So Many Aubergines

I've never had so many aubergines, even when I grew 10 plants in the poly-tunnel at the smallholding when I was growing to sell.
Last year I had 3 plants in pots in the greenhouse and got about 3 aubergines so this year I grew more................ and with this heat 5 plants in pots have produced about 30 aubergines, all sizes and still growing.
I've given some away, I've made 10 portions of aubergine and tomato sauce for pasta to put in the freezer, I'll give more away.
But what's the betting that if I only grow a couple of plants next year, it will be cold and gloomy and I'll get 2 aubergines.

And talking about cold and gloomy, what a different day yesterday was here in Suffolk, a gloomy 17℃ according to my phone and lots of steady rain. What a drastic change compared to the last couple of months. I prefer a bit warmer than 17, although over 30℃ was a bit much.
I got started on sanding down the bedroom in preparation for decorating.......it's going to be a long job and at the moment I'd rather be watching the European Championships on TV. A good idea to put all the different sports' European competitions together to make a big event. The things some people do for sport always amazes me - the open water swimming for miles in Loch Lomond -Brrrrrr and diving off that high board - crazy, and as for the triathlon............who on earth had the idea to put three sports together just for fun!

Many thanks for comments yesterday and hello and welcome to new followers, almost back to the 420 on my old blog.

Back Tomorrow

  1. We've not had much success with aubergines in previous years either, so this year thought we'd have just the one, as it didn't seem worth the bother taking up greenhouse space for more if they just didn't fruit. The one plant has several fruits on it....sod's law!

  2. I'm not terribly fond of aubergines so have never grown them but maybe home grown are a lot nicer.
It's obviously a very good year for them, judging by Sooze's comment as well as yours.

  3. We are having the best crop of peppers this year, another plant which is enjoying the hot weather.

  4. Sod’s law with the aubergines...... have you tried drying them and freezing for mouskka and parm? I love them also in oil for anti pasta. Emma

  5. I enjoy aubergines very much, but have never grown them (never grown anything at all I have to admit). We usually eat 2 or 3 of these purple vegetables a week.
Love the European Championships on tv as well, it's a good idee to put them all together.

  6. I have plenty of courgettes in my gro bags and my runner beans will be ready to start pulling in about a week. Haven't found all the watering easy though.

  7. We don't really eat aubergines but I had a go at growing them one year and got zilch. I don't like to be beaten so tried again the following year and still nothing. It took me three attempts to get a few aubergines but once I'd done it I didn't bother again, I just didn't want to give up until I'd done it.

  8. Wishing we could have a 17C day. It has been months since we were below 22C even at night. At least it made tackling your room an easier affair. Impossible in the heat.

  9. Aubergines are quite versatile I find, sliced thinly I use them in place of pasta for lasagna or roasted with garlic. Its lovely when you can grow and pick your own xcx

  10. I didn't sow any Aubergine seeds this year after a dismal failure last year ... perhaps looking at your amazing success I should have given it another go.

What I have got is marrows everywhere ... and I didn't sow a single marrow seed! My courgettes have been determined to swell to enormous sizes in the blink of an eye, I think we only ate about three actual 'courgette sized' ones. I tried to tempt John Gray with a marrow yesterday, he took one look at the size of them and backed hastily away ;-)

  11. Having a bumper year for aubergines here too. For some reason they all germinated at the outset and the warm conditions this summer has been ideal for them.

  12. Aubergine glut here too - not that it's a problem, more of a surprise in Scotland lol. 19 on two plants at various stages; have made a big pot of vegetable curry for Bothy night tonight - includes lots of aubergine :)
I reckon it's the really hot weather that they loved - all I produced in Dorset in 27 years was one tiny bonsai aubergine which then fell off the plant. I've also been eating homegrown melons :)

  13. I am so jealous!!! I have no luck growing aubergines (eggplant here in US). I always lose them to flea beetles. I have used row covers with no success. I have been buying them at the supermarket as they are one of my favorite veggies.

  14. Not getting far with ours. Lent husband one of my best paintbrushes and told him to go and fertilize them by hand.

  15. I have too many vegetables and not enough friends at home (everyone is traveling) to take some of my garden’s bounty. The heat and rain we have been having here has been hard on our bodies but the veggies loved it. I have grown auberbines (eggplants) and know that one plant is more than enough. You can’t give them away because everybody else has the same problem.

  16. Congrats on your bumper crop.. we call them eggplant! LOL! I like the name aubergine better. I'd love to see a photo of your bounty. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  17. I couldn't find any eggplant starters here, so I won't be able to make and freeze eggplant this year. Next year I am going to start some inside.

    God bless.
