Peace and Quiet

When we moved to the smallholding in 1992 it was lovely and quiet. I could wait with the children for the school bus and sometimes no other traffic would pass us.

Then the traffic increased, a road was closed for several weeks and people found going along our road was a good shortcut and carried on using it even after the other road re-opened. Waitrose and Tesco opened in Saxmundham and for several  villages coming along our road was the easiest way there. Many new houses were built in the towns and villages near us and the roads got busier. We had The A12, The A1094 and two busy B roads all within 4 miles so whichever way the wind was blowing we could often hear traffic in the distance

Living here at the cottage is just like going back to 1992 at Knodishall. We are up a lane  so no passing traffic at all but even driving on the small roads around us it's possible to go for a couple of miles and not meet another car. There is just one A road within 5 miles and we can only hear it if the wind is blowing from that direction.

If it works there is a very short video here, if it didn't work.......sorry!

Down at the bottom of our little meadow it is wonderfully quiet, the trees have all greened up and its a small mini wood already.

( Edited to say.........I can't get the video on my own post! but other people seem to be able to see it,but just in case here is a still photo taken where the footpath steps out onto the farmers field from the bottom of our meadow, looking back through the meadow to the house and lane)

Being able to stand there and hear nothing except the wind through the trees is just so restorative and  the other day  Colin cut up a pallet and made a seat, so now we can sit for a while and enjoy the peace and quiet.

  1. How wonderful you have that peace and quiet back. That is what I miss most about living here where we do, although we have countryside round us, we are also surrounded by the M25 so there is a constant roar, some days worse than others. I am reminded of just how loud it is when I get home from my parents house in NZ which is in the country! I long to move to somewhere quiet in the country again.

  4. It sounds perfect. And to have your own bench to sit on to enjoy it is even better. It's so good that you have found your home again. X

  5. Reading your post I thought "Yes, how much traffic has changed our lives" and I do not miss traffic one bit as, although not with your aspect, I do not front the main road and it is bliss. You little woodland glade is just heaven on earth and I'm so happy for you that you've found it. xo

  7. How I envy you the peace and quiet (in a nice way, lol) I would love to be somewhere more peaceful but I don't think it will happen now. There always seems to be someone making a racket around here.

  8. It must be so peaceful. The only downside to our land is that it is right beside an extremely busy A road.

  9. I live in an increasingly congested area so your lane and property sound like heaven to me. (I could not see the video, however.)

  10. I could see the video. Thanks, it was lovely. We live on a (as we say in the US) "dead end"road. That is, a road with nowhere to go when you get to the end of it. It is about 15 to 17 miles long and ends in the biggest Wilderness area in Colorado. One can only use horses up there or maybe bicycles. It's comforting to know it's there. There is some traffic on our road, not a lot really. One can sit on the porch and not hear a car for hours. The noisy part here is the waterfall across the road. It's a seasonal one, made by irrigation water flowing from the mountainside above us. It's quite noisy in May and June. Makes us think we're going deaf, ha, ha. This is what we sought when we first met many years ago. I cannot imagine living in a town again, although, as we age, a long drive to medical facilities might be daunting. It would be at least 45 minutes for an ambulance to reach us. We'll just stay here and hope for the best!

I always think of growing up in beautiful Kesgrave when it was a small village (became a town in 2000) we bicycled all over far and wide and hardly saw a car on the country roads. Often cycled into Ipswich but would be afraid to do that now.

I'd like to sit on that seat that Colin made.

    1. Kesgrave High school is well known for being the school in Suffolk with most children biking to school. They have cycle paths and underpasses and cycles can use the bus lane too and even cycling right into town wouldn't be too bad as there is a cycle lane nearly all the way. Up the other end of Ipswich where we were it wasn't so good as the roads are narrower.

  12. Hi Sue, Good to hear you are enjoying your new home. One of the plus points living in Devon is the peace and quiet. To sit in our garden and listen to the bird song is a real treat for us, like Colin, David build a very simple bench for us to sit on and I think it is the best thing ever and all the wood was free when we re vamped the garage. Enjoy your new home c

  16. Can't play the video on my phone but will try on my computer. So happy that you have found your peaceful place. It looks beautiful! My sister was diagnosed with non-hodgkins almost 30 years ago when her children were very young and still has very regular check ups. Wishing you both a wonderful, peaceful life in your new home!

  19. Sounds wonderful, Sue!

The only really quiet place I know is in Donegal where my mobile home is - it can be absolutely silent there at times.

  20. Mostly quiet here. We are on a street with about a dozen houses with very little traffic.
Most cars go on the road above or below, so we have a layer of gardens to muffle the light traffic.
