More from Bury St Edmunds

More of storm Gareth passing by made the weather very rough yesterday. A car ahead of me had to swerve to avoid a man on a little moped or scooter as he was blown sideways out into the road. At home I found  a small pollarded willow down across the ditch. I'll need to try and haul all the branches back to my side of the ditch - although that's a job that will have to wait until things calm down a bit. It means more wood for cutting when Col's brother brings his chainsaw round.

A few more photos from Bury St Edmunds..............last week when the weather was so much better.

In the Abbey Gardens there are  a few bits of the huge Abbey that once stood here.

The River Lark runs along the edge of the Abbey Gardens and a Little Egret was padding about in the shallows under

the Abbots bridge

and a close up

Amazing to think the River was once naviagable all the way from The Wash in Norfolk right into Bury St Edmunds..... Information HERE

Now it's just a shallow stream

In the town I remembered to take a photo of this building, The Grade 1, 17th Century Cupula House. Recently rebuilt after a huge fire swept through the building in 2012

The Cupula on top is quite unusual and the rebuild is beautiful. It's now available To Let and was used before the fire as a restaurant and before that as a hotel.

After charity shops and before the walk down to the church just had to stop for refreshment in Greggs and tried the vegan 'sausage' roll which has had good reviews - a bit tasteless I thought. I'll stick to chocolate doughnuts in future ;-)

Thank you for lots of comments yesterday. It's fun to be known as the Nanna who brings books and cakes, although madam was in quite a grumpy mood when I saw her and didn't even want the new book read........... The terrible twos!

  1. Kids, eh? She'll love it later, of course, and they do grow out of it in time!

I think Bury St Edmunds is another to go on my list of places to visit. It looks delightful!

  2. I love the stone work of the walls on Abbot's Bridge and I am sure I walked passed Cupula House before now when we have visited Bury St Edmunds.
Greggs shares are well up I hear due to the vegan sausage rolls! I haven't tried them - although I am vegetarian I don't like the texture of meat so don't buy any of the meat substitutes or look alikes and the soya used in them blocks my Thyroxin uptake.

  3. We don't have a Greggs anywhere near, but like the previous comment, as an almost vegetarian don't like the textures of vegetarian 'meats'. Lovely photos of Bury St.Edmunds.

  5. I always enjoyed walking around the smaller back streets in Bury. The Cupola reminds me of some buildings in Annapolis. The Maryland Statehouse has a large cupola. Oldest statehouse in continual legislative use in the US--1772. But that sounds almost silly when compared to the age of the abbey.

  6. Such lovely grounds there at the church. From a distance I thought the bridge was made of wood, but small rocks stuck into what? Not concrete?

  8. Another wonderful tour. I must admit to smiling about your Grandaughter, their temper tantrums are always so endearing. How hard it is for them not been able to vocalise their frustrations. My youngest grand child is just starting to grow out of them, fingers crossed.

  9. After 12 years of Nannying I found distraction the best way to deal with most situations and a little safe, supervised and shared water play will stop most grumpys.A few little plastic aerosol lids or cup like containers and some water in a big bowl is good for inside play.
In good weather outside with the tub and washing dolly clothes or washing up teaset pieces or the childs own plastic tumblers and bowls is always good fun.

  10. The photo of the ruins of the Abbey is just beautiful. The Abbots Bridge is so interesting. I read a bit about it online. It is just so wonderful that you can walk into the Middle Ages like that.

  11. So nice to see the water level back up and the birds about. When I was there last summer it was so dry there was no water left under the bridge! It was really strange and quite sad to see.

  12. I think we only went to Bury once, when we used to go and stay with OH's brother on the Essex coast. I can see we missed a lot!
