Bee-Orchids are Back

The beautiful Bee-Orchids are back in the grass around by the cutting bed.
In 2018 there was just 1 and this year there are 5.
I've photographed them before, but find them just as special every year.

One of the Bee-orchids is right in the middle of where I cut with the big mower so I'm having to remember and swerve around it.

The aren't so many Pyramidal Orchids on the meadow this year, perhaps it was too dry and hot earlier.

How did I forget to give a mention to the Summer Solstice on Saturday - it was a proper summer day here and still good daylight after 10pm but then on Sunday I woke to a gloomy morning, rain and strong winds and it didn't feel much like summer at all, everyone who had outdoor plans for Father's Day must have been disappointed.

Back Tomorrow

  1. I am envious. Never seen one let alone had one growing locally. Rare orchids are sometimes reported as growing on various Carmarthenshire roundabouts and are then promptly reported being mown down the following week . . .

We are back to sunshine again now after 3? weeks of greyness/rain.

  2. Oh, that is so lovely! Do you have any bollards to put down, just until the grass is so much longer it is a reminder in itself?

  3. My bee orchids are very good this year, they have multiplied. Yesterday turned out alright in the afternoon, hot and windy. We sat outside at my brother's sheltered from the wind.

  4. havent spotted any this year but what we do have is dozens of mulleins where as in 15 years we usually get only one or two , should be a good year for mullein moths as their are tons of caterpillars

  6. Beautiful flower. Thank heavens the gloomy start to yesterday didn't last long and the sun returned so we could celebrate fathers day with family members outside.

  7. That orchid is amazing, although to me it looks more like a grumpy little alien stood in front of the petals with his hands on his hips :-)

  8. Isn't nature amazing that not only does she produce hundreds and thousands of different flowers/plants she goes that little bit further and gives us different varieties of the same flower? You just have to marvel at her imagination.

  10. That's a first for me, never seen one of those before but so unique and beautiful.
The weather was fine her on the south coast but so windy. Our son rang from Glasgow and it was pouring there, so much variation on this little island.

It poured here first thing yesterday morning but then turned sunny and warm. We certainly get regional variations in our weather.

  22. I live in Spain, out of town, and have seen these beautiful wild flowers. I thought they must be some kind of wild orchid, now I know they are Bee Orchids. Previous years there have only been yellow ones, but this year there were pretty purple ones as well .

  23. We have a few dozen Bee orchids this year, but not as many of the Southern Marsh orchids this year. All in the middle of Woodbridge. Still too many to weave around with a lawn mower
