"In Time For Christmas"?

Are you ordering a new sofa or dining table now so that it can be delivered "In time for Christmas"?
No? neither am I!
So who does? someone must, otherwise they wouldn't use that as a tag line for their ads. Christmas is the most expensive time of year for most people but there must be folk who are adding to their debt by buying a sofa on credit.
Ho Hum.

  1. Hello. There can be some great sales during this time of year. And, if you need a big ticket item there are many sales offering zero percent interest. But, of course the person needs to be diligent to pay off the balance in full before the expiration date of the offer. I'm always on the lookout for a great deal if I need something. I recently did a post about saving money. Have a great day! Pat

    1. Yes you are right. 0% interest is good for some people

  2. That seems an unusually mean spirited post from you. Some people plan for big ticket items. If I needed a new sofa and had company coming over Christmas, it would be important to me to know whether delivery was Dec 23 or Jan 4.

Hope all is well with you.

    1. Yes thank you I am fine and always forget that people take everything so seriously on a blog!

    2. Agree on the mean spirited bit. Not everyone will be 'adding to their debt by buying a sofa on credit' - some people budget for new furniture or save up for it. Very judgy post, don't like the undertone.

    3. Ah, but you see I am mean spirited, judgemental, nasty, cruel and generally not a nice person. So there! and I didn't say everyone anyway.

    4. Thank you Louise :-)
I also forgot to say that I'm extremely childish and tend not to take myself very seriously!

    5. Oh, I have just read this thread, as I agree with you that makes me mean spirited etc etc Lord Love a Duck surely those adverts get up everyone's nose. There that's me being judgemental. If i bought new furniture because friends and family were coming they would think I had lost my marbles.

    6. Yay Sue! Mean spirited? You? It's not April 1st, is it? You are the least mean-spirited person in blog land, dear girl!
I'm with you on those adverts. What they are trying to do is make us appraise our current furniture and make us think it's just not up to it! They want us to shell out mega bucks on new items for all our relliss and friends, their children and dogs, plus Uncle Tom Cobley and all, to come and scramble all over brand new ones which have been delivered in time for Christmas, of course; to spill wine over them and crunch crisps into them, smear them with mince pies and dips, and make a real mess of our brand new furniture! Yes, those adverts get right up my nose, too. But since I have control of the remote most of the time, if we're watching ITV or Channel 4, I hit the MUTE as soon as adverts come on. They are sooooo irritating! But they needn't be. I use advert time to make tea, visit the loo, put out our glasses of night-time water, etc. We can use advertising time profitably in this way, i.e. taking no notice of them and doing something other than watching them, ha ha!

    1. Brilliant news on the house, hope the cooker arrives in time for Christmas! :-)

  4. It's all a sales trick, tell people anything is limited, so they don't have time to think about it, and someone will react and buy, even on big priced items.

  5. some people do. And if they need one and there is a good offer, then good for them.
I can't say I've ever got new furniture in 'just' for Christmas though. We either need it or we don't!

  6. We needed a sofa delivered "by Christmas" when we first got married and moved into an Army Quarter and opted for unfurnished thinking we could pop into a furniture store, choose a sofa and have it delivered the next day! How naive were we?! Spent Christmas sitting on cushions on the floor - thank goodness we had chosen to spend our first married Christmas alone! Could have been embarrassing.

  7. We had to buy a bigger table a few years ago around Christmas as the family expanded and I got fed up of adding on the fold-up wallpapering table as a table extension - but it was for life - not just for Christmas!

    1. One year when we had extended family round we put the children round a small table out in the hall. They loved it!

  8. I think people like to decorate for the holidays and often have more visitors during this time of year. My SIL renovates homes with kitchens and bathrooms being his specialty, and his busiest times are from September to December. I don’t need a couch, but do need to buy a new mattress for guests staying over. I have been hearing complaints about the one I have.

    1. We solved a spare room hard-bed problem with a mattress topper, saved on getting a new mattress

    2. You can save a hard mattress issue with a mattress topper, but you can’t solve an old mattress issue with a topper. But good for you on saving on a new mattress!

  9. Oh dear Sue, you seem to have stirred a hornets nest. I have to state that I am in the same mind as you. IF I did need a new sofa or other large furniture item I would be keeping my eye on the sales, lots of them start on boxing day. BUT I wouldn't want it for Christmas, chocolatey fingers, warm mince pies oozing brandy butter, flaky pastry off hot sausage rolls. I don't think so.

    1. All good Fun!
I would be worried that if I got rid of an old sofa the new one wouldn't turn up in time! Not that we buy new if we can avoid it anyway!

  10. I totally agree with you Sue. I would hate the fuss of trying to make up my mind about furniture just before Christmas. My grand children prefer sitting under the table anyway but that's another story and as light hearted a comment as I think yours was meant to be. Sue

  11. If I was buying a new sofa I would do so AFTER Christmas when it was less likely to get spoiled. I never understand the 'get it I. Time for Christmas' push for anything. There is quite enough to do at this time of year and I would rather shop at a more relaxed time. It's not as if the "sale" only occurs at Christmas as time. From the adverts I see, it seems they are on all year round.

  12. Nope, no new furniture for Christmas. Trying to hold off on any new furniture while we still have the cat.

  13. Actually I do want to buy a wing chair, but that Xmas tag is putting me off to after the holiday, when there is the interminable 'sales' items, especially Oak Furniture.
What puzzles me, if hundreds ordered sofas to arrive on due date, how do they make them all?

  14. We had new sofas last year, delivered mid Dec - BUT we'd been looking for some we liked the look of/ were the right size/ the right colour/ were comfortable for over a year - so the timing was just a coincidence - a happy one, for us :)

Other than that (and the one time we moved house at the very end of Oct and desperately wanted anew sofa bed (for our new (as in never had before) second living room and also had guests staying over Xmas (so the sofa bed would be very handy!) we struggled to get a delivery before Xmas - they offered us one half day (morning) slot in late Nov and that was it. As my husband was working away and I was working in a school and they refused to tie it down to a smaller window/ contact me when close to our house (the school being less than a mile from our home) we were stumped! The 'guaranteed delivery before Xmas' clearly meant only this 4.5 hour period several weeks before Xmas day was our only chance..... ridiculous! :D

  15. We need a new sofa - so we have decided to give ours a "holiday rest" and elected to go and sit on someone else's for Christmas!

  16. My 'new' sofa arrived on Saturday - in the back of my car. It was new to me, but several years old, immaculate and carefully looked after by an elderly lady who was down-sizing from her beautiful apartment overlooking the north coast of Cornwall. She had made beautiful fitted covers for it - and it cost me all of £30. I collected it with my daughter-in-law to help lift it into the back of my car, so no worries about it being delivered.
I look at those repetitive adverts and laugh!
