March.......Weather

A March  page from An Illustrated Country Year by Celia Lewis

Wonder if the lovely weather here in the UK at the end of February might have lulled us into a false sense of security...........because I found this in Chambers Book of Days......

In the Roman calendar March,or Martius, was the first month of a new year. The month was named after Mars, the god of war and the guardian of agriculture. March was the month when both farming and warfare could begin again after winter.

The Saxons called it Lentmonat, or lengthening month, because of the equinox and lengthening of days and this is the origin of the word Lent.

There are many weather sayings,  the best known is

March winds and April showers
Bring forth May flowers.

Also.....................March month of many weathers

Dry days are precious to get seeds sown.................A peck of dust in March is worth a king's ransom

And on the same theme.................A dry March never begs it's bread

William Wordsworth also wrote about weather in March in his poem " To my sister"

It is the first mild day of March:
Each minute sweeter than before,
The redbreast sings from the tall larch
That stands beside our door.

There is a blessing in the air,
Which seems a sense of joy to yield
To the bare trees, and mountains bare,
And grass in the green field.

There's no getting away from the fact that through history we've always liked talking about the weather.

Back Tomorrow

  1. Yes! Indeed I just said as much over on my blog - the weather is the carbohydrate of our gossipy diet.

Interesting that the floral selection is in the purple hues. I love purple and I'm a March baby. P'rhaps it's only natural!

I have just got home from walking Toby, we cut in through Owl Wood and I spotted the first clumps of violets, they really brightened this dull and cloudy day...oops! weather talk!

  4. Think you are right, Sue. I keep feeling there is snow still to come. Beautiful illustration for March flowers.

  5. March is not the best month for me for it's the 32rd anniversary of the death of my dear husband. I see buds on a few bushes and the spring flowers are lovely to see.

    1. Yes I can see it would be a sad month for you.
The violets and primroses are coming along, daffodils still not opening here

  6. I'm a weather talker, too. I love those pictures of the flowers. I would like large framed prints of botanicals in my house. Here, March is still winter. We really don't see flowers, etc. until late April or May. -Jenn

  7. If I could provide you with just some of our rain (but not our snow & ice), I would happily do so. Just squelching along here as March showed up with all of the above early this morning--no respite from winter for us. Next week highs won't get above 3c and -8c temp is expected overnight on Tuesday. Perhaps the weather folklore saying of, "In like a lion, out like a lamb" will work to our advantage this year.

Hoping March isn't too harsh in your neck of the woods...especially after such a mild UK February.

  10. Very strange day where I am, when I went to the shops this morning it felt like November, only needed a few Christmas lights around to convince me! So where are the March winds? I love talking about the weather but I never complain about it whatever we get, pointless as you can’t change it.

  14. Today March showed her kind and loving face. Sunny, nice winter temperatures and a lovely break from what seemed like the continuous cold. However starting tonight and at least until Monday...not so nice. We will be back in the deep freeze once again.

    God bless.

  15. Like Jackie March appeared and showed her king and loving face but overnight everything has changed. Storm Freya is heading our way with all Ferries once again cancelled.

  16. I have just started to follow your blog. I find it very nice and interesting. We love to talk about weather in Norway too!! March can be a month with winter, but spring are slowly coming. So we call it a spring month. Snowdrops are blooming in my garden, so it is the first sign of spring. The March flowers in your book, we will have to wait longer for.
