Looking Forward to Events in Suffolk

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be flying over the Mid Suffolk Light Railway tomorrow. It's the first of their two day special event ................ "The Middy in the War Years" . We shall certainly see the planes from home - which is just a few fields away

or from the museum which we'll be visiting tomorrow or Monday, depending on the weather.

In mid May there is an Antique and Vintage Fair at Stonham Barns (where I go for Sunday Car boot sale) which is close enough for a visit. I don't think it's a very big fair but as we don't get many Antique Fairs in Suffolk  I'll probably go and have a look.

At the end of May is the 2 day Suffolk Agricultural Association Show in Ipswich. It's many, many years since I last went. What I like best is to watch the show jumping and the other events in the Main Ring. I'm not sure if I'll go or not, it involves an awful lot of walking but at least I do qualify for an over 60 reduced admission ticket. I shall think on it. Maybe if Colin is still going to hospital on Wednesdays and Thursdays he could drop me off at the gate, which would at least save me the long walk from the car park. I'm not sure I would want to drive up, I'd be bound to lose the car among the 1000's parked there!

Then on September 8th the Cycle Tour of Britain is having a stage through Suffolk.  It's going by the end of the road...................where we used to live! Darn!  BUT it will be going through the village where my sister lives and right by the end of their road, so maybe we could visit her that day to watch!
When the tour was in Suffolk - must have been about 10 years ago - I cycled a couple of miles to watch them - Bradley Wiggins included - flash by in a few seconds. Apart from the cyclists  it was interesting to see all the other things involved with a stage of racing - the police, the team cars with spare bikes, the cameras etc. Although not as exciting as our friends experience of the Tour of France passing through their Essex village a couple of years ago.

Back Tomorrow or Monday
Sue

  1. Are you close to where RAF Bentwaters was located? That's where I was based with USAF in the late 70s. Museum on base? There was supposed to be one there eventually. Sounds like you're going to be busy. I was bummed that I couldn't stop into any thrift stores when we were out to the coast for a couple days. Never know what treasure one may find.

    1. No we are not close to Bentwaters now, we were closer at the smallholding. There is a Cold War Museum there, but haven't been.
The museum near us is the Mid Suffolk Light Railway Heritage Museum.

  3. You might be out in the countryside but there seems to be plenty to keep you busy. Disappointingly, the Tour isn't coming near us this year. I do hope you get to see it.
    Have a lovely weekend. X

  4. Laughed so much at your comment re leaving the car parked up with 1,000 others. Many years ago we went to the Royal Show at Stoneleigh and rather than everyone in my car queue for parking, I dropped them off, parked up in a field and met them in the arena. When it came time to leave I said I'd parked in the field only to find that there were about 15 fields being used for parking. And I hadn't noted which one I was in! We had to wait hours for the car parks to empty and then be driven around by the security until we spotted my little blue mini. Oh the shame of it all!

    1. Loved your story! Read this out to family who were visiting. Son suggested taking picture of row number with phone and then remembered I only have an old phone..no camera!

  8. We parked at Fairford Air show once and thought we would tie a balloon one of our kids had in the car from a recent party to mark us out. Left feeling smug.Hours later, thousands of cars parked, we returned to find 50 or so other parents obviously had balloons in their cars too. We all looked at the 5 year old and asked "What colour was your balloon then?" No ideas were forthcoming and we spent ages looking for the car anyway!

  9. Hi Sue, I've been a lurker for a few years and have followed your ups and downs avidly. I live on the south coast, but come to Suffolk for events at Sutton Hoo and for History Alive at Stoneham barns as I am a Saxon re_enactor. Best wishes to you both. Paula x
