Library Book Photo.......at Last

It has been a long wait but these were my reservations collected from the library van last week

Three crime fiction and three non-fiction.
Candace Robb hadn't written a book in her Owen Archer historical crime series since 2008 so I'd given up looking on Fantastic Fiction for new books, then suddenly she's produced two more. Mine is the first from 2019 and I have the 2020 one on order too. The other two crime are both the latest in their series. Feed your family for £20 a week might have a few ideas - if they can be altered for feeding one person-  I'll flip through it. The Last Landlady is the authors story of her Grandmother who was the first woman to hold a pub license in her own right. Not sure what The Lifegiving Home is or where I heard about it but a quick look tells me I won't be reading it.

Andrew the library man said during the first weeks of lock-down he rang everyone on his membership list - all  the people who use the van - about 650 he thought and only one person had had any virus symptoms. The majority of people who use the library van are elderly  - I'm young compared to most! so there really weren't many people in Suffolk with covid - I've still not come across anyone who's had it. The window cleaner who's been out and about all through the last 5 months said he only knew of one person who'd died from it- and that was an elderly neighbour who'd gone into a care home and had lots of other background problems. He'd heard of a few people who'd had possible symptoms early on but nothing for weeks.
Still a safe place to live I think.

Library man Andrew is even more worried about keeping his job- he said almost everyone was returning their books but not wanting to browse the shelves or take any home except what they'd ordered - even with the safety measures put in place. This could be a good excuse for saying the mobile library isn't needed, as they were already talking about reducing it to just a small van with a limited choice.  As I normally order all my books and just collect from the van it would be easy for me to collect them from a branch, although I would need to go more often than once in 4 weeks as they don't keep requests on the reservation shelf for very long and I'd need to keep an eye on the due dates to avoid fines, something I don't need to think about at the moment.

Apologies for lack of comments on all the blogs I read. I've been turning the lap top off early and many people post in the evening so I don't get to read until next day when it always seems a bit late to leave a comment. For the same reason more apologies are needed for not getting round to replying to comments on here. ........hopeless!

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I'm so glad you have your library books again and I very much hope they don't use it as an excuse to discontinue the service. That would be such a loss.

    1. The mobile library is used so much less than when I worked on it in the late 70's. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they gave up on it

  2. I don't know why we haven't had more cases here in Suffolk but there hasn't been a single case of it in Heath Road Hospital for weeks.

    1. That's good news about Heath Road.
Because they kept lumping Heath Road in with Colchester when giving numbers on Look East it didn't give a fair representation for Suffolk I thought.

  3. Oh gosh, I hope they don't pull the plug on the mobile library service. Round here they had our van park up by Nantgaredig school, for several hours, so people could come down there from surrounding areas and would "be able to charge their mobile phones"! For heaven's sake, we DO have electricity in our homes these days - the Council are a waste of rations!

Just been looking at Suffolk figures but they are divided up into S, E & W Suffolk. Don't know what the rate per 100,000 is. Here in Carms we've had 809 cases - 45.3 per 100,000. As we have Llanelli on the outskirts of Swansea, there were a lot more there than in Carmarthen and environs.

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if the mobile libraries are stopped sometime soon.
Somewhere online are the rates per 100,000 for each District Council area. Mid Suffolk was <5.Not sure where I found it now

  4. I do hope you don't lose your library maybe a few more people would use it if they thought it might close especially when the winter some. I know ours closed just after I moved here we do have a big library in the town.
Thank you so much Sue for commenting on when you do make a comment there is some people who never comment and I wonder if they read the comments people make.
It looks as thou it's going to be a nice day so I want to do some weeding. Enjoy your day.

  5. We got off relatively lightly in Pembrokeshire so far with 299 cases, but lockdown eased here 2 weeks ago and ever since we've had an influx of tourists and our numbers started to rise again last week. Coincidence? I am told {I don't go} that our village square is heaving with visitors, unmasked and not observing social distancing. The queues outside cafés for take out are long and stretch down the pavements with no social distancing. Lockdown has further easing today so time will tell.

    1. Some people just don't seem worried at all - the ignorance of youth I think! and other people seem to be over cautious. I'm trying to do the middle ground

  6. In Hampshire there are 8 libraries the council can't afford, they hope the locals will take them over or they will close, luckily our library is not on the list.

    1. All libraries in Suffolk are already run by a Community Interest group with lots of volunteers running them. The mobiles cost a lot for the amount of people that use them now - so it could well be the end of them before very long

  7. I'm glad your covid numbers are so low, and really hope that they stay like that :)

  8. We have low BAME population so that has a lot to do with it, different population demographic to Leicester, Manchester, NW and Tower Hamlets and lots of hunky fit people and herd immunity growing. Enjoy your day and the library books look like you will have some good reads.

  9. Libraries are one of the services we think will go on for ever, ingrained into our lives which sadly is not the case.

I don't look at numbers or statistics for anything as they don't mean anything to me, so I leave it all for my husband who understands and thrives on numbers etc. He loves to keep me updated on covid-19 even though it goes over my head.

I have stopped leaving comments on blogs who don't leave some kind of response. I like 'conversation' to be two ways, however brief.

    2. Of course I understand that as life should be a priority and always come first. No, I'm talking about those who NEVER reply to a comment.

  10. Yay ... library books, although I doubt you would have run out of your own reading matter anytime soon. But it's nice to have some fresh supplies I bet.

It is time consuming leaving and answering comments sometimes, but it builds a nice blogland community.

  11. I hardly dare read the titles of your latest batch of books - I so often end up 'having to buy' one or more. Like the one that is due to be delivered today "I am an Island" by Tamsin Calidas. Our visiting library van hasn't returned since Lockdown began - but then it only stayed for 20 minutes, outside the village pub, once a month.
I'm guessing that maybe people are afraid to touch all those books that have been handled by so many, in fear of picking up the Covid infection. It would be a real shame to lose this service though; it's a lifeline for so many people and often the chance to talk to someone, anyone!

    1. The mobiles are used so little now compared to 40 years ago. More people are out at work I guess and now libraries in Suffolk are open on Sundays as well as week days I suppose it's easier for people to go to a library building

  12. I love my library and was so happy when they reopened! We can still only do pickup so I go online and place my holds - then I'll get a notice to book my pickup time. I usually book a couple of weeks ahead as any other holds that arrive automatically get added to that pickup time. Just got 7 new books last Thursday and I've read 3 already. I'm taking a break to read the one book I bought last week - Alexander McCall Smith's "The Geometry of Holding Hands" - the latest Isobel Dalhousie novel. I'm so glad that I've got my reading mojo back!

    Enjoy your reading.

  13. Good that the mobile library is back in action as they are such a boon to many people. Our libraries are open for pre-ordered collections only and a box outside for returns. I'm still reading library e-books at the moment and one or two I bought for my Kindle, I do like to hold a proper book though. I hope you enjoy reading your selection, they look interesting:)

    1. The libraries in buildings aren't open properly here yet either.People have to request a selection of a certain type and then book a time to collect what someone else has chosen for them - an odd idea

    2. I went to the library just before lockdown, & got various books I thought we might want to read. So as soon as Suffolk Libraries were open again, I took them back & Elder Son & I had a (socially distanced!) chat with the librarian. & I haven't been back since, because I don't want a load of books someone eke has chosen for me! I am using Libby to read ebooks & listen to audio books - no risk of fines as the books just vanish from my phone if I don't renew them!

  14. Wish we had a library van, it would make life easier.
My niece lives with us and she tested positive. She had a sore throat and was so tired. She quarantined herself in her room and we gave her the back bathroom to use. We all tested negative even though we had interacted with her every day. LA County, where we live, has over 192,000 cases and more than 4700 dead. That's just one county in CA.
    Stay safe and healthy.

  15. Our library still is not open and I am really missing it. Thank heavens I had bought a number of books before the pandemic hit, and have lots that I can re read.

    God bless.
