A Jolly Jumble Sale

It was quite a treat to find there was a jumble sale happening not too far away, they are such a rare occurrence nowadays. Had to go and have a look and so did about 30 other people..........most were ahead of me in the queue!

Just a few treasures
The Chicken cupboard holds 12 eggs and was £1 - that will make a bit more space in our fridge. The Candle-stick was 20p - for my spring mantle piece (just need a green or yellow candle). The pretty china trio were 60p. The little cat book by Doris Lessing  was 10p, I shall pass that to a friend for Christmas and I paid 50p for the very large book (originally £30!) ......Clive Aslett - Villages of Britain; The 500 Villages That Made the Countryside. Now if ever there was any truth in the saying "never judge a book by it's cover" this book proves it. The cover is intriguing  .............farmers harvesting with scythes, horse and cart, haystacks, the manor house with pigs in a sty,  But the villages featured are chosen simply for a story of something that happened there, usually something that hit the headlines of local newspapers, but I can't really see how a murder from the 1800's "Made the Countryside"? Nothing much in the book about the actual village. Anyway, I shall have a look through and pop it in the book box under the stairs ready for the next car-boot sale we do.

I'll keep a look out for more Jumbles during the Autumn, now we are in the middle of Suffolk rather than on the edge, there ought to be more to go to.

Back Tomorrow

  1. The scouts hold a regular jumble sale near us but the last time I went you could hardly get in to it. So many people pushing and shoving it was awful. I hadn't been for a few years and it never used to be like that. It out me off going again. There didn't seem to be the locals that used to go.

  2. I love the little egg 'safe', Sue, and the china trio. What a shame the Clive Aslet book is a bit of a let-down. I totally agree that having been the scene of a murder doesn't say anything about how that particular village made the countryside. Yes, one for the next jumble sale, perhaps.

  6. Jumble sales are a rare breed in my corner of the Surrey Hills - they seem to have been taken over by car boot sales.

  7. I can't remember the last time I even saw an advert for a jumble sale. They are obviously not as popular as they once were.

  10. I've not been to a jumble sale since I was a little girl when my Mother used to send me looking for coats for us all for Winter and summer dresses for the summer for playing out in.
She was to embarrassed to go so I got the job and hated it. Now though I would love it and yet never see one advertised.

  12. You are quite correct, there are not many Jumbles nowadays. Years ago when the kids were young I used to go to Jumbles every Saturday. I wish I'd kept a lot of the stuff I bought then it would be worth a lot now.
    I love the egg cage.

  13. Books are a weakness for me. I am trying not to bring in more things to find places for. Seems if I move one thing, it upsets the apple cart.
