The small church of St Peter Chillesford is set up a sandy track on the edge of this very small village in the Suffolk Coast and Heath area.
The tower dates from the 14C and is built from corralline crag rather than the usual Suffolk flint. The corralline crag is found in a nearby small quarry.
From Wiki.........The Coralline Crag Formation is a series of marine deposits found near the North Sea coast of Suffolk and characterised by bryozoan and mollusc debris. The deposit, whose onshore occurrence is mainly restricted to the area around Aldeburgh and Orford is a series of bioclastic calcarenites and silty sands with shell debris, deposited during a short-lived warm period at the start of the Pliocene Epoch of the Neogene Period . Small areas of the rock formation are found in locations such as Boyton and Tattingstone to the south of Orford as well as offshore at Sizewell.
Crag is a local word for a shelly sand. Coralline Crag has sometimes been used historically in the Suffolk coast area for building and a number of quarries exist. The tower of St Peter's Church in Chillesford is one of only two built using the rock.
It gets mentioned in the 100 treasures in 100 churches book because of the amazing modern stained glass Ascension window. Commissioned in 1991 and designed by Suffolk stained glass artist Surinder Warboys
In comparison the font dates from the 13C
The chancel with the East window, altar and lovely colourful altar cloth designed by Isobel Clover who is well known in Suffolk as a tutor of embroidery etc
The West window is also stained glass, this time Victorian
View through the church with an unusually narrow arch between Nave and Chancel. There is an ongoing debate over the two squints. (the two glass-less windows each side of the arch). They are not as old as the church but may have replaced older ones or maybe just made to copy another church.
Is this the old path from the road through two rows of trees to the church door?
Now there is a car park and a walk up a small mound through the long grass.
Unlike most of the churches I've visited which are spick and span with flowers and well polished, Chillesford was dusty and full of cobwebs. It looked as if no one had been in for months - a bit sad.
There's more info on Simon Knott's Suffolk churches website HERE
What happened on Day 13 at the Olympics ?
That is sad with such a beautiful stained glass window, font and other features.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day with family.
Wonderful modern window contrasting well with the Victorian
DeleteLovely stained glass - but sad that things seem a little neglected (pandemic issues perhaps) Have a glorious weekend with family!
ReplyDeleteand the dusty sandy soil all around too.
DeleteLovely windows. Cheese straws, yum.
ReplyDeleteI tested a cheese straw and yes very yum!
DeleteThe church is rather classic in its simplicity and that Coralline Crag tower is certainly striking.
ReplyDeleteHad to look up Coralline crag and it explains why one of Aldeburghs small roads is called Crag Path
DeleteLovely to see the new and old stain glass and the altar cloth is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have a lovely weekend ahead of you. Enjoy yourself.

Thank you it will be lovely to see all Grandchildren together
DeleteSo sad to see such a beautiful, striking church standing un-loved and neglected. That amazing modern Ascension window - WOW! - perfectly complemented by the work of art that is the embroidered altar cloth below it. I truly hope that the supporters of the church are able to return very soon, dusters, polish and brooms at the ready, then the flower ladies. I wonder how long it is since services were held there; is there a vicar?
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your family reunion this weekend - keep baking!
Not really neglected - just needing a clean. Hilary below has found the details of services.
DeleteBeautiful little church Sue - sad it had a neglected air.
ReplyDeleteYes the cycling Gold was superb but the scoring seemed strange - but didn't Matt look emotional when he won. A lovely moment after all the hard work he has put in - and his family went mad at home
I don't understand the scoring in lots of Olympic events! I Just enjoy the brilliance of the athletes and their joy at winning
DeleteAs Rambler said the Ascension window and the altar cloth are perfection. I looked at the A Church Near You website and there are 18 churches in the Benefice!! and there is a service at Chillesford once a month. Your photos are wonderful, thanks for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteThe lady who looks after the 18 churches in the Benefice was a chaplain at Ipswich hospital and took my late husbands funeral service 3 years ago.
DeleteThe blue in that modern window is simply magnificent. It and that modern alter cloth work so well to make the church feel relevant for today, and still have connection to its history. Shame that it all has a neglected air about it - maybe a victim of falling congregation in lockdown perhaps?
ReplyDeleteIt's in the middle of heathland so probably the light sandy soil gets in easily. I expect the congregation is tiny as the village is just a few houses, farms and a pub
DeleteI wonder about that narrow arch that divides the church. Reminded me of "first class" and "economy" on an airplane!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your family gathering!
That church is so beautiful -- Very simple and with lovely light within. I love the windows. Beautifully done.
ReplyDeleteLove your church photos and the fact you are exploring them in your area.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely church with wonderful very old stained glass windows. The older windows seem more intricate and the color more brilliant. Dust is hard to keep up with. The structure itself looks perfect and this means a lot. Being a small country, 51 medals for Britain is quite remarkable and a testament to UK athletes. It is always nice to see family and catch up with everybody, especially the grandchildren that grow so quickly. Nothing better than family time!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely Chillesford Church looks. St Peter would have been chuffed to see it. I like the way that the altar cloth complements the modern stained glass window. Rather than using the piscine I would prefer to visit the bushes in the churchyard.
ReplyDeleteLovely church in a gorgeous setting! Reminds me of economy and first class also. Enjoy your family, we are locked in by ourselves for another week here.I wasn't sure that the olympics should have gone ahead but have enjoyed watching it as the weather is wintery so it's kept us distracted.
ReplyDeleteThe church tower is so nice and so is the remainder of the building. Sad nobody has been there for awhile. Hopefully people will be there again soon. Our church has been opened for months now, in Oregon. Megan and I watched Team USA basketball gold medal game on Friday evening. She realized it can be watched online via laptop computer. So she set it up in living room and attached to our Roku tv. Team USA beat the Team France 87-82. Lillard, who plays for the Trailblazers was on the team. Good to watch it. We were with our son, dau-in-law and adorable grandchildren this a.m. at a park by a river. So good to see them again! Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteI was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
ReplyDeleteliver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
