Half Past March

The car went for it's annual service and MOT on Monday and I didn't even have to take it the 3 miles because Ashley, one of mechanics, now lives in the next village so left his car here and picked up mine as he passed by on his way to work. Later in the morning Tom, the boss, rang up to warn me that out of the four tyres, one would be a MOT fail, one was on the cusp and the two front ones, which were only replaced by them 3 years ago were not going to last much longer either! I resigned myself to a large bill ((sigh)) At least I now have a car with 4 good tyres which should last longer than 3 years as they are a better quality than the make they'd been using............... until they had so many problems.
Good job I know and trust them or I'd think they were ripping off a helpless old woman!
They managed to order the tyres in ,service the car, and get the  MOT done all in one day and Ashley swapped cars again on his way home. The bill was huge...........

The Council Tax statement thing for the year arrived, I eventually managed to get through to the District Council to change it to direct debit so that I'll get the £150 "gift" from the government without having to claim it. My bungalow here is Band D, Clay Cottage was Band F - a saving of £60 a month - thank goodness!

Growing Food..................If only germination was always like this....................

Do I need 8 Aubergine plants? No, but I sowed 8 seeds, just in case, and all 8 have germinated.
Do I need 4 Pointy Red Peppers? No, but I sowed 4 seeds, just in case, and all 4 have germinated.
There are also 5 out of 6 Orange block peppers beginning to pop up. Fingers crossed they stay alive until big enough to be transplanted!
I've being growing my own food for 40 years but every spring I  still get scared of a total failure !

On Wednesday  late evening there was a storm here with rain and  gusts of wind and this is what greeted me on Thursday morning. I'd only moved it from out of the corner where it had stood sheltered all winter just the day before. What a mess.
The stand itself is OK but the clay saucers have either cracked or broken. The wet and windy weather also carried in lots of Saharan sand so the windows, car and everything else are splattered. This happens at least once a year, more usually in Summer and always gets mentioned on the news as if it's never happened before. The sand is just a fine dust so doesn't do any damage, it gets carried here high in the atmosphere then lands on Suffolk and Norfolk.

The buds on the Magnolias are all beginning to open. Still think it's a bit odd to have two Magnolia trees side by side in one small garden but they will stay as they're both a good size.

What gorgeous weather we had here in Suffolk after the Wednesday storm. Lovely sunshine, although a chilly wind in places..........it is only March after all............but I took a chair into the greenhouse and soaked up some sun. The weatherman said yesterday that it might be dry for the rest of the month that sounds very good.

This week I have been grateful for

  • Living in a safe country
  • Sunshine
  • Car service and MOT sorted.
  • Seeds germinating

Guess where I'll be this morning - and with better weather there might be more people selling than on previous Saturdays.

Have a good weekend, I shall return, with or without treasures, on Monday.
Sue

  2. Good thing you're not a farmer then, you'd never sleep. As for the Sahara sand I think it is newsworthy even if we do get it most years. I believe this time we got more sand left by it than I have ever seen before and the light that afternoon was unusual.

  3. Tam has asked me to sow seeds for her this year as she has a flat with a GARDEN but can't move in until May, so wants things under way. I have a good broad south-facing windowsill which I will utilise again as the seed stack gets a bit fally-over if there's a mad March gale despite being weighted-down in the bottom. Sorry about your carefully-found earthenware pots and saucers being shattered. I hope you can find some more at the boot-sales to replace them. Envious of your outing today.

We had the odd light too, but no noticable amounts of red dust on the car. Don't mind seeing it as it brings the warm weather with it.

Sorry you had to have 4 new tyres - hoping these will last a bit longer.

    1. When he told me that they'd put the two new tyres on only 3 years ago I said surely they ought to last longer - thought he might give me a discount - no luck with that! He said these new ones should last 5 or 6 years. Seem to have made the car quieter too

  4. Sorry you had the storm and you lost some pots.
It was a beautiful day yesterday but I made sure I did not overdo it in the garden and just replant a few pots.
Hope you get a few bargains at the car boot.
    Enjoy the weekend.

    1. We still have a chilly wind as it's coming in off the East, but the sun is lovely to see

  5. Sorry about your pots and stand, force of nature has a habit of reminding us sometimes we can't beat it!

I look upon the Saharan dust as Mother Earth distributing her bounty across the world as apparently it contains beneficial minerals, free fertilizer!!

    1. Pity the sand has to land on the windows and car as well as the garden!

  6. March is certainly marching along quickly. What a shame about the broken pots, still in comparason with other things going on in the world it's just a case of put the kettle on and get the sweeping brush out. x

  7. What a shame about all your lovely clay pots, but at least you now have a good bagful of crocks for the bottom of other pots :-)

We didn't get much of the sand at all just a gloriously coloured sky for a while and a very light dusting.

I always feel so much safer when I have four new tyres on my car, and of course it's good to know that they are all the same age.

Hope you have a good weekend. xx

    1. I will definitely make use of the broken bits! will need lots for the greenhouse pots.

I guess the car hasn't had four new tyres all at once since we bought it - should last a while now

  8. Your post reminds me to have my tires checked! Thanks!

  9. Having 4 new tires that will last for 5-6 years is reassuring. Knowing our cars are in tip-top condition is ideal. The wind gust was very forceful to blow over your plant stand. Hopefully, the plants will survive after re-potting. Your seedlings look phenomenal. Such a good start! A magnolia in bloom is always welcomed. The light pink is quite beautiful.

  10. It's good you now have the car sorted out but I'm sorry you had to buy new tires. It's time for me to get new ones too and I dread the cost. Like everything else they get more expensive each year. Have fun with your treasure hunting!

The treasure hunting wasn't very exciting this time....sadly

  11. Growing your own is quite hit and miss, but the wonder of seeds germinating never ceases to amaze me. I had to get 4 tyres 3 years ago, but I need the car so I have to pay up!

  12. Safety is more important than frugality. Tho it doesn't seem you drive enough miles to already again need new tires?

    1. I looked it up and general gist is most tires last 50,000 to 80,000 milles; many are warrantied for that by the manufacturer, not the seller.

    2. I think living up a lane with lots of potholes didn't do them much good at all and the small back roads are often very rough. I certainly don't do that many miles! But the new ones are a better quality

  13. Your Saharan Sand made it onto our News this year as well.
Ouch to the new tyres, but they are important for your safety. What a nice mechanic to swap cars with you like that :)

  16. What a shame your little shelf blew over, there was a quite a strong wind here today even with the glorious sunshine. We are Band E here so don't get the added money, all the houses round us are huge so I'm thinking of getting our bungalow re-assessed.. If you don't ask you don't get!!

  17. 4 new tires! Woo-hoo. My daughter and I were talking tires just this week. She had to replace her daughter's tires, and last did it 90,000 miles ago. I realized mine have over 100,000 miles, and are sorely worn down.

  19. A shame about the breakages and ouch to the cost of 4 new tyres ๐Ÿ˜ฑ At least they should last years now. I went to an antiques fair this morning as the weather was so lovely. Had a great mooch round ๐Ÿ˜Š

  20. Sorry there was some damage to your saucers... Tires are expensive so I hope these last you awhile.

    God bless.

  21. Pot holes in roads will not affect the general wear and tear of the treads of car tyres. Let's face it, you obviously had some faitly cheap tyres on the car and they probably did the life span of 20 to 30000 miles expected of them and you got your moneys worth from them.

  22. The germination rate is impressive. What a shame about the storm tipping over the stand. Thank you for sharing the magnolia bud - I love magnolias.
