1st December - Advent Photos 2020

A Blogland tradition means that usually my  December posts are photographs of Christmassy things. If you want to see previous years. 2017 photos are HERE, 2018 photos are HERE ,  and 2019 posts are HERE,

This year for a change I thought  that each day would be a Christmas book from my shelves.  It was while sorting through books for ziffit that I realised I had several Christmas books both fiction and non-fiction, collected over many years and the all the fiction un-read.

Some are Ladybird books from when my children were young, some I had when I was a Cub Scout leader and needed ideas for the Christmas carol service, others picked up second-hand from charity shops over the years and a couple are more recent - second-hand from amazon or presents from my wish list.
I started to read all the fiction at the end of November and will be passing some on to any blog reader who wants one...........(more about that in a few days)

So Back Tomorrow with the first  book but meanwhile Christmas is on the mantel-shelf. (although it will all have to come off again when the chimney sweep comes in the week before Christmas!).

Getting back to a sort of normal.............there was confirmation on the library website that the mobiles will be up and running again this week so I will be getting a lovely load of reservations just a few days before Christmas and the swimming pool is opening tomorrow and I'll be there - hope they've got it up to the right  temperature!

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. There's one missing. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

    1. I had a copy once but the classics all went before moving to Ipswich and anyway it's not something I'd ever want to actually read as there's been enough versions on TV

  2. What a lovely, cheery mantlepiece! Lots to look forward to in the coming weeks including swimming - I never go swimming these days so why does it sound so enticing now? (Forbidden pleasures for us in tier 3, I suppose?) Vicki

  3. We have a mantel shelf in the house we are (hope to be!) moving to. I look forward to some seasonal dressing of it in due course. Yours looks lovely Sue - the only Christmassy things I have a purely practical - a cake stand and a gravy boat. Lucy over at Attic24 goes to town with her mantel shelf - love it! I get my colour fix from there in the depths of winter!

Love your header, by the way. I have just gotten rid of my Christmas cookbooks and magazines, having hardened my heart - in fact, half of my cookery books are now in boxes to go to the Salvation Army.

    1. I'm moving to a new home with NO mantelpiece. In every other way it's practically perfect, but I haven't resolved the "where will I put...?" questions yet

    2. Angela - you will have to have SHELVES instead! We said ours could go with the house, BUT am now wondering if they actually "need" the one over the bay window in the kitchen. Trouble is, the buyer is so incredibly particular we would have to ask if we could take it now. We have one out in the shed, but it will need a repaint.

  5. What a lovely idea, Sue, especially as all your readers thoroughly enjoy your book posts, judging by the amount of comments they always receive. I shall forward to them with relish! I always enjoy your blog.

    1. The mantelpiece looks better in real life - the photo makes everything more spread out than they actually are,
      Have fun doing your decorations

  8. Hello Sue

Although I don't comment, I do still read your blog and wanted to wish you well with your house move. It is very exciting for you and I hope that it goes well and that you will be very happy in your new home, wherever that turns out to be. I see that you are considering the future of some of your books and remember that you said recently you had a full set of Miss Read books you wanted to find a home for. I collect Miss Read books and would love to buy them from you if you could let them go at a suitable price, but I have no idea how to get hold of you to discuss or if you still have them. If you are interested, perhaps you could leave a reply so that we can get in touch in some way as I don't want to leave my e-mail address in a comment that will be published. Thank you and again, I wish you all the best with the future which I will enjoy reading about! Happy christmas, Amy xx

  12. Our normality is still 'the new normal' as we have been released from lockdown #2 the softer version straight into tier 3 .... *yay* sigh. Your mantle piece is probably the first festive photo that has actually made me go ... aaaah - lovely .... and think about getting the decorations out (not up!). My son who is waiting on his 'get-out-of-uni-cv19-test-results' should be home by the end of the week and he wants to help with the tree and decorating. x

    1. I keep thinking I oughtt to make an effort with the tree but it's such a faff to fit all the bits together

    1. I decided it was a good idea to actually read the Christmas crime fiction rather than just looking at them! and with the absence of library books I was very glad of them this year.
