Just Two More No-Meat Products

 I'm  enjoying trying all these new-to-me vegetarian things, well, I say "enjoying" but that's not been true with all of them. Here are the previous taste testings.

 This one below comes from Aldi.

This is the description Wholemeal seeded pastry case filled with chedder cheese, feta cheese and spinach in a savoury custard with cream and free range egg.Topped with feta cheese,red peppers and pine nuts.
Several of the things tried previously have been tasteless but this was the opposite, it had a bit too many flavours. As well as all the above there was garlic and thyme in there too. So many different things that it was difficult to work out if it was good on not. And it was Very Big for one person but not really big enough and much too squishy for cutting in half.
Wouldn't bother buying this again, it's just a glorified quiche! So I could make it myself but with fewer ingredients and with the new chest freezer now holding a store of home-made pastry cases, I can  whip up a quiche to last me several days in no time at all. 
 
And finally Linda McCartney Burgers. I never eat meat burgers anywhere but tried these a few weeks ago and they were surprisingly good. I'll be buying them again.

 
I reckon that's enough of trying things unless I come across something completely different somewhere.

  1. We've had those LM burgers a few times, I like them the best out of all the veggie burgers we've tried. Still prefer a real meat burger though.

  2. I couldn't get on with those LM burgers, too much texture! AS a veggie the one thing I find difficult is that so many products targetting us lot have a very meaty texture!

    1. I am with you Betty and disappointed that so many veggie meals resemble meat when the very reason for being a vegetarian is you don't like meat - the taste or texture. I rarely buy any of these ready meals and skip past the fridges prefering to make our own meals. Too much soya protein these days from these veggie substitutes is also thought to be the reason for increased thyroid problems so cutting down on meat and eating these veggie ready meals might cause other health problems.

  4. At least now you know rather than just looking and wondering. A shame about the pie - Higgidy Pies are so delicious but, I expect, a lot more expensive than supermarket own brands

  5. Meatless Farm is pretty good too. I often wonder who decides how much seasoning goes in, especially when it comes to garlic and coriander.

  6. If I was a vegetarian I would prepare my own meals from scratch. In the 1970s it was quite the thing to eat brown rice and have "cleansing" diets. We used to eat stuffed peppers, quite unusual in those days, vegetable curries, very popular, fried cabbage and pickles and different bean salads where we soaked beans overnight and then boiled them. There were no ready meals then for either vegetarians or non-vegetarians. I enjoyed all the meals we had. I think when my vegan friend came to stay in the summer the point at which I went wrong in preparing her food was because I had become influenced by all the fancy fake meat meals, and ready meals etc that I had seen in the supermarkets and thought I had to do something way beyond my capabilities. If I had stuck to my 1970s memories of lentils, stuffed peppers and brown rice I would not have got in such a muddle. Oh well, a bit late now!

    1. My homemade curries are always vegetarian. I can make a big pan full now I've got somewhere to store the portions.
      Sadly I can't eat lentils or pulses - they are staples of a proper vegetarian or vegan diet

  7. I am not totally vegetarian and will always opt for the vegetarian meal, but not burgers or pies whatever the filling.

    2. True. I eat fish, eggs and milk products, but not meat. It is a compromise that spouse and I worked out, before we married. And neither of us eat products from a fast food outlet.

  8. I used to like the LM burgers but not any more and obviously not any of the vegetarian ones which are always loaded with cheese and milk products. The pies really do sound like ingredient and flavour overload. It's like they chucked everything they could at it, and unfortunately failed.

    If I'm eating a burger it's usually a vegetable based one, either in or out of breadcrumbs and most pies are eat now are home-made as I like simple flavours (potato and onion for tea tonight for instance).

    It really is worth trying out all these things though as sometimes a little gem will be discovered, I've been enjoying your reviews.

    Bake microwave or toaster oven
    Quick yummy delicious
    Have been vegetarian since 1992.
    Almost vegan exc for occ cheese on pizza
    I do use vegan cheese when make at home

I enjoy the convenience of having a few pies or other simple ready meals in the freezer, to serve alongside fresh veg.After all those years living in Leicestershire, Pukka Steak Pies are high on my list of [non veg, obviously] such standbys. But like many, I am reducing my meat consumption . I am SO grateful to you for testing out these different products. Esp as Aldi, Lidl,Co-op, Tesco and Morrisons are all within cycling distance.

  11. Next you should try raw vegan... that's a real challenge but a fun one, for sure. Those Linda McCartney "burgers" look wonderful as does the spinach pie. I always feel sorry for Paul McCartney as I think him & Linda were a one-of-a-kind couple and he has really missed her since she died. ~Andrea xoxoxo

  13. Thank you for all the taste testing, I don't usually eat meat substitute but occasionally when it's very cold I really fancy Chilli con carne or Lasagne, so I buy the fake mince and with my lovely recipes from when the kids were little I can enjoy old favourites.

  14. I went grocery shopping today and the cafe had a special on cheese burgers. I had not had a burger in years and burgers cooking on the grill smelled very good. I could not resist. The burger was delicious. The LM burger sounds good. I'll look for it and give it a try.

    I use spices
    Beets
    Brown rice
    Black beans
    Carrots
    Fire roasted tomatoes
    Little flour to hold together if needed
    Yummmm

  16. I dashed into Sainsburys for a couple of things yesterday and they had those burgers on offer for £1 so I bought a packet for K and S to try.
