Practicing for the Coronavirus............?

......................................by staying at home!!

Of course that isn't my reason for being at home a lot this week (as far as I know there have been no instances of the virus in Suffolk........... yet) - it was more to do with the weather, lots of gloomy days  and Thursday was just horrible.

Sunday was mostly OK and I got the raspberry/ gooseberry/asparagus  bed weeded and another started then Wednesday was fine and I could have got outside to get the weeding finished but it was the day after having to wear a 24 hour blood pressure monitor - which means waking up every hour during the night when the darn thing bleeps and  pumps itself up, so I didn't have the energy to do much at all.

This week I had my second  'harvest' from the garden.......... chives, chopped into scrambled egg, not quite as exciting as the rhubarb the week before. I've now had a second lot of rhubarb and moved the old dustbin onto another clump.

I decided not to spend the next few winters worrying about how much rain we have and whether I'll have problems with the septic tank pits not draining properly and hardly daring to put any water down the drains, so called up one of the companies who do replacement sewer systems. I want to get a quote from another company too. It will be a big expense (as in £1,000s)  but better to get it sorted and all legal for when it's time for selling.

I didn't need a big shopping trip this week so just popped to my nearest Co-op which is 4 miles away and picked up some fruit. Then I saw this in the fridge reduced price shelf and thought a Green Cheese must be worth a try. It's very tasty - what they call punchy I think.

Since I got it I've been trying to dredge from my memory a children's song about the man in the moon and green cheese - but can't remember what it was.

Many thanks for all the comments yesterday.

This week I've been grateful for
  • A little fine weather to get some gardening done
  • A lovely quiet swim
  • Time for lots of reading
  •

    Have a lovely weekend
    Back Monday

  1. I think it's 'Aiken Drum' but it's cream cheese. X

  2. I got out in my garden this week - sheer desperation as we had a viewing and it was a complete end-of-winter mess! Can't dig anywhere yet though as it's still afloat in the veg plot . . .

Glad you got beds weeded and lots of reading done.

    1. The best thing about raised beds in winter is they don't get too wet (although they get too dry in summer!)

  3. There was a man lived in the moon
lived in the moon, lived in the moon
There was a man lived in the moon
And his name was Aiken Drum.

And he played upon a ladle
    A ladle, a ladle
And he played upon a Ladle
And his name was Aiken Drum.

One of the verses is 'His hat was made of good cream cheese' which could easily be interpreted and 'good green cheese' by a child (or adult, I suppose)

You have reminded me that my chives can be cut now. Lovely!

  4. It looks lovely outside here but still freezing cold so no gardening for me. We looked at changing our septic tank at the cottage and as you say it is a few thousand to do so. These days they do a test to see how the land drains - there is one part of our cottage garden that pools quite a bit - just where we wanted to resite the new tank!

    1. The problem here is the clay soil and all the rain. Its a bit of a worry when you have to think twice about doing the washing!

  5. Fresh chives on scrambled eggs sounds delicious! Good luck on your comparison shopping for replacement sewer systems. If it is causing you worry and you will have do to it anyway before selling the house, then it would be smart to just get it done if you are able. I hate it when there is something I'm always worrying about working properly.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. With the exception of going up the garden path to feed the birds and to pull a few leeks from a raised bed, I’ve not done anything in the garden. It’s like a bog down here! We have very heavy clay soil, so it needs a good few dry days. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be many on the horizon either. Scrambled eggs with chives sounds very tasty!

  7. A frost here this morning but at least that Siberian Thursday has gone and it is fairly bright again. Good to hear you have made the first move in up-dating the septic tank system. I am staying in this morning to work on jigsaw puzzle, may go out later.

  8. The man in the moon came down to earth
And asked the way to Norwich
    He went to the South
    And burnt his mouth
    By eating cold please porridge.
I always felt as a child, that the MITM must have been sensible, if he recognised the best place on earth was East Anglia. But I have never liked pease porridge. (or green cheese)

    1. That's another rhyme about the man in the moon - cold pease porridge sounds unappetizing

  10. Best to get the septic tank done now as it will give you peace of mind and it will only go up in price.

  11. I read this earlier today, then had to trawl through my old Lincolnshire recipe books - I knew I had read something about green cheese. It took a while, and it is a soft cheese, but here it is: Lincolnshire farmers' wives would take some of the green tops of growing young potatoes and extract the raw juice. This juice would be put into their home-made cream cheese and would make green lines in the cheese...apparently it was excellent! I must admit that I would not recommend trying it!

I hope you BP results were satisfactory.

    1. Think I would avoid anything made with green bits from potatoes!
Is there a cheese made with nettles? maybe wrapped in nettle leaves? or I might be imagining it.

Haven't heard about the BP. I'll ring next week if I don't get a phonecall

    1. Puzzled as to why this is called Snowdonia Green Thunder as the address of the maker seems to be near Ipswich.
      It's very tasty.

  13. Sorry you have had rough weather down your way Sue - we have had four days of lovely Spring weather with barely a breath of wind. Now today the wind is up again and it is cloudy and chilly - capricious as always is March.

  18. I always thought "green cheese" referred to a freshly made cheese (such as a homemade cottage cheese) that had not been aged. I never thought it might refer to its colour.
Chives with scrambled egg on toast is one of my favourites :)
