Around Joe's Lane and Back Down the Road

Sunday was so gloomy and grey indoors and out, so after making the Cattern cakes, mixing the Christmas pudding and getting the breadmaker to make me a loaf of bread I thought I'd better get some exercise in the damp daylight.

The farmer hasn't used his quad bike yet to put the line of the footpath back across the field which is very muddy. You can just about see where a few people have walked across, but I decided to go round the edge.

Looks like a deer .....probably a Muntjac went the same way

Then along Joe's Road and I've no idea who Joe was

Onto the proper road and I passed the hard standing which was full of sugar beet two weeks ago

All that's left is a big heap of soil which fell off the beet when it was loaded, I expect it will get shifted sometime

This barn was up for sale a while back for conversion to a house, but nothing has happened yet

Someone's been round with a can of yellow spray marking the pot holes and these kerb-stones that need repairing because they've been pushed away from the road edge, so I guess we'll have a road closed sign sometime while they do the work.

The brown signs are the Heart of Suffolk cycle route- about 50 miles round Mid-Suffolk, and the green sticker is for the new Hakluyt 6 mile cycle ride round the different parts of the village

Between this photo and the one below I talked to Simon and Andrea who pulled up in their car beside me to say hello, they live in a house on the road opposite the end of the lane and then to Ruth who lives in the house beside the post box, she was gardening out the front of her house. They were the only people I talked to all day so it was a good thing I went out.
And the postbox at the end of my lane has been painted - a rare occurrence.

Bright red and easier to see now

Then I went up the lane and home to light the fire.

The electric is off here all day today......a planned outage while they do repairs somewhere nearby. Think I will be lighting the fire much earlier than usual.
(edited  in at 8.30 - just had a text message to say electric outage has been cancelled for today - bother - I shall have to do the hoovering after all!)

Back Tomorrow

  1. Morning Sue, your roads (well, lanes) look much like ours - narrow and muddy! The verges on our lanes have really been flattened by the farm vehicles lately, there's been so much mud and water it's been impossible to see the verges. The farmers are pretty good about clearing up the lanes after they've made a mess, once they've finished work in the fields.

    1. The trucks and tractors have squashed lots of the verges onto the road = my car is filthy again

  2. Your walk looks like my walks around here. I am just waiting for the septic tank man to come, fingers crossed. He rang last night to say his back is better so I have had to cancel all I was doing today as tank takes priority. I have got the cats all shut in one room and they are not very pleased.

  3. Was the barn expensive? You can't beat a good walk. Great photos, especially the red post box.

    1. I can't remember how much the barn was - it's got land at the back too

  4. That's a nice walk out and I presume dry for itsduration. We've woken up to drizzle or worse everyday recently. Fed up with it and the low light levels.

I plan to get out for a walk today, rain or no rain, as I have put on 3 lbs . . .

    1. It was dry luckily, just about a mile so not far - doesn't use many calories - and no hills

  5. Gosh you really do live out in the country! That walk looks like a real treat to do, i'd love to be able to get out somewhere like that - if i had a warm place to come home to! I'd probably be wanting a dog as well for the company.. oh well i can but dream...

    1. It's a problem crossing the field if it's muddy but at the moment there's enough room to get round the edge of the field - until the hedges and brambles grow

  6. Sometimes you just have to get out whatever the weather. Great you stopped to speak to people, they might have only seen you all day too!

    1. Always good to speak to neighbours......... because we all have to drive everywhere it's unusual to see anyone

  7. A good but muddy walk, this time of year is so gloomy when it's damp and miserable isn't it.

If you have a bit of frost that lovely glossy red post box will make a lovely header photo. Did you use it once before as a header … or am I thinking of someone else?

    1. I'm waiting for a bit of sunshine then the postbox will be the header again and yes I did use it when we first moved here

  8. That bright red post box is gorgeous. Here ours are rather squat boxy affairs.

Lovely walk and the scenery (even the muddy parts) is gorgeous.

    God bless.

    1. It's a very old letter box and only takes small letters and I'm surprised Royal Mail haven't removed it. I often have to bike to the next letter box which is a bit bigger.

  9. I feel for you in all your mud and dark, but have to say I am enjoying summer arriving here with its blue skies and warm sunshine. It is good that you met people - a couple of days not talking to anyone and it is so easy to begin feeling a bit depressed. Mxx

    1. Summer seems a very long way away here with another dull day today

  10. Looks like a nice walk even if it was a bit muddy. Here, it's been snowing since last night. Apart from people shoveling snow I've only seen one dog walker.

  11. Just the kind of walk I like on a day like today Sue - one where I don't have to move out of my chair.

  12. Lovely walk, even in rainy weather.

Couldn't you have "made believe" that you didn't know about the electricity, and not done the hoovering?????? >,-)

  13. I would love some lanes like that near by. You just reminded me I need to get the vacuum out before I get totally relaxed.
