"Cucumber 'Anbar' is an all female hybrid, with the ability to set fruit without pollination – so fruits well even in poor summers with fewer pollinating insects. Anbar has excellent disease resistance.

 I said
A short and stumpy cucumber but a month earlier than predicted and very good. Given that large cucumbers are 50p each at the moment my 4 plants need to produce 20 (of this size) cucumbers to cover the cost of the seed. I sowed seeds of two different sorts of cucumber but three of my four plants are these small ones and I'm not sure about the other one. I really ought to know to label things better after all this time! And I really only have room for 3 plants.

    1. If they died at seeding stage it could be too much water? Later it could be to dry!

  2. Lovely. I had trouble germinating my Marketmore cucumbers which are suitable for growing outside, and finally they are doing much better. Going to plant one outside and the others in the Poly House to compare.

    1. Haven't grown outdoor cuc's for a long time. Mine are squashed in the greenhouse withe tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. The cucs look best of all. Toms look sad!

    1. At the smallholding we had a friend who came for eggs, would buy a cucumber and then munch it on the way home!

  4. My cucumber plants are just starting to bud so it will be a while before they have fruit. I stocked up in Lidl this week as cucumbers are 39p. I will have courgettes shortly though. I don't buy expensive seed so I suppose I'm playing Russian roulette. I am growing more flowers to plant near to attract the pollinating insects.

    1. Another couple of weeks before we get courgettes. Its the tomatoes that are my problem this year - curling up and dying.
