Gated

This is the top of the lane and before the gates were done anyone could drive straight  up the lane, right around the Turkey oak and out via the other entrance. My new gates have stopped all that.

Now anyone driving up the lane is stuck............Ha! they have to reverse back down again.

Rob, my next door but one neighbour who runs a family business doing gardening type stuff had one gate already- that's the dark one already "weathered". The little gate to the left of it has the footpath signs on it and a spring so that it shuts by itself.

There's still another job to do - just need a  couple of rolls of willow fencing, which will go from the gate post, around the hedge, making the spot under the Turkey Oak very sheltered and filling in the gaps . The posts are here and Rob will put the willow fence up when it arrives.

I think it's defined the boundaries and put people off getting into the garden behind the house or driving to the workshop and it's made it obvious to people using the footpath that they are on private land.

Thanks for comments over the last couple of days.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  2. Mo took the words out of my mouth- hopefully you'll feel more secure with no more surprise visitors

Off topic- every time I see your new header picture I realise how much I miss having a cat around the house. Your photo just oozes warmth and 'companionship'

  7. Nothing beats those good solid farm gates - we had some double ones made for the entrance to our cottage. I am surprised if you have walkers that they have not been using you as a car park!

  8. Well done. That has set down your privacy in large letters. That will really help you feel more safe and secure at night.

  9. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac in a small village. When we moved in (30 years ago) we would often find footprints crossing our garden on frosty mornings. I insisted that we installed a high locked gate and instantly felt more secure. I have never regretted it.

  10. Hope it makes you feel more secure. Do people drive down my mistake or is it obvious the lane leads to nowhere. xx

  11. Often folk have used these places as short cuts or somewhere they have always driven - the gates are a super idea and apart from anything else they look very smart. I am not particularly nervous living alone but nevertheless things like this make one feel safer, so well done you.

  12. At least with the gates, you won't have to put up with folks using your driveway and garden as if it were part of the road. That can lead to a lot of wear and tear on your property, not to mention the invasion of privacy. Money well spent.

  13. And your private land, should be private!

But the idea of Used By All footpaths, is a different matter, I believe. It is a Sacred Privilege...

This is one of those things, which was fine, in olden days. But today, with so much more weirdness and vandalism, I'd really not like to by law, have to allow walkers, on my land.

But, I don't live there, so it is not mine, to say. Very interesting topic though... Which I went off topic, and got on. lol

  14. Good for you! People sometimes lack respect, we live at the end of a private road and I get really miffed if someone strange drives up it. Fortunately, that isn't very often.

  16. Won't it be annoying every time you have to drive out? I'm afraid I would just leave them open all the time (too lazy to get out of the car to open and shut them!)

  17. It sounds safer - especially since you are on your own!

  18. They are good gates, it's surprising how much safer I feel when our gates are closed.
