The Saturday car-boot sale was a total fail on useful finds and all I came home with was a bunch of beetroot. The Sunday boot sale seemed to be much the same after walking round almost the whole area and only finding a Ladybird book of Dinosaurs and a good sized Hosta (there was only one here, tucked right at the back of the border and a target for slugs - I always keep them in pots)
But then I spotted a water-butt on a stand and snapped that up for £12 (that's about a third of the price of one new) which means all that's needed now for my rain-water catching set-up is a filter kit for the other house down-pipe.
After struggling back to the car with it I continued my look round and came across all 12 of the Diary of an Edwardian Lady Month Plates. I'd got April and October from a charity shop and a boot sale last year but of course the lady needed to sell the whole set at once and I dithered as she said she wanted £25 for them.
This is me dithering...............π΅ !
Did I need them?........No.
Did I want more things to dust?...........No
Was it a waste of money?............possibly.
Would they look good for my seasonal display shelf? ...............Definitely Yes
What would my chances be of finding any of the others at a charity shop? .......Quite Low
Had I got somewhere to store them? .......Yes
Could I get rid of 12 items to charity shops to make up for buying them?....... Yes
After several minutes dithering the lady said the least she would sell them for was £20 and after at first walking away I decided to go back for them because if ever I did find any of the other 10 individually they would probably cost £2 each at least. Having them on the bookshelves one at a time won't add anything to the dusting and I'll have forgotten what they look like by the next time they are out on display!
So here they are
and now stored away in the cupboard in the living room where they will be easy to get at each month and a big bag of random plates, crockery etc is now in the car waiting to go to a charity shop.
Then I came home quickly before I could spend any more money!
Back Tomorrow
Sue
That was a great find and you stuck to 'one in, one out' so for the pleasure they will give you, you have done a fine thing.
ReplyDeleteYes they will give me pleasure each month as I get each one out of the cupboard
DeleteYou will enjoy those plates far longer than you will remember what you paid for them. I always enjoy your seasonal displays, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI shall enjoy them each month on the shelf
DeleteThe plates are beautiful and so detailed. I would have done the same! Do you have a copy of the book too?
ReplyDeleteWith love from,
Kelly (Mrs. Kiwi)
Yes - I often use her pages when I do the First of the Month Country sayings posts
DeleteI am so pleased you brought the plates they are lovely. It will soon be the May plate.
ReplyDeleteThe months will rush by even quicker as I get each plate out
DeleteThe plates were a great buy, well worth the dithering. And you can never have enough water buttsπ
ReplyDeleteThe water butt was a good find as I just needed one more
DeleteI have been having some trouble with comments, in fact your one today on mine was put in the Spam folder!! Why I am anonymous here I do not know. Sorry about that.
DeleteOne day you will reach the point of not buying but so far you have not reached that point. It will come.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, you are cheerful this morning!
DeleteWith 5 grandchildren and an eye for things that will save money later there will always be something
I was thinking about the plates and your questions to yourself.
ReplyDeleteOh, my dithering! I see. I expect you are right - will wait
DeleteWell, that was £20 well spent tbh. Think of the pleasure they will give you down the years. The water butt was a brilliant buy too. Great value and exactly what you needed.
ReplyDeleteVery pleased with the water butt and stand saved me several £s. Now nearly ready for water meter
DeleteI would have been unable to resist the plates as well, they are beautiful. The £20 you spent on them will give you more pleasure than it would have done sitting in the bank x
ReplyDeleteIt will be fun putting one out each month
DeleteThey sound good value to me and you will enjoy seeing them every month. While being careful with money is a great thing (and not something i am terribly good at yet), sometimes we need those little treats which make life that little bit brighter.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Ellie
I'm sure the plates will brighten my months ahead
DeleteOne needed, (on your list), ten wanted, (not on your list). As long as they give you pleasure, why not?
ReplyDeleteExactly
DeleteGood spotting! They're something that "give you joy", so you did the right thing in buying them! I look forward to seeing them each month.
ReplyDeleteThey will definitely feature in blog posts
DeleteOh, they are lovely. I couldn't have said no either, I'd love a set of plates like that to change monthly . . .
ReplyDeleteNo wonder you bought them. They will give you much joy each month. What a find!
xx
It was a surprise to see them at the car boot. I thought it would be very unlikely to find any after the two last year
DeleteThe plates are just beautiful, I think I would have dithered at the price but then I'm a cheap skate, or I was when we could do boots. I think you made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteWould like a close up of some of them.

I normally hate spending such a chunk of money but they will cheer up the shelf each month for years
DeleteBeautiful plates, excellent price, but I'd never find room for a set that big. For some reason we have very few cupboards in this house, so everything is 'out' all the time. I manage to put Christmas decs away in hampers each year, but anything else we buy has to be found room on shelves/bookcases (of which there are dozens, which is probably why we don't have room for cupboards!).
ReplyDeleteI have a glass fronted cupboard in the dining room half of the living room and by sorting out some things for charity shop I managed to fit them in. Just 3 book cases here now
DeleteThe plates are a real bargain - relatively inexpensive and something that will add joy to your life! Really pleased for you.
ReplyDelete£2 each sounds so much better than £20!
DeleteThose plates are beautiful Sue.
ReplyDeleteThey are very pretty. May one will be out on display soon.
DeleteWhat a great find. I liked reading your thoughts as you decided whether to buy or not!. Twenty pounds for the set sounded like a real bargain. I think you would have regretted not buying them later. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy dithering didn't take too long but long enough for the lady to drop the price!
DeleteI think they are lovely . And you are right if it boils down to 2 a piece such a deal.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Sounds better at £2 each!
DeleteIf it is any comfort to you, I saw a set of plates at a thrift store, not so detailed as yours but quite beautiful. I was struck by them, and coveted them, but I dithered. Just like you. I dithered. I walked away and then the next day, I went back with my mind made up to get them. They were gone. A non-ditherer has a beautiful set of plates. I have only a memory. I'm glad you got them and cannot wait to see a close up of them individually every new month.
ReplyDeleteI just checked on eBay and one plate is over $20.00 USD so you did very well, indeed. Enjoy and treasure them.
ReplyDeleteThey are certainly expensive for you over there. Not so much here I expect although I've not looked
DeleteI think you made the right decision as they are really terrific! You will enjoy them all year and so will we when you post them each month!
ReplyDeleteMy first of the month posts for the next year all sorted!
DeleteThey're lovely, and I think they were a bargain, as you say, you'd end up paying more if you bought them individually.
ReplyDeleteThey will look good on the shelf each month
DeleteI love your plates. How nice that you have a complete set! The water butt is a fantastic find as well. On Saturday I saw Chintz plates and did not buy. I can't stop thinking about the plates. Your purchase has motivated me to go back to the shop and buy "my" plates.
ReplyDeleteHope your plates are still there. I don't usually spend so much but they are very pretty
DeleteI love your new plates, Sue! They're beautiful! I'm glad you found them. I, on the other hand, am soooo over "stuff" that I don't want another material item to enter under my roof. What caused this change-of-heart in me is nothing short of miraculous and I'm grateful it happened....because downsizing is definitely in my near future & everything I had simply would not have fit in anyplace smaller. Hopefully by the time I'm done clearing out, only the basic for life will remain. We'll see. ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI've downsized a lot by moving here and now it's a one-in-one-out policy!
DeleteThat sounds like a good bargain and they are beautiful plates.
ReplyDeleteThey will look good on my shelf each month
DeleteThose plates are so beautiful, Sue! Well worth what you paid for them. What a nice treat! --Elise
ReplyDeleteIt's not easy for me to spend so much but they will be cheerful each month as I get each one out to display
DeleteThe plates are lovely and you made a wise decision! You got a good price, you love them and they make you happy, and you will use them regularly. I think you would have regretted it if you had not bought them. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI think her illustrations are so beautiful and hopefully they will give you much pleasure. Arilx
ReplyDeleteThose plates are absolutely gorgeous and a bargain price too. They would have been very expensive to buy originally I bet. You'll get so much pleasure from them for years to come.
ReplyDeleteSue, those are beautiful! To have the whole set is well worth every bit of the cost. I think I’m going to see if I can find them here in the USA, I love them!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a deal you found, I can only find them here for $45 each!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just have to do something that's good for your soul
ReplyDeleteI saw a beautiful set of plates at a thrift store, and like you, I dithered. I went home and after a night of coveting, I went back to buy them. They were gone. Someone who was not a ditherer got them. I am glad your dither was shorter.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful plates. Well dithered.
ReplyDeleteOh wow what a great find! I would have been (silently) over-the-moon. They are great plates.
ReplyDeleteI would have bought those, too. They're fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant purchase, those plates will look brilliant as they appear on the shelf each month, and barely have time to get dusty before being washed and put away for next year. AND of course if you do ever get fed up of them having the full set will make them so much easier to sell :-)
