Rugby Semi-final V Giant Secondhand Book Sale

Having to make a decision between staying at home and watching the England/New Zealand Rugby World Cup Semi-Final and going to the Giant NSPCC second-hand book sale took me about 5 seconds! The book sale won..........of course.

For the umpteenth year I  travelled down the A12 to Holmwood prep-school on the outskirts of Colchester and joined the queue and came away later with these. A couple of children's books and a game of Chinese Chequers. (They had masses of jigsaws, loads of games and 100's of children's book so I think I was quite restrained)

Before I got into the room where they have all the above I'd already had fun looking through the 1000's of adult books in the prep-school gym.

I don't know why I picked up the top book as I knew I'd read it already but as it's fairly new and he has just published another book I thought it might be worth a bit  more to sell and it is. Seems I can't get the buying and selling of books out of my system! Thank goodness that very few of the books for sale cost more than £1 each and children's books are 50p or less.

Damian Le Bas is the author I went to listen to at the 2018 Felixstowe book festival. I borrowed the book from the library but didn't read it for some reason so now it's on the shelves for me to try again.
As for the Witches Spell-a-day book - just curious to see what it was. The crossword book isn't really what I thought so it will be passed on. All the rest are books I've not read and will enjoy before they go off for sale or charity shops.

So once again I've added to the shelves, although temporarily,  when I was supposed to be decreasing my book stock.

Wonder if there is any help for book-a-holics?

Hello, My name is Sue and I'm addicted to books!

  1. I would suggest we formed a self-help group, but I'm not ready to give up yet, Sue. You got a wonderful haul of books (I have noted some of them for future reference!) and games. Love the spooky header, especially the bats!

    1. They have so many books, games and puzzles it would be easy to spend a small fortune - actually some people do!

  2. Join the club, Sue. I just love the written word really. You found some great books there and as for Chinese Chequers, that took me right back to childhood and holidays at Nanna and Grampy's house.

    1. A book addicts club sounds goo!
I will have to teach someone how to play Chinese chequers, not something we had when the children were younger

  3. You missed a good match, Sue, it was really exciting. But I probably would have made the same decision in your shoes. Love your new header and seasonal mantelpiece.

  5. The love of books and the ability to read them are two of the most precious gifts we can pass on to our grandchildren. I may let Marie Kondo help me tidy my knicker drawer and decimate my lingerie, but NEVER my bookshelf!

  6. No, there is no hope for book-addicts ;) Looks like you got a great haul there.

  8. Aaw, Mog's Christmas'! I hope you are turning your grandchildren into bookaholics, too.
You are lucky to have a big book sale like that; they've all disappeared round here, like jumble sales.

    1. Mog will be one of the Advent Parcels for Florence as Eldest Daughter said Jacob had it already. It's a favourite from way back

    1. What I hadn't really noticed was that it was specific for 2012. Not sure if the spells will work any other year!

  11. Same here. My name is also Sue and I am addicted to buying books even though I have little time to actually read them! Having volunteered in a charity book shop for 17 years you might imagine how many books I have bought - very few ever leave my house! I thoroughly recommend the Shaun Bythell - he has a sequel out too.

  14. Sounds like you had a good weekend and the books look interesting. Saturday was a terrible day weather wise, we had our Autumn Fayre at the Garden Centre the big marquee and several small tents were torn and broken but at the end all thou it rained all day a record af money was taken (£1500 and still counting) all cakes were sold. It was in aid of Breast Cancer, we are a small village.

By the way - I mentioned 'another version' of your blog - found! This one (here) is on blogspot.com. It also appears on Bloglovin' - where I found my reply from a couple of days ago!

  16. Me too Sue. Got so many of them. Most of mine are history text books , so I feel I can't get rid of any in case I want to look something up.

  17. I have the book the Street Through Time. It was one of the few books I brought home from my classroom after retiring from teaching.

  18. What a wonderful day out. I'd suggest a self-help group too but as I really don't want to quit it would be a waste of time!
Enjoy all the books and I for one, am impressed by the restraint!

  20. Very nice book haul Sue, you find the best books.
I would like to try and get the Best of Times about growing up in the 50's, would you mind letting me know the author.
I am in the US so it might be a challenge, but would like to try.
Thank you so much, I look forward to your blog each day with my morning coffee.

  21. There is no help for the book-a-holic. I've looked everywhere for help. I'm at my local library every Saturday morning. They're thinking of getting me my own t-shirt. Its like when you walk into the local bar or pub and EVERYONE knows your name. I live for books.

  22. I also have that Complete Crossword Companion. I picked it up not long ago for a £1 on a MacMillan Nurses Book Pile in a shop. It is useful for a few things so I have kept it on the side along with my Thesaurus.

  23. A Street Through Time looks very interesting to me. I've always been interested in how one section of land can change over hundreds of years. I'm glad you enjoyed the sale and at least you have good options for re-selling books you don't choose to keep.

  24. The book sale would win hands down! Looks like some fun finds. Book sales are far too tempting. I am really avoiding going to the library so I can also avoid the book shop they have there. Sigh.

    God bless.

  26. If there is a cure for bookaholics, I need it, but I wouldn't take it! You've got several tempting titles there, but honestly I'd want to read Mog's Christmas adventure first.
