Saying Thank You, Felixstowe and a Look in the Greenhouse

Thank you to everyone for comments about the Bee-Orchids. I love the randomness of how they just pop up one at a time unannounced and still quite rare too.

Yesterday morning early I headed out to see the sea at  Felixstowe - what an adventure! Sadly the A14 is back to being full of trucks and just as busy as it ever was. I met up there with Son, DiL and the two youngest grandchildren for breakfast on the beach and a short paddle. Son took Youngest Granddaughter in the sea and she didn't want to come out saying........ as 2 year old's do............ "I NOT cold" through chattering teeth! There were lots of people there by mid morning - but plenty of room to keep well spaced. I took my camera but for some reason it wouldn't take a photo - hope I haven't got sand in the works. The wind was straight off the North Sea so a bit chilly and we all headed home again by noon.

It would be good to have a time lapse camera to watch this  first Aubergine grow. It looks bigger every day, took this photo last Friday and it's now nearly big enough to eat

Once again something has gone seriously wrong with my tomato labeling, these are NOT the small yellow plum Ildi that they ought to be!

These are definitely red Big Mama! But when you're waiting for your first homegrown tomato of the year then anything will do.

And this is something I've been meaning to try for ages
It's not a tomato plant grown from seed but a pinched out side shoot.
I shoved it in a pot of soil to see if it would root and as it thrived I've just moved it into a bigger pot and if it keeps growing it will go into a much bigger pot and hopefully produce tomatoes well into the late autumn.

Back Tomorrow

  2. Didn't know that about the tomato 'laterals' as my Dad called them. It used to be our job as kids to keep them pinched out. I'm not really sure why - as an adult I never bothered and they produced fruit too. Your Red Mamas look fabulous. And that eggplant is certainly doing well.
A day a the beach (even a 'bracing' East Coast one) lifts the spirits doesn't it?

    1. I've spent many happy days and weeks at Felixstowe since I was very little. It's nicer than it was now too with more sand than 60 years ago

  4. That is a lovely healthy looking Aubergine plant. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets tomato plant labels mixed up!!

    1. EVERY BLINKIN' YEAR! how? I have no idea - think the labels swap themselves when I'm not watching

  5. Hi Sue. Another advantage of taking side shoots, they are clones, so think they are the same age as the parent plant and will start fruiting much earlier. My son has success with tomatoes by continually taking new cuttings ,sometimes with new flower buds already on them, then allowing them to grow one spray of fruit only.Helps fight infection. By the way they root easily in water.
    Thanks I enjoy your blog.

  6. A day for families yesterday, as we spent the afternoon with our daughter and grand-daughters. First outing for me since lockdown in March.

Your tomatoes, whatever they are, look nice and healthy.

    1. It must have been lovely to get out and about after so many weeks.
It felt quite strange to be driving further than the supermarket

  7. If I didn't have more tomatoes than I know what to do with, I'd have a go at that too - a great way to use some of those pinched out side shoots.

  9. We have far too many tomato plants already but a great way to use the side shoots. Sounds like a wonderful morning out with the family.

  10. You are WAY ahead of us with your tomatoes etc. A glass greenhouse is a MUST when we move. Must try the side shoots and see if they will take (now we have some good compost again).

A fat envelope on its way to you - hope I have gotten the address right. Let me know if/when it arrives.

  12. Glad you got to go - Mum's been wanting to go to Felixstowe for a while. I'm hoping to hear tomorrow that my sister took her (sister drives, mum doesn't). I think Mum misses going out especially her weekly bus trips to Felixstowe

  13. “I NOT cold”.... followed by warming tantrum when removed from the icy water! Oh, I see the picture so clearly! Lovely! Aren’t they so special at that age. How heartwarming to catch up with them again, and all that fresh air and spacing to keep you all safe. Missing the grandchildren was the very worst thing about Lockdown for me. I’m so glad for you.

  14. Oh! And I meant to say - I’ll bet it wasn’t a labelling error on your part ... but on the growers! We’ve a couple of times got mislabeled seedlings. Such a nuisance.

  15. My father used to grow more tomato plants with that shoot trick. I admired his gardening.
