Full Moon and New Leaves

In the early hours of this morning the  full moon was a Supermoon. According to my Almanac it is 357,030km away and this is the closest the moon will be to us this year when full. Making it appear 14% larger and 30% bigger than when furthest away. I walked down the meadow just before 8pm last night and took a couple of photos.
A lovely clear night after a warm sunny day.

In a little book called Field and Fen, which is a collection of articles from The Eastern Daily Press, a Norfolk newspaper,  I found this description of how leaves unfold.

The pages enlarged

The warm weather last weekend has opened up many leaves, green is spreading over the countryside.

Still tightly closed are the fig leaves on my small tree and the Walnut in a garden down near the road.
Fig leaves tightly closed

But other leaves are opening (my camera  has decided not to focus on close up so these pictures are awful - or it might be me not keeping still enough-)

I'm so lucky to have all this green around me.

Back Tomorrow

  1. My camera does that. It's a nuisance because sometimes it's fine and sometimes not. I don't know what the solution is.
    They are still lovely photos!

  2. Sadly it was cloudy here last night, so we couldn't see the moon! Thank you for showing me it.

  3. What is it about the moon that feels so personal. I could stare at it for ages.

  4. Well, I had never even amen the time to even consider the science of leaves. It's fascinating. Thank you for teaching me something new.

  5. I saw the moon at 2.50am, between a gap in the clouds. It looked creamy and perfect.

  6. The moon was beautiful last night and I sat and watched it for quite a long time. Tonight we have no moon, just clouds and rain.
Fascinating how leaves unfold, nature really is amazing :)

  7. I looked at the moon last night it was beautiful and then I noticed a big spider on the ceiling, I cannot kill them so I used my box I keep to collect it and took it to the back door and told it to run away and see the moon.
I spent a lovely afternoon in the garden and chatted to my neighbour him telling me about the village (I have only been here 2 years) -- he lives in the village all his life, it was like old times when we use to chat over the garden fence that was years ago.
    Enjoy the day,

  8. Now I'm fascinated by "biomimetics" and will have to do some research on that... Missing my Norfolk fig tree. Maybe if I do get there in the summer there will be fruit. Slept through the moon thing last night.

  9. Thank goodness spring is still happening. It would be even more miserable if that had been canceled too.
I missed the full moon. There were full clouds overhead at sunset, rain and wind in the night, and clouds yet this morning.

  10. The moon was gorgeous last night wasn't it, I stood and watched for ages while the dogs had a last run around. It made the band of mist that lay low across the River Conwy look magical and mysterious.

With your camera try holding it for longer than you think necessary and let the focus pick up what you are trying to get before pressing the shutter button. It works for me ... sometimes. It was a tip I got off my photographer brother, but then he despairs at my basic digital camera with it's built in blurry lens and keeps trying to give me tips, the most usual one being 'get a new bloody camera'. But I like my old camera and I'm used to blurry blobs :-)

  12. Does your camera have a close up setting? Often a little tulip icon or called macro? Be sure to switch it back if you use close up mode.

    2. I was going to say that as well! I usually take more than one photo just to make sure it looks good. Most of the time there is a middle square and that's what you want to focus on as well. You may be too close to the item but the background is clear.. hope that helps too. I enjoyed the 1st moon photo. It was dark when we went outdoors. Megan took her telescope out to look at it as well. I am enjoying tulips here and other flowers as well. Been warm this week, which is good. Have a blessed week and Easter!

  13. What beautiful pictures of the moon! I have never been able to get good moon photos. The description of the leaf emergence is interesting. I love trees in all seasons but in the Spring they are truy special.
