April Country Ways and Country Days

This bit below was written in my April 1st post of  2019

There are often a few warm days at the end of March or beginning of April which brings the Blackthorn into flower then the weather will often turn colder which is called The Blackthorn Winter. According to forecasts that looks very likely for this year. We had Friday and Saturday with temperatures up to 17℃ and this week coming will be much colder with frosts at night.

So three years later it's much the same.................a week of warmer weather until the 29th March  and then much colder with frosts at night and even sleet and snow forecast for parts of the country.

The saying that March borrows days from April usually means that weather-wise the last few days of March and the first days of April are often the same.

March borrows of April
Three days and they are ill;
April borrows of March again
Three days of wind and rain.

My Illustration for April is again from the book 'A Sparrow's Life as Sweet as Ours' by Carrie Akroyd.

The male blackbird is one of our most recognisable birds, there was a decline in numbers through the latter part of the C20 but since the beginning of this century numbers have increased again.

In Shakespeare's Midsummer Nights Dream, Bottom says
The Ousel-cock, so black of hue, with orange tawny beak.

because until the C17 blackbirds were just one of the birds of the ousel family, they didn't have their own name.

Most of the old weather sayings seem to prefer a wet April

A dry April
Not the farmer's will
April wet
is what we should get

April wet, good wheat

April has thirty days, and if it rained on thirty-one,
no harm would be done.

I'm just hoping for a dry Easter for the family visit and Easter Egg hunt around the garden.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. Sorry, I'm hoping for a wet Easter because we rely on rain water and our tanks are nearly dry!
Oh, all right then, I will give you a couple of dry days for family and egg hunt, if you give me acouple of wet ones either side.

    1. It does sound like you really need rain - there's usually plenty to give away here

  2. Nothing in my opinion can beat the song of the blackbird. If Nature could possibly arrange for sunny days and wet nights I'd be more than happy. x

  3. "April showers bring May flowers". That's another old country saying.

  4. Blackthorn is flowering in one of my hedges, so we're having a proper Blackthorn Winter. Very cold here in Dorset but no snow.

  5. Plenty of time 'til Easter for it to turn to a heatwave.

  6. It sounds as though your weather is exactly the same as ours. Although we are leaning more in the cold side than the warmer. Unfortunately we don't have the grands this Easter so no egg hunt here -- but I hope it's a gorgeous day around the world.

    1. A little snow here today - snow in April is not unknown but very unwelcome!

  7. March-April rains are good for Spring growth. It's raining this morning and the lawns are looking green. All the iris are poking through the ground. Spring flowering trees are full of buds and with some warmth the flowering will be beautiful. That said, a freeze could destroy the buds and there will be no Spring flowering trees for 2022.

    1. Luckily my new fruit trees haven't come into flower yet so this cold spell has done no harm but the wind has blown all the flowering cherry flowers away

    2. Your cherry tree is beautiful. At least you were able to enjoy the cherry flowers for a while. Occasionally, a freeze was so hard, the buds on my magnolia trees turned black and dropped to the ground. Nature can be harsh.

  8. As usual information here which I didn't know so - you really keep us informed.

  9. I love that pic. There are quite a few blackbirds around here, and a notorious sparrow gang. I'm getting lots of entertainmen from them.

It was like this last year. A former neighbour planted out loads of plants and lost most of them in the end of March/beginning of April cold snap.

  11. I would like rain next week, lovely weather for the next two and then rain to finish off the month. Things are pretty dry around here.

    God bless.
