It's been really cold all week. We had the 'Blackthorn Winter' and now 'The Cowslip Winter'....about time we had some spring. On some nights the temperature forecast was so low that I brought the greenhouse plants in to stand on the floor just inside the patio doors, other nights I just covered them with fleece. And of course it rained, not all day everyday but sometime on most days. It's really getting me down and I've had several days feeling well under par hibernating on the settee with snooker on TV and book in hand.
Anyway...........when I went up the road for the Following A Tree post last weekend, at a moment when it wasn't raining, I took this photo of the view over the village.. The Barley or Wheat is growing well.
On the other side of the road this huge field is recently drilled - Barley? Wheat? I looked but couldn't find any seed in the drill lines so it might be a spring sowing of Oil-seed Rape as the seeds of this are tiny.
Buds on the Hawthorn waiting to open.
I've been sorting photos on and off all week and putting them into my new photo storage box, found some very old ones to share on local Facebook Groups. But looking at some of the photos is making me so sad for a life lost that I may have to stop!
Talking about local internet sites - on the Nextdoor website someone was moaning (People moan about the strangest things!) about low flying aircraft over their village and someone else offered this website to see more https://airplanes.live/ https://airplanes.live/. What fun! Transport plane flying in from China and a Chinese registered huge airbus flying the other way. Ryanair, Tui, and Easy jet holiday planes coming and going across Suffolk from Luton and Stansted airports and lots of little planes buzzing about over small airfields, Apache helicopters from the Army base at Wattisham going round and round in loops and a plane registered from the USA but coming from the East. Then a massive French registered Hercules coming out of Mildenhall and the East Anglian Air Ambulance took off and went round in circles near Cambridge and a Coastguard plane came into the area from up north........... I could spend too much time watching this site!
No boot sales this weekend as rain is forecast both mornings - what a surprise!
I've been very bad at reading and commenting on other blogs just lately and answering comments, making me feel very guilty so I'm taking a few days off blogging although the end of the month frugal month notes is almost done for Tuesday and I'll do the library book photo on Friday or Saturday.
Be back then
Sue
Don't ever make the mistake that I made: a friend of my mother's was flying to Costa Rica and I followed its course online - only for it to disappear somewhere over the Caribbean. Still don't know what happened but they arrived safe and well.
ReplyDeleteVery strange.
DeleteSuffolk is fairly quiet compared to how many planes are over London at any one time -amazing there aren't more crashes - the air traffic controllers must be very skilled at their jobs
"Scaraveen". It's the wind of the cuckoo. An Irish term for April to May when it can be very cold. My tomato ๐ plants are taking ages to grow this year.
ReplyDeleteNot heard of the Cuckoo wind - just know it's blinkin'cold!
DeleteStill cold and wet here, too. I think it's getting everyone down. Impossible to do anything outside and not much point in buying plants you can't get in the ground. I tell myself I'm wilding the garden.
ReplyDeleteI keep checking the long range forecast for warmer weather
DeleteI enjoyed reading your post about the wagtails yesterday. They are one of my favourite birds, we often have waggies around our house. How did you get into Scouting? I became a helper at Cubs, then a leader as I used to babysit the Cub leader's lads and then a Scout leader in the town we moved to when my boys were in the Scouts. Very happy memories of meetings and camping trips. We camped twice in Scotland, our daughter and another leader's daughter were both in the guides so they came too. Quite a trek from Somerset.
ReplyDeleteWe live near a Naval Air Station where years ago the Harriers were based and they would just whoosh through the skies with no warning. When the UK had a fleet of Hercules they would fly very low near our house twice a day. Now we just have helicopters, my husband used to work in the Apache project locally before he took early retirement. He can recognise the various helicopters by their sound......
I first helped with Cubs when a boyfriend (later first husband) was asked to help as he was 16 and had just finished being a Scout . I lasted longer than he did and Colin had also been a Scout and carried on as a Scout leader in the group which was how we met.
DeleteWe moved to the smallholding just as the US bases a few miles away at Bentwaters and Woodbridge were finishing. Their jets were fast and loud!
Still cold here too and the sun is shining intermittently with cold winds too. The only bonus was I got lots of washing dried outside yesterday. Catriona
ReplyDeleteYes I managed a large load dry on Friday - need another dry day for another load now
DeleteI think this weather is getting us all down. Hopefully May will also warm up a bit after a chilly start. Chin up!
ReplyDeleteI keep looking at the long range forecast - it's not very reassuring!
DeleteI loved seeing Concorde flying over our house every day. We don't get much now, just local two-seaters and the occasional Chinook or police helicopter.
ReplyDeleteThat plane site is frightening if you look over London!
DeleteI know what you mean about being sad at the loss or losing your previous life. I think now of things I won't be doing again and it is a loss. I think especially when you have had a very physical way of life as I have like you. I am sad but not depressed while grateful for the health, if not the suppleness, I still have. Su
ReplyDeleteWith it being too cold for getting outside makes things even worse.
DeleteThis Spring has been truly horrible. Like so many, I am fed up with this weather, it's been cold and raining it seems since October!
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you having a few days off from blogging, I am amazed that anyone can find something to write about every day. Enjoy your rest! More time for reading a good book.
I can usually find something to write about but can't always find something to say in commenting elsewhere
DeleteLooking through old photos of our 'former lives' and earlier times can be very sad can't it. There are somethings that can never be returned to, people we have loved and lost, and the sad memories that have taken a while to settle down are all brought back to the forefront of your mind. It can leave you feeling very melancholy. Maybe a break from the photos for the sake of your peace of mind.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked to find a thick layer of ice on the windscreen of my car the other morning, it took a while for the sun to melt it once she came up. Thank goodness all my little seedlings are on the windowsill inside and not yet planted out.
I need to sow some more seeds inside as seeds sown in the greenhouse are doing nothing and I need to fill the big greenhouse pots. Just no enthusiasm in this cold weather
DeleteThe aeroplane site sounds addictive!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your blogging break and I'm looking forward to future posts x
Alison in Wales x
The plane site is very addictive - everytime a plane goes over!
DeleteThe weather has been weird! This week I went from winter coat, mittens and hat to today when we are supposed to reach 80°F! Looking ahead it looks like the cold weather might be done. (maybe!!) ;)
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your book post!
Wish cold weather was finished here and no more rain needed
DeleteOh, Piffle. Blogposts will always be there. Don't feel guilty!!!
ReplyDeleteSome people get a bit upset if you don't comment on their blog!
DeleteI don't. I really don't. Don't ever feel pressed by me. I don't see blogging as a transactional activity.
DeleteIf the rain and cold could stop and sunshine and warmth take over, this would be helpful for us all. Photos can bring both happiness and sadness. I understand as I hold all the family photos as well. The hawthorn flowers are glorious. The fields are looking productive and this is a happy sight. Enjoy your time away from blogging. All will be fine, in due time.
ReplyDeleteI have some lovely old photos of family long gone but some of those at the smallholding are difficult to look at now without sadness
DeleteI could watch the aircraft site for quite some time. What else do you do when it's so cold! Well, clean the bathroom I suppose. I've risked the greenhouse plants in the greenhouse, and they seem OK.
ReplyDeleteThat website is totally addictive! I need to fill up the big pots in the greenhouse to get the toms and cucs out of their small pots
DeleteEvery so often we will watch the path of aircraft just for the fun of it. I hope you get nice weather soon, hibernating for so long is definitely mood destroying.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
With the rain and floods we had in the Autumn I feel as if I've been hibernating for 6 months which is far too long!
DeleteRemembering my life lost makes me sad and I try not to but get a bit moribund some days. Nice to see the cowslips growing wild around here.
ReplyDeleteSorry that you are feeling a bit down. I have a little trouble looking at photos of Mum sometimes. It makes me sad that she's no longer here. I try to treasure her memory, but sometimes it just hurts.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your time away from blogging. Be kind to yourself. Take care.
That airplane site sounds fascinating. I wish we had something like that here - or may I don't, because I would just end up watching it all the time!
ReplyDeleteIts world wide I think
