In The War Years

Just across the fields from us is The Mid Suffolk Light Railway Heritage Museum and they held their annual "Middy at War" event so we went to have a look.
The first nice thing was they have a discounted entry for villagers.......half price.

The steam train with passenger carriages was chugging up and down the track. It's only quarter of a mile long at the moment but they have permission to extend another quarter mile............they just need to raise more funds.
They've restored some carriages and goods wagons that would have run in the 30's and 40's.

There were several old military vehicles, a Home Guard display, a couple of stalls selling vintage bits and bobs.

I succumbed to temptation and bought a book (no surprise there, although in my defence this is the only book I've bought all month!)  to add to my WWII Home Front collection-

Then they had a display of American and British Army firing guns.LOUD. Quite a few people came dressed up for the period, something I'd quite like to get involved with I think, although it's really just standing around all day.........so maybe not.

Son and Daughter in Law met us there and we looked round for a while, had a ride on the train, a hotdog and drink each and then home again. The sun was shining but by golly the wind was chilly.

There was no RAF Memorial Flight  flypast due to the weather being too windy for the planes to take off from RAF Coningsby - their home base- disappointing.

Thank you for all the comments on my poor frugal list, not a patch on the old days of 2013 - sadly.
Welcome to new followers especially everyone who is remembering to click again on my new blog - much appreciated.

Back Tomorrow

  1. What a wonderful day out ~ and to have that so near too. Have you seen Michelle's blog "Remembering the Old Ways" I think you'd like it, worth a look anyway, what is there to lose?

  2. I've got the theme to Dad's Army going round my head now!

We took a nose around the old B&Q site yesterday. Go Outdoors and Bounce are setting up nicely, and very discreetly on a door there are B&M stickers with work clearly going on inside! I'll keep you posted. Violet is obsessed, so she keeps making Bill drive around the carpark to see what's going on!

    1. So the rumours about The Range were wrong - bother, although B&M will be easier to look at "Our" end of town! We more often than not go into Ipswich the back way through Henley or Westerfield so will look forward to updates!

    1. Yes that's what's got me interested in them. I'm certainly to old for the JIve style and wouldn't want to be posh with furs as some people were wearing on Sunday!

  4. Two of our Fleamarket & Antiques Fair customers always dress up in 1940s clothing. She REALLY looks the part - a dainty lady, and always beautifully turned out. I especially like her hats. Their house is also in the 1940s interior style. I think you would get a great deal of pleasure in finding and wearing the wartime outfits - LOVE the look of that book and I don't blame you for indulging.

Good to hear that locals got special rates too. I hope they soon reaise enough money to extend the track. Same thing happened on the Corfe Castle to Swanage line and that now runs between the two. Our local Gwili railway is also extending the line.

    1. It's quite odd that they have so many objections to the railway museum when it first started as it doesn't cause any problems
