"Recommended For You"

Like so many other people I have an Amazon wish list. Mine is used to keep a note of books I'd like to own or to remind me  to order them from the library.
But a favourite page is the bit where it recommends other books that I might like. Sometimes they are definitely books I wouldn't like..................

Like this..............Do I need a book on darning? even if it is a cult book featuring visible darning?  No not really.

These are some recent ideas Amazon has suggested for me........This looks interesting. I reckon Sue in Wales needs this for one of her challenges!

This is a bit pricey at the moment, I'll suggest it to the library. It might just repeat stuff that I already have information on.

This book appeared as a recommendation with a different cover, I'm sure I've borrowed it from the library but it's not listed in books read and I certainly don't have it in my WWII Home Front collection. So perhaps wasn't much good and I didn't finish it.

This keeps popping up - but new cookery books are never on my wish list to buy. Another one to borrow from the library sometime

There are several British Library Crime Classics due out later this year, they appear on Amazon long before they are available from the library.

I think the middle one above is the one I've got on order from Waterstones for free with the voucher I got although I can't get back into their site to find out so when a book arrives it will be a surprise!

Another book to request from the library

This looks intriguing too, the library already have this so I'll make a note to reserve it when they start working again

There's always something to look forward to reading........ thanks to the recommendations.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. And if you click on the recommendations you then get even more recommendations based on them. Then it's down the rabbit hole time!! I do like it when you can read bits of the books and I confess I've bought a few books as a result!! It's a clever ploy :-)

  2. Hello Sue I've been following for a little while now & meant to say hi before this. I've been struck by the slightly random nature of Amazon recommendendations too: because you buy a book on needlepoint for a birthday prezzie, they think you might like Teach Yourself Mountaineering... ๐Ÿ˜ Like you, I list books to borrow when the library service catches up! I've just read, and enjoyed, Wintering. There's an article on the Rations Challenge book in the current Good Housekeeping mag (free online via the library ๐Ÿ˜).

    1. Hello Kate, good to hear from you.
Thank you for that info on the Good Housekeeping I'll check that out, the book doesn't have many good recommendations so I won't be buying it

  3. Some of them look really good but, like you, I'd give the darning a miss. I loved the Mrs Tim books that you recommended and am very sorry there aren't more of them.

  5. Nice lot to choose from there.
I agree with you that not all the books recommended are suitable.
It all depends on how a book is written for me, some Authors have the knack to pull you in straight away and others I struggle with.

    1. I keep hoping that the mobile library will somehow be able to bring the books they have ready for people to collect, even if we weren't allowed to go on to it

  6. I had "The Salt Path" on reserve from the library in February. Of course, I'm still waiting. But I posted in our church WhatsApp group on Tuesday evening, and yesterday someone cycled round and left their copy in my porch. Hoping it's as good as everyone says....

  7. I have a very long book wish list ;o) mostly non fiction though. I really must look into borrowing more from the library although I always rather own non fiction books so I can peruse and re-use at my leisure!
As one who does not like winter, I think I need to read the 'Wintering' book - thanks for the recommendation.

  8. I go through the books on my list from time to time, to check the price of second-hand ones. Usually very good quality, and I buy from small traders when I can. Really useful when you can't get out, and, like Ali, I like to read a little part of the book first.

  9. I've seen both Wintering and Simply Living Well mentioned in lots of places recently, they both look lovely, it would be great to borrow them from the library.

I still have one book from the library as it turned up just before lockdown. I started reading it (Sustainableish by Jen Gale) but I just can't care about it right now, maybe saving the world is just too much for me at the moment!

  11. Hi, I read daily but never post.

If unsure whether you've read a book, look at the kindle version and at the top of the picture of the book it says 'look inside'. This usually provides you with a chapter of a book to read to decide if you want to read further or jog your memory. Apologies if I am teaching 'granny to suck eggs'

  12. I do always check the Recommendations when I'm on Amazon accidentally ordering books. Sometimes though a strange woodworking or engineering book appears on my list and I know that Alan has been browsing instead of working again.

Oh I already have the Simply Living Well book and Wintering ... neither of them read yet though ... and I think I might have just accidentally ordered the Rations Challenge book ... as you say it was made for me!!

  17. Some of those look pretty decent. I used to get a lot of books on my recommended-to-you list that would interest me. However lately when I'm looking at print books it always recommends Kindle books to me which rarely relate to the one I'm looking at. Sigh. I think they are trying to encourage digital books in this time so they don't have to deliver (which I understand) but please let me look! I can 'window' shop on Amazon!

  18. I am often puzzled by some of the books that pop up on my "recommended for you" list from Amazon? Many of them seem to be out of left field!
In Canada I order from Amazon.ca - I can order through Amazon.com if I am sending something to the US - I can't get an order sent to me. However, I can order from Amazon UK and since you often get books ahead of us I do sometimes order from the UK.
I really want to order some books from Persephone books - visiting them is on my list when next I can travel to London.
