The Co-op guide to dating
Dear Susan,

We are trying to reduce our waste and keep as much food in the food chain as possible.
We have decided to start selling food past the Best Before date to help reduce the
levels of waste that our stores have.

Well Done Co-op! And our local one is included in the list of stores where they will be trialing this offer - Good News indeed. and I have no idea why this is like this in a column.Must be something to do with the email I copied over.Odd.Back Soon Sue

  1. that's good. I doubt ours will be doing that, for a start they never have any of the special offers they show in adverts, and have just had a refit to make it look a bit fancy. They'll no doubt be keeping everything full price! But it is a great idea. x

    1. There was a list link to the email, not sure if any were in Ipswich but Debenham was on the list although we rarely go that way for anything

  2. Innovative layout Sue! I can just about remember my Mum collecting Coop stamps in the late 50s.

    1. I can remember my mum's Co-op number 4524! No idea of mine as we have a card so don't have to remember it. Rarely use a coop now except for their locally produced meat which is always good quality

  3. Was it a reading test, I think I passed.

  4. We waste far too much food because of rediculous sell by dates. Lots of processed food has so many additives it would be fresh for ever! Well done the co-op.

  5. All our Co-ops have recently turned into McColls. Don't really go in very often and I've not been in at all since the change over so not sure how much it's actually changed, but there was always some good fruit and bread offers on. xx

  6. Excellent! My Mum often pops into her local Salvation Army café and they sometimes have fruit and veg past its sell by date donated by the nearby Tesco. What they can't use in the café they give away. Everything she has been given has been perfectly good and some cabbages lasted for weeks after they were no longer 'fit for sale'!

  7. Anybody under the age of 40 or maybe even 50 only judges the fitness of food by sell by/use by dates. I use my nose as taught to me by my mother. I have seen much food and milk thrown away because of dates alone in work kitchens where people go to the local supermarkets for lunch things and spend more money than I would spend for an evening meal at home. It was only people like me of 60+ who still took a packed lunch, usually sandwiches as far as I was concerned, and a thermos flask.

    1. We usually take a flask etc even is we are just going to hospital as we never know how long we'll be stuck there, saves a few £

    2. When I go out on my day trips I always pack my lunch, same as I did for work.

  8. Good idea of the Co-op - some of this dating thing is rubbish.

  10. Even when past the best before date food is still edible, certainly not bad or off, just not the best! Having said that, I got some marked down liver the other day, still before the best before date but definitely off (I ate some - yew!)

  11. All shops should have to do this, there is so much waste. I bet you'll be down there, I would be.
