1 Week Eating Local Part 6

Just a short post today, thanks for all comments about eating local food. It's interesting to hear what people in other parts of the country can find locally.

Toast and honey and local apples eaten again and home made bread. I've run out of the butter - sadly so have to use my normal, which is British but not local - a fail, but I really can't spend over £3 on butter as a regular purchase.

I used the last little bit of the Suffolk Gold cheese from the beginning of the week to do cheese on toast for lunch with two very small tomatoes - all that's left on the one remaining tomato plant in the greenhouse (apart from a few green ones which I must bring in before it's too late)


The Co-op Sausages served up with another tub of my own roast veg from the freezer.
Forgot a photo again! Duh!

Then I had the rest of the baked egg custard and a bit more stewed apple.

  1. ALl challenges should be tempered with a little common sense and I totally agree about the butter - over three pounds is rather expensive!
    How lovely to till have a few tomatoes from the greenhouse. Are they still as tasty?

    1. No - pretty tasteless - but the right colour. Just green left now, indoors for ripening unless they wrinkle first

  2. In Norfolk we also have the locally caught fish and Norfolk crabs which are easy to buy in Norwich and cheap. You have made me feel quite saintly as I clearly do eat a lot of local food without even thinking about it.

    1. Probably the only local fish would be from the beach fishing huts at Aldeburgh and priced for the second home owners!

  3. You're lucky to still have tomatoes - ours didn't do very well at all this year, because of the weather I expect. We did have a lot very late in the season, but loads more didn't ripen, and went wrinkly in storage in our cold utility room. I do have several tubs of pasta sauce made with the red ones in the freezer.

    1. Most of my tomatoes finished weeks ago and I cleared out of the greenhouse all but one plant which just had a few left, the rest are tiny and indoors to see if they'll turn red or just turn wrinkly

  4. As diddy as that cheese looks on your plate, I bet once grated up and topped with the tomatoes it made a lovely lunch. Fresh and very local, you can't beat it can you.

    1. There was no point in costing it as everything is around double the price of supermarkets, plus I've got lots left anyway

  6. Good for you. I would find it very difficult to eat anything at all that would be considered "local" right now. It is mid winter (or at least the start of winter) here.

    1. Any later in the year and all my own produce would have been finished. Maybe I could do it again next summer when I have plenty of my own stuff

  7. I have been following this challenge with interest, but it's only today that it dawned on me that the only local produce I can buy is honey, pork and yogurt! Hardly an adequate diet, add to that the fact that the nearest abattoir is 50 miles away means that even the locally produced pork has some hefty food miles attached to it. There are only 2 market gardens in the whole of Greater Manchester so I am highly unlikely to see local veg even in early autumn.

    1. It's frightening to think how little is produced close to where people actually live. Back in time even cities would have had farms.
      Luckily for local pork producers a new replacement abattoir opened on an industrial estate in Mid Suffolk about 8 - 10 years ago but they only deal with larger producers so if we were still keeping a pig or two I don't know where they would have to go.

  8. Baked egg custard...yummy - not had that for a very long time. I think you are doing really well with this challenge.

  10. We surprisingly found a dozen strawberries on our plants this week, although they weren't that good when we came to eat them. We do grow them in the greenhouse though so perhaps they had some sunshine while we were away.
