A Warm Bank Holiday Weekend - Can This Be True?

It certainly is forecast and the weather yesterday was several degrees warmer than the rest of the month, but before that I'm sure it rained at sometime almost everyday during the last week. It felt like it.

In a couple of dry bits I managed to strim round the edges of the back and front lawns and hoe out a few weeds and then cut the front and back lawns. I also had a close look at the one tree tucked in the corner that appeared to be a fruit tree and some fruit has set so I cut off a couple of bits of the Ceonothus and the tree to the right to give the fruit a bit more light. I'm still not entirely sure what it is - hope it's not just  a crab apple - that would be annoying -  prefer things more edible!
The garden gave a surprise when  I discovered a Hosta tucked away behind the huge Peony. I love Hostas, so what a shame it's so hidden. I've always grown them in pots to help avoid slugs and to see them better, but this is a bit big to move although it's pointless leaving it where it is.

Last Sunday someone tried to phone me on the home phone and then got me on the mobile to tell me the home phone was dead.
After calling BT I found they'd cut me off for non payment of 2 bills! Puzzling since I'd only been here 2 weeks! Actually someone (me) had forgotten to check that the Direct Debit had been set up again - Whoops! And someone (them) hadn't properly changed the date of my move and cancelled the April bill when I was living in the holiday lets. One of the problems with not moving directly from one home to another.....it certainly complicated several things.

After 5 years of rootling around in small under the work-top fridges, I've at last got back to a tall 50/50 fridge over freezer and also my first ever dishwasher (and I'm 66 years old!) is now installed - although I haven't used it yet - I'm waiting for Eldest Daughter to visit and show me how it works! One of my difficulties in life is learning how to use new machines.
Luckily I didn't need to read the instructions for the fridge/freezer😃

Also this week I've looked after the two youngest grandchildren for an hour while DiL went for her first vaccination. Hope she doesn't have side effects as they are off down south to visit her Dad and have a camping holiday.

On Friday morning I had to shop ready for the Surrey family's visit and met Rachel-in-Norfolk for a coffee in Morrison's cafe. I nearly double booked myself as I also had an invite for a meet up from Ang but that was in the wrong direction so not really on and as I'd got the Fridays wrong in my head anyway and had already arranged the coffee but not jotted the coffee meet up down  it was a good thing I didn't.
Quickly home and unpack shopping then it was a 2 minute walk past 4 houses in the road for a hair cut as my usual hairdressers, which used to be an 8 mile round trip by car.

This week I have been grateful for
  • Finding out that I'd not imagined May as a wet, cold month as there's been only 1 day over 20℃ so far whereas last year there were 21 days over 20℃
  • Hearing a hopeful weather forecast at last
  • Getting the big curtain pole up and fixed almost by myself.
  • Good books to read

Hope you all have a really good weekend and the weather is perfect for whatever you are doing.
I'm going to enjoy time with my Eldest Daughter and Eldest Grandson and will be back one day next week.

  2. I love hostas too, but sadly, so the snails in my garden. Dishwashers are very easy to use. Mine has a quick wash programme, which is the only one I use as there's only 2 of us and we don't have heavily soiled pots. I leave it on that programme, just pop a tablet in the little box thingy inside (I use the 3 in 1 type, so don't need to bother with separate salt etc) shut the door and switch it on. I'm sure if you google the make and model, you'll find the instructions online. Enjoy the time with your daughter and grandson, precious time, especially after this past 18 months! xx

    1. The A140 was really busy on the way home yesterday - loads of caravans. Glad I'm not going anywhere.

  4. Sounds like you are quickly getting to work on the garden! Good to take advantage of the nice weather when you can. Glad you are getting to spend time with family and friends again.

  5. Enjoy your dishwasher, Sue. After saving money because of the 1st lockdown, I treated myself to my first ever dishwasher - I hate, hate, hate washing up! - and I'm 76. I love it. How have I lived all my life without one?

  6. That's a beautiful Hosta. I'm glad the weather finally let you work outside a bit. It is wonderful that you and Rachel are able to meet up once in awhile! Congratulations on the new fridge and dishwasher, I'm sure you will love both. I didn't get a dishwasher until I was older and now I won't live without one. It will be especially nice when the family visits but also handy for you as well. They say a dishwasher actually uses less water than washing by hand plus it disinfects your dishes if anyone is sick. Enjoy your family this weekend!

  7. You seem to be settling in well despite occasional hiccups. Hosta is lovely and deserves a place of its own - maybe next Spring it could be transplanted?

  8. Beautiful hostas! I wish I could send you some of our heat and dryness. We've barely gotten a drop of rain this whole month and the last week or so have been middle-of-July hot.

  9. You will love the dishwasher and only having to do dishes every second or third day. I finally got one again after years of not having one and am so pleased to be able to save on water usage once again.

    God bless.

  10. I love hostas too. No problem with slugs but the deer destroyed my entire hosta shade garden. My favorite hosta was "Montana." Today, I only grow plants the deer do not eat. New home plus new appliances sounds perfect. Enjoy your time with family.

  11. I am a dishwasher convert of two years. For me the pile of used crocks and things waiting to be washed up is eliminated.

  12. I've had a dishwasher for years because I had hearty-eating men. Now I can use it once a day or eo day.
Hostas, I love them. See my blog, http://prairie-quilts-and-kolaches.blogspot.com/ later this weekend for photos of my new ones.
Weekend: It's Memorial Day weekend here in the States. We spent ALL of yesterday (Saturday) putting in new flower beds/landscaping around the front of the house. We are both terribly sore & tired today; but it looks wonderful and I'm so happy. There will be photos of that also. I took some last evening but it was getting pretty dark so not sure if they will show up very well. And today is cloudy and rainy. I'm really due for a photo-log of the entire yard.

  13. I am glad you are able to get a new refrigerator and dishwasher. We use the dishwasher more now that our adult daughter is living with us again. It used to be every other day when we'd use it when there were just 2 of us. I was going to get a hosta but it's not good without shade. Since we lost our tree I won't get one this year. Maybe next year when the Shogestu flowering cherry tree gets bigger. Phil put up a blind in Megan's office as old one was broken. She's the one who found the company that makes them per size we need, per measurement. I need to make or buy new curtains as older one needs replaced. I made it when our son had that room for his bedroom. It has airplanes on it. Take care!

  14. I love Hostas too, although I have to admit to not liking their flowers very much. And I'm so pleased that I'm not the only one who finds new appliances hard to fathom out.

I can't wait to have a bigger fridge freezer again ... my Smeg will be here on the 21st and I'm counting the days!!
