Halfway Through August

Suffolk was in the  HOT  part of the country all week until yesterday.  6 days over 30℃ is quite unusual for England and 6 nights of +20℃ is also unusual and not good for sleeping. Even the cat wandered about looking for somewhere cool. I was just glad I hadn't got to go to work!
My "triple aspect" living room means the sun shines in all day - which I love for the light but it does get rather warm.I don't like electric fans - my electric bill doesn't need to be bigger - so I just open the windows wide, draw the curtains over and keep as cool as possible and then lazed about watching the World Championship snooker - delayed from May and so much better without an audience coughing and fidgeting!

So what's been happening this week apart from snooker watching...................

I delivered my two pathetic Blueberry bushes to Sis-in- law and Brother-in-law with half a bag of Ericaceous compost in the hope they are better at looking after them than I am! SiL got one for BiL for his birthday last May so now they have 3 which should help with pollination. While there I picked up another bundle of the puzzle pages from the local  daily  paper. I've been trying to do the huge Sudoku which is 25 x 25 and uses numbers 1 - 9 as well as letters L - Z. There must be a trick to doing it somehow - but I've not found it yet.

Tried to start the ride-on mower during the week just to trim some of the grass round the back of the house, turned the key and got a horrible rattling noise - oh heck. It's gone away for repair again, second time this year something's gone wrong, this time probably the solenoid in the starter motor, just hope it's not too expensive. I want to use the mower and it's trailer to move the 20 slabs that are round what was the new raspberry bed, although it would have been to hot for that job this week anyway.

On Tuesday I used my boot-sale bargain cheese making kit to make my first batch - more about that next week as it deserves a post all to itself.

Visited Youngest Daughter and Oldest Granddaughter and took the PPE that I collected in Stowmarket last week for the opticians where she works.
Then had a visit from DiL with Youngest Granddaughter and Youngest Grandson. The little fella is 6 months old and so much happier now. He can sit up with a little support, is enjoying his first tastes of squishy solids and loving water in a sippy cup which is very handy with this hot weather. I fetched down the photo album with Son at the same age - completely the same- little round face and blond hair and same smile too.

Here's Son with his big sister and Colin in 1982 when Eldest Daughter was nearly 2 and Son about 6 months. None of the children or grandchildren have inherited Col's mad thick curly hair!

Youngest Grandson below has the same look of astonishment when having his photo taken although less hair than his daddy had at the same age!

Listening to odd bits of radio and TV news this week I feel so sorry for all people whinging about having to decide between going abroad for a holiday and maybe having to isolate themselves when they come back - what a shame! Pity they don't remember the part of the population who can't afford a holiday anywhere because they've lost their jobs and another bit of the population surviving on the minimum wage and having no hope of a holiday.

This week I'm Grateful for
  • Always plenty of things to do at home
  • Having 3 out of 4 grandchildren in Suffolk to see them grow all the time
  • Not worrying about "conspiracy theories",
  • An ability to think for myself and plough my own furrow!

Hope everyone has a good weekend - the forecast for Sunday looks a bit iffy for a car-boot sale  visit, hope it's wrong. Despite the yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms there's still only been a couple of light showers here.

Back Monday

  1. They really are very alike? How nice to see Col as a young man - He was quite a looker, wasn't he? :-)
And I totally agree with you about the holiday people. They MUST have known there was a chance this would happen and they took the risk anyway. A shame it backfired but that's our world at the moment. At least they could still go . . .

    2. I did put 'is' and then felt that was not appropriate. Great bone structure, a super smile and I love curly hair.

  2. Your late husband could be the brother of my ex! Look forward to hearing how the cheese making went; it's a wonder the milk didn't go off in that heat.

    1. The milk wasn't part of the kit - I bought it from the supermarket!

  3. We like your 3rd and 4th things to be grateful for. The 4th can be both a blessing and a curse, but on balance more blessing we believe. Enjoy your variety of weather.

  7. Raining hard here in Somerset! Lovely photos and what a likeness. Yes I too feel so sorry (not) for all those moaning about returning from abroad. If they go they take the risk. My exception would be those visiting close relatives but of course the same rules must apply.

    1. I wish people would take responsibility for their own actions and stop blaming others for their choices

  8. Colin was a good looking fella. Who did he inherit his hair from? Both my husband and I had hair like Colin's, my husband inherited his from his maternal grandfather and I from my paternal grandmother. Sadly for both of us our hair is now thinner so the curls are gone, although with lockdown (no barber visits) his curls did come back. The hair gene has ended with the two of us as neither our daughter nor our two grand-daughters have inherited it.

We had some distant rumbling of thunder and rain, but not the storms or lashings of rain that was forecast. I welcome the sun, but not the intensity of the heat or humidity and the blinding light. I may as well become Rip Van Winkle and sleep my way through it rather than try to get snything (craft) done. Still, I now have a few days to get myself back on track, so to speak.

    Apologies for the long comment.

    1. Colin's Dad had the same tight curled thick hair - it went a bit thinner when he got into his 70's. Col's brother doesn't have the same hair but his sister's is similar. Our youngest daughters hair came back curly after she had chemotherapy when she was 18 but not quite such tight frizz curls.I hoped one of the grandchildren would have my black hair but no luck.

  11. What a lovely baby, looks just like his daddy.
'fraid to say I agree with you about the holiday whining. They chose to go, no one forced them. Everyday we read more and more people are losing their jobs, my sympathies lie with those folk. A foreign holiday now seems to be an 'essential' for some people, not a luxury. I could go on but I won't, hope you get some more car boot bargains, I love seeing what you buy🙂

    1. So many people have lost their jobs and I fear it will get worse before it gets better. People who have a choice should take responsibility for themselves

  12. My poor mum was complaining how hot it was. I felt really bad for her. It's hot here but we have window air conditioners so at least there is that. I don't like how high the electric bill is though and am looking forward to the cooler days - and nights!

On the hurrying to get back from holiday thing - I'm not sure I'd go anywhere though I suppose if they paid for it before this all began they probably wouldn't have been able to get back money unless it was cancelled. I was supposed to visit Mum for six weeks in July, it got postponed until August and has now been cancelled. I must admit I'm upset. Mum turns 84 next month and I'm not sure when I will see her again. I feel bad being so far away and not being able to help - though I am lucky my sister lives close to her and has been helping out. I booked the trip in February (as I usually do) but the airline cancelled so I got refunded my money.

Sorry enough whinging lol. I am just hoping we can all get through this and be back with loved ones soon.

    1. Probably even hotter in Ipswich for your Mum than for me out in the country.
It's all back to normal now, 22C and damp in the air and plenty of cloud.
I hope you will get over here before to long to see her - it must be worrying being so far away but Suffolk is one of the safest bits of the country.

  13. I love the picture of Colin and the children and yes, your youngest grandson sure does look like your son! I do understand your feelings about those unhappy with not being able to travel abroad. We have rarely been able to travel on holidays due to the expense of traveling. I love your list of what you are grateful for - especially the last one!

  14. I can't ever remember moaning about not having a holiday when I was young. A lot of kids never had holidays in the fifties. We couldn't afford it. A day out on a bus was all we got.

  15. I had to look up snooker. I could watch that! Especially with no audience hanging on.

  16. That photo of Colin and the children is lovely, and yes the similarity between your son and grandson is completely there.

I'm getting fed up of the 'news' being full of people talking about the inconvenience of having to self isolate after a foreign holiday. If they were so quick to go abroad and were able to afford it, it is simply the price they must pay. The sensible ones are staying much closer to home.

As to all the 'conspiracy' theorists ... they have just been watching too much news from the USA where things are proven to be totally out of hand. Luckily in this country the majority are able to think for themselves and not try to influence other people.

So I love your 3rd and 4th, although you may plough your own furrow ... you canna cut your own grass, for the moment ;-)
