The Week That Went From February Into March

The sunny and warm weather at the beginning of the week, when it was still February, gave me an opportunity for an unplanned boot-sale visit because  I woke up early last Wednesday and the sun was shining - with no guarantee of weekend sunshine so I zoomed down the A140 (except for the fact that there is a speed limit of 50mph!)

Lots of people selling and buying and I found these............

The plastic food box and the roll of baking parchment cost me 20p, fished out of one of dozens of boxes of house clearance stuff. From the boxes I also found an oven glove with matching word-burner door/pan holder which were 50p and the pink flowery thing new from  Hobbycraft is a needlework kit with scissors for £1, it will be ideal for when I have to provide a prize for the WI draw.
The two hanging  baskets were 50p each. I've got these so I can use the seeds of trailing tomatoes that came with the fruit bargain pack. 3 more toys for Willow were £1. There are a couple of sticker craft things to put away for when the grandchildren are older, they were £1 each as was the Red and Black brand new accounts book (£7.99 label on the back). Total spend £6.70.
Listening to the people who were selling the boxes of house clearance stuff really made me glad that I have started to clear things from the house already. She was telling someone there were 7 full transit vans cleared from the house and that didn't include any furniture and white goods!

The boot sale plus swimming, charity shop and visiting youngest daughter and Florence meant that I was in and out and driving about all week so I was glad to stay at home on Friday when my sister and BIL visited for a coffee.

It looks as if we are in for a rough wet and windy weekend - March coming in like a lion? The vegetable beds are actually really dry so we need any rain we get.

This week I am grateful for
  • Son, Daughter in Law and Willow visiting and bringing lunch to cook here too
  • A very quiet swimming pool to do lots of lengths
  •  Dry weather to finish clearing the veg beds
  • A gift of onion sets from my sister, enough for a row across the bed - very handy.
Thank you everyone for comments this week, I do read them all but sorry for not replying everywhere and also not commenting elsewhere very much.

Hope you all have a good weekend
Back Monday
Sue

  1. Maybe it's an unusual gift but how thoughtful of your sister and what a very useful gift. That's a good car boot haul as well.
I'm glad it's been such a pleasant week for you.

    1. My sister had planted all the sets she needed or had room for so these were spare so I said "Yes Please"

    1. The Red and Black books are really sturdy. and expensive. I have an A- Z one and a big A4 which was going to be a diary or day book but I never got round to starting it - next year maybe.

  3. You find such interesting and useful things at the boot sales you go to - more often than not last year we came away from them with nothing at all. We've realised that there are much nicer (and cheaper!) things to be found at smaller village type boot sales than at the huge ones, which are full of 'professional' tat sellers who charge the earth.

    1. The Saturday boot sale is gradually getting bigger but they have a limit which makes it still a sensible size for getting round. It's a mix of private and trade - more private will be there as the weather gets busier.

  5. I meant to comment on your thrifty food post and forgot, so I will here! Your thrift puts a lot of folk to shame. It for me perfectly illustrated just how little money you need to cook and eat delicious meals. Your enjoyment of the bargains you find and put to full use is a credit to you Sue.

  7. wow, bargains galore! I know for a fact that a roll of baking parchment costs a lot normally. am going to be planting a set of shallots in my tiny vegbed this w/end - never tried onions before so any advice you've got would come in handy! Enjoy!

    1. Onions are just the same as shallots to grow....plant, weed, hope for rain and sun and harvest when the tops start dying down. Leave somewhere airy to dry and keep fingers crossed to avoid any diseases!

  8. Good idea of yours to look ahead when it comes to grandchildren’s interests. Now three of mine are at school they love card and board games which charity shops often have in good condition.

    1. It's handy to buy when I spot something cheap to pop away for later. I hope they all like craft things like my children did.

  9. Car boot sales sound wonderful although I'm not really sure what they are? Is it lots of people selling things from the trunk of their car? Here we have garage and yard sales, which is when people do a clean out and sell things from their garage or yard. Especially in the spring and early summer, buyers take a list of the sales and drive from yard to yard.

    1. Car boot sales are when people load up their cars with stuff to sell and take it along to the car boot site. They usually take a fold up table and park in organised rows so visitors can walk round looking at everything. Usually on a big field where organisers run the sales through the year or maybe a one-off smaller sale as a village fundraiser. The car booters pay an amount to be there - anything between £5 - £20 depending on the site and if they have a trailer or big van. Usually people not selling get onto the site for free although some of the Huge bootsales also charge for buyers to drive in = like 50p a car.
Boot sales usually start early in the morning and finish by midday.Usually once or twice a week

  10. You found a nice selection of items at very good prices! I admire how well you plan ahead for gifts and such. It sounds like you have had a busy and enjoyable week. We are expecting yet another snow storm here tonight. I think our March thinks it is still February! Have a relaxing weekend Sue.

  18. Sounds like your boot sales are what we call flea markets. When we sold the contents of our house several of the buyers had purchased multiple lots. We imagined that they were taking the items to sell at flea markets or on eBay. We were just satisfied to sell it off through the online auction and have it gone.

    1. Yes a flea market is like an indoor car-boot sale

  19. I'd hate the thought of leaving lots of 'stuff' behind for my sons to have to trawl through. I'll live simpler and simpler until it's just me a Pug, a car and a suitcase 😀
