back to cycling, I've been considering doing just the same. I wonder if I can teach Suky to sit in a basket on the front?

  16. Good to read your happy post. Timely, too as I need to lose weight myself and keep happy. Just back from a long journey overseas where I did a lot of walking and schlepping of bags (not all mine). Now if I could just get my twitchy back and not always reliable knees to agree to upping my moves. Ah, well, use or lose it, yes?

  18. Sounds like you have had on all a good week. I have felt so much better too. Walking has really helped me, that and watching what I eat, cutting out all bread as well.

    Your freezer contents sound much like ours which is dire need of a sort out too. Perhaps inspired by you I ought to put that on my To Do list this week.

    I haven't ridden my bike in ages, just doesn't feel safe riding it round here on the busy roads unfortunately.

    1. Luckily there are plenty of quiet little roads, just nowhere to bike to. I've always preferred cycling to walking although walking is much better for exercise

    I went to stay with friends last week for 5 days and came back 2lbs heavier. It doesn't take long does it?

  21. A lovely happy post, Sue! It really cheered my up, I've been a bit down in the dumps today. I'm with you on the slimming clubs, although they are great for lots of people. I've always weighed myself on Wednesdays anyway, so I'm watching what I eat and doing more exercise. Slowly but surely the weight is coming off :)

  22. You seem to be very happy and it made me happy as well. I am trying to up my step count, but seem to be stuck on the 10,000 step mark. Hopefully by the end of this month I will be doing more on average. That should help this slightly round body become a bit more back to where I feel the best.

  24. Great post Sue. I know paying to get weighed isn't what I would wish but I can't lose weight by myself. I'm better going to class and 'owning it' as the youngsters say. I'm really pleased you are in a happy place. Chest freezers are so called because they are full of hidden treasure!!!

  25. I'm laughing at you banning peanut butter - I've been known to eat a few spoonfuls while waiting for the kettle to boil because it's right there in the cupboard in front of me.

    I'd be happy to be the weight I was before Thomas was born but fear I'm a lost cause because unlike you I've no willpower and cannot ban anything from the house or give up cake or chocolate!

    The bike route sounds nice. Looking forward to seeing some photos and reading some more happy posts. xx

  26. I've banned peanut butter for a long time and bread was added to the list, too. I'm still not at my best possible weight, but I'm pleased to say my doctor has stopped lecturing me about my weight. Definitely worth the sacrifice of peanut butter. Though I do miss it!

  27. Busy week you've had. I need to defrost of chest freezer. Its mostly full but don't have many old items in there. Cleared that 2 yrs ago. Sometimes I wish I had a bicycle. Been years ago since we had them. Have a good week!

  28. I've got to do the freezer too. I do well but then lose focus. I've yo-yoed up and down in weight for a long time, now I just make sure I get some exercise and try to eat somewhat healthily. I think it does more damage to go on a 'diet' rather than set out a healthy eating plan that you can't stick to in the long term. I'm overweight but I'm not as worried about it as I used to do.
