February 14th

So who was Saint Valentine?
And why have I never had a Valentine card except for ones made by the children at school when they were little?

Saint Valentine was a 4th century martyr, and little is known about him ......or them because it seems there might have been  two ............ a Roman Physician  and a Bishop in Italy.
The link between Valentines Day and romance dates to the 14th century and was probably due to it being the eve of Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival of fertility. It was also the day the birds were thought to choose their mates.
It was the Victorians who started sending cards and for a time these became comic and rude and the tradition fell out of favour, gradually being revived through the early 20th century.

I've found one weather saying for the 14th

St Valentine Breaks the Back of Winter

So things can only get better from now onwards.

Although it still feels like Winter here and  we've had some really cold winds whipping across the fields. I'm not going very far at all, need to shake off this sore throat, ear ache and general grotty-ness first.

Thank you to everyone for pancake comments..........We had pancakes..........they were good.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  3. I don't think the weather saying is very true for Eastern England. We have been snowed in in late February many a time. And as you will know, it is very cold this way at the moment.

    1. Yes it's that bitter cold wind that's bringing the temps down. I was a bit puzzled by this weather saying too, because it's only 12 days since Candlemas when the weather sayings reckon there is much more bad weather to come.

  9. The only time I had a Valentine's card from my OH was when I had flu and he felt sorry for me! Although he has bought me flowers on the day....once or twice! Blooming fed up with winter here too, we seem to have had nothing but heavy rain, hail and fierce freezing cold winds. Having said that, we've had quite a bit of sunshine too, but it's quite fleeting and is accompanied by that bloody cold wind. Hope you feel better soon.

  10. Jon and I tell each other every day that we love each other. My Valentine gift was a bottle of mould remover, 30% off too! Ha!

  11. Some of the cards are still rude and crude. I forgot to get one for My Retired Man, so I will make one from the heart. It will also save me some money as cards have become very expensive.

  12. Two things:
First, my husband and I used to send each other a card - the same ones every year - even when he got dementia I would put the two cards on the mantlepiece! The one from him to me was one he painted for me (in watercolour) in 1961, before we were engaged!
Second, 51 years ago today I gave birth to my fourth daughter, Natalie Valentina!
    And it snowed!
But, a couple of days later I was hanging out nappies on the line, and it really felt like Spring. I regularly notice the date every year, and realise that the springlike atmosphere has crept up nicely!
My mother always called the 14th the birds' wedding day!

  15. Happy Valentine's Day and good wishes for Col's health ( yours too).
This year I handmade several Valentine cards and gave three to single people ( all over 65) who wouldn't normally expect to get one from us. It was amazing at how happy and surprised they all were!
I have got more fun out of this day than any other Valentine's Day and I am lucky, I still have my one true real life Valentine I married in 1971. JanF
