Bauble Wreath - Fail.

Last Christmas we didn't celebrate very much as Col had only just came out of hospital after his donor stem cell transplant. He wasn't well at all. But I did have a plan to make a bauble wreath for the door and at a charity shop I bought a bag of baubles. They didn't get turned into a wreath, they got shoved in the Christmas box in the cupboard under the stairs. It was only when I saw several people selling Christmas decorations at the car boot sales that I remembered my plan.

I had a peruse of u-tube to check how to make one and  fished out the box from under the stairs to see just what baubles I actually had, seems they are mostly red apart from the bag from the charity shop which were blues and silvers.

Found a good piece of wire and started threading them on but half of them didn't have a big enough hole to thread the wire through and after threading about 20 I realised I would need dozens more, as what I had didn't go very far round a circle.
Don't want to buy dozens more.
Gave up and un-threaded them all. Put lots into a bag to go back to a charity shop!
Fail.
I'm not bothered, more time for reading!

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I like the idea of a homemade wreath for the door, 2 or 3 times I've tried making one but it's never worked out, for one reason or another. So I won't bother anymore either!

    1. I used to make one with fresh greenery on a wire netting base. But living here it seems a bit pointless as the only person who would see it is the postman!

  2. Oh no! At least you gave it a try. I wouldn't know where to start. X

  3. Many years ago I got a fake wreath, made to look like pine, it had no decorations. Every few years I update it before hanging it, it will probably out live me.

  4. I make a home-made wreath each year - just twisted willow (cut from one of our trees), and then whatever woodland greenery I can find - good twistings of ivy leaves, some ivy berries, holly berries, some jingle bells which I have in my stash, coloured ribbon to finish it off. Part of the Christmas magic. Sorry yours didn't go to plan, but at least you tried.

  5. Such a shame, I tried to make one using a cardboard base, but the hot glue gun kept melting them so mine failed also. A rag wreath is a much easier option.

  6. I'm making a fabric one - three long tubes, stuffed and plaited. Perhaps a bit impractical but my porch is sheltered so it should be OK (fingers crossed). If not, I will hang it up at a window instead.
I've seen those bauble wreaths and they do look nice so it's a shame yours didn't work out. I never thought of the holes being too small.
Could you thread them on strong twine and have a sort of loop rather than a circle with a nice bow at the top? It could be the size you can manage with what you've got.

  7. I just put my baubles (that sounds like a VERY Benny Hill sentence for some reason!) piled up pyramid style on a fruit dish on my coffee table. Put some unshelled nuts in too (more BH!), few sprigs of holly leaves (fake) and it looks lovely, especially when the lights are on. It's the one ornament that's impossible to stop the tiddlies from going for for some reason. Known in my family as 'the pretties' which is what youngest one used to call it.

  8. I also tried this, Sue, uusing several different methods but went back to filling nice glass jars with them to create a display. Not a fail, but a creative opportunity that wasn’t to your taste. My DD and I did a golf ball one on an MDF wreath with a glue gun last year. It took about 60 golf balls and has to sit on an easel because it’s so heavy! SIL loved it so that’s a winner.

  10. Could you have a wreath filled all round with some foliage or holly and just arrange a cluster of baubles placed decoratively around the bottom of the circle coming part way up the sides? I can see it in my mind but can't explain it!!
This is a link for an ideal home one

and this for one where the wreath has only partial decoration but the dried fruit could be baubles instead

I rather suspect though that you will want to just get them to a charity shop and have done and try another idea. Have a nice day - raining here!

    1. They went off to a charity shop PDQ except for a few just in case I get the inclination to unfold the Christmas tree which I really ought to do as I have all family here for Christmas day.

  11. I bought a big bag of baubles from a car boot sale for £1. I am now adding them to the hedges in the garden. Looks very pretty. I can see them from my window. Maybe you could try that.

  12. Oh such a shame your project didn´t work for you. I made one made from pom poms and polystyrene wreath, maybe you could try that xcx

  13. I always make one with greenery from the garden, but two years ago I fancied a change and made a very blingy tinsel wreath, wrapped with fairy lights. It lasted two days before my husband announced it had 'accidentally' fallen down and he'd put it in the garage for 'safe-keeping'. So it was back to the greenery last year!

  14. I've been making and selling bauble wreaths for about 5 or 6 years. I use a Styrofoam wreath and a glue gun. I use about 100 baubles from large orange size down to grape size and put battery operated fairy lights on them.

  15. Sounds like a happy ending to me! Someone will want those baubles to round out THEIR wreath :)

  16. We are planning on being in our 5th wheel (travel trailer) over the holidays. When going through some things I found a small tree that I've had for years - think table top size and a lot of lovely small ornaments. I packed that along with a few decorations, some fake greenery and some holiday napkins. You've put me in mind of making a wreath - I have a HUGE one that a woman who worked for me years ago made as a gift. She is very talented and it fit when we lived in a big house with a two story living room. Now it is just too big. I think I'll look at the thrift shops for a small fake wreath and decorate it for the trailer. We haven't been able to put up a tree for several years due to over attentive cats. I collected ornaments when I traveled and I really don't want to have them damaged.

  17. I was in Sainsburys yesterday and picked up a Christmas craft magazine to have a look through (no way I was buying it at £4.99!!). They had a really nice simple 'wreath' idea: an old round picture frame, spray painted gold and then 5 or 7 (odd numbers anyway, all dependent on the size of the frame) of red and green ribbons, different lengths, with a single Christmas ornament attached to end of each piece of ribbon. It looked lovely and it was suggested to place it against a mirror for double effect.

  18. I always make one from green stuff lying around ie ivy, holly etc, add a big red ribbon, then tie it to the gate. I am very strict about taking it down on 12th Night - my French neighbours take theirs down much later - the chap opposite still has a bit of tinsel stuck on his window!
