The Only Thing I Brought Back.....................

..............from the Isle of Wight  was this (plus photos and memories).

The IOW is well known for being the biggest producer of Garlic in the UK. We didn't go to The Garlic Farm - we didn't think the children would have appreciated it! but I bought this jar of very interesting sounding chutney, made at the farm, from the Quarr Abbey farm shop.

I might send for another jar to go with the small fig tree I got during the spring from a boot sale. They could make a Christmas present for Col's sister and husband. I only bought the tree because it was cheap, I'd not seen any fig trees for sale locally for years, and I thought it could go with me if I moved but it would be silly to keep it as my original Fig is doing so well and I might Not move!
I'm not doing hampers this year as I got a couple of things for them and for my sister and her husband last year so just need to add a 'something' to each present and they are sorted.

The chutney taste test? Very delicious but mainly apple - I was expecting a bit more ooomph!

  1. Good idea about pairing a fig chutney with a fig tree. I tend to avoid things with the label garlic, I do like garlic but in moderation and I always imagine that products labelled like that will be too strong, sounds like I'm wrong.

    1. I'm not a big used of garlic - usually keep a jar of chopped or tube of pureed in the fridge for occasional use. The chutney didn't have much of a garlic taste at all

  2. My OH, being half Belgian, loves mayo with chips, and garlic (in moderation) in cooking. So was quite excited to discover "black garlic mayo"in a Norfolk chippy. Until he tasted it! It is quite unpleasant. I love fig chutney however, and a little garlic might add an extra bit of flavour.

    1. One of the local companies around here makes a garlic mayo - I think I tried it once but it made no lasting impression!

  3. The Isle of Wight is on my list of places I'd like to visit. A jar of fig chutney and a fig tree would make a lovely themed gift.

    1. My 8th visit there I think. It's much busier now than it was in the 60's

  4. I used to buy garlic from the IOW by mail order. Really first class produce.

    1. We didn't realise that on the weekend we were there they had a special garlic festival but that wouldn't have been of much interest to a 4 and 6 year old!

  5. It's an interesting combination of ingredients in the chutney, though I would expect the fig to be overwhelmed by the apple and garlic.
Lovely idea to combine it with a fig tree for a gift.

    1. Seems to be mainly Apple. I wanted tp try it incase it was something I could make with my figs - but I won't bother

  6. I read it as "pig and garlic" - even more interesting!

  7. Certainly an unusual combination in that chutney - from the sound of it I can see why you would expect more "ooomph" :)

    1. I was underwhelmed by the taste - mainly apple - and I've made all sorts of apple based chutneys in the past .
Now I'll stick to my red hot tomato relish.

  8. I think that's the trouble with "boughten" chutneys - never as good as your own!

  9. The things that I learn from blogs!!!! I had never heard of black garlic before and wandered off to have a read about that. I think that you have a remarkable talent for putting together gifts, whether it be hampers or pairings. Perhaps the wisest thing would be for you to make your own fig chutney for them instead of sending off for a jar.

  10. I was surprised you mentioned moving as you are in the middle of painting. I thought you were settling in to where you are now. Are you meaning in the distant future? Or are you thinking of relocating already?

  11. Apple, fig and garlic seems to be an unusual combination. It sounds like the apple overwhelmed everything and made the chutney just ordinary.
Good that you are all sorted for Christmas gifts. I'm getting there.

  12. That sounds like a strange combination lol. Well done with the Christmas gifts already. I did buy some cards while I was back in England as I found some for Granddaughter that I really liked and a few with robins on them but haven't started on the gifts yet.

  13. I never knew that about the IOW. I guess they won't have many vampires visiting there.
I've got a jar of fig and apple chutney in the cupboard, but I think I'll keep it for Christmas. Xx
