The first was by Kate Webb - Hollow Grave.
In 1999 a group of archaeologists are excavating a Bronze Age burial site in the grounds of Trusloe Hall. Then suddenly one of the group disappears . Then there is a sighting of her and a text message and the police stop looking. In 2020 her bag is discovered in the river that presents new evidence. This is the third book featuring DI Lockyer and DC Gemma Broad who are assigned to the case. They have to find out if she really left without her rucksack or has someone been hiding knowledge for 20 years.
Second really good read
The Whistle Blower by Robert Peston.
Robert Peston is better known for being a political journalist for BBC and then ITV and always looking rather dishevelled and difficult to listen to.
But this, his first novel, is thankfully not difficult to read and is actually difficult to put down.
It is 1997 and a desperate government clings to power in the run-up to the General Election. The opposition are just as desperate to win and political journalist Gil Peck watches. He is a respected commentator on politics and thinks he knows all the rules.
But when his estranged older sister dies in a hit in run he begins to believe it was no accident because Clare knew some of the more sensitive secrets in government and one of them might have got her killed.

I enjoyed Whistle-blower. The Kate Webb one looks interesting- and with your family involvement in archaeology, you would appreciate its accuracy. Thanks for the recommendation
ReplyDeleteThe archaeology doesn't really play much part in the story
DeleteI’ve taken a note of the books-I’ll ask at the library. Catriona
ReplyDeleteHope you can find them
DeleteI shall look out for those.
ReplyDeleteI've a recommendation as well. Guilty by Definition - by Susie Dent. Really enjoyable read with, as you'd expect, some interesting words. I'm hoping she's working on another.
Thank you - I'll reserve that at the library straight away. I looked on Fantastic Fiction and her second crime book is due in 2026
DeleteBoth look interesting I am getting a bit tired of Kate Ellis but the archaeological book would be my first choice.
ReplyDeleteKate Ellis books are a bit predictable now she's done 28 in the Wesley Peterson series and number 29 due in August!
DeleteI've read the first 2 DI Lockyer books, I'll look out for that 3rd one in the library. I sometimes find that books written by 'celebrities' (for want of a better word) are a bit of a disappointment. I've just had one by Martin Kemp, a sort of East End gangster type of book - I've always been a fan of his but no, sorry, not a fan of his writing! I gave up after the first couple of chapters, it was too - well, wordy - far too much descriptive stuff of things of no consequence. Verbal diarrhoea!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean - I often find books people rave about by celebs are a let down. The first might be OK but then I go off them
DeleteThey both sound like good reads, I'll look out for them on the charity book table. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou might have to wait a while!
DeleteI read a novel written by Robert Peston's first wife, he completed and published it after her death, I did have a copy but think I have have given it to a charity shop. I must look out for his novel at the library, also the Kate Webb one, I've read one of hers and enjoyed it so must look for others:)
ReplyDeleteI investigated for more info and found Sian Busby - A Commonplace killing.- sounds interesting. I shall reserve at library as soon as I can. I have too many on order at the moment and they have a limit
DeleteTwo good review - something to follow up.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both - I rarely finish anything I haven't enjoyed!
DeleteI checked my library website and they don't have these authors. Too bad for me. I have a good pile to read right now so I will be okay. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's annoying - sorry!
DeleteThese both sound very good and I'm familiar with neither of the authors. Thanks for the recommendation, Sue.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteThose both sound very good. I am going to check and see if we can get those authors here in Canada.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Interesting books. I need to read the books that I already have. One I bought last year at Christian convention sounded good as the man who talked at the convention said he had books and cheaper to buy than online. "Following Jesus in a Politically divided world" by John Whittaker and Daniel McCoy. Appendix 1 has scriptures in the book of Matthew in the Bible. I'm nearly finished from another book I have. Enjoy reading your books!
