April Fools Day

The first of April, some might say,
Is set apart for All Fool's Day,
But why people call it so'
Nor I nor they themselves do know
From Poor Richard's Almanack (1760)

One book I have says that perhaps 1st April became April Fool's Day because it was the last day of the festivities when the New Year began on 25th March or maybe it was a protest from moving the New Year.

(and some might say I was a fool even thinking about moving during a pandemic - they might be right!)

The Romans called this month Aprilis from the verb aperire (to open). The Anglo-Saxons named this month after a goddess - Eosturmonath, the month of Eostre, goddess of the dawn.

I've got the measurements for the two front bedroom windows which have curtain rails at the bungalow (My old ones had the rings in for poles and one set wasn't deep enough anyway so I left poles and curtains behind) so I'm going on an adventure to The Range today to see what I can find - They've been open compared to Dunelm who've had to stay closed.
While I'm out might as well go in the nearby Asda and get some bits for Easter - not that there is much planned but I should get to see the 3 Suffolk grandchildren at sometime........ not buying chocolate eggs though. They always get loads.
Perhaps then a KFC (which will send a shiver of horror through some people!) but at one a year I'm sure I'll survive.
(Still time to leave a comment for the Richard Osman Book giveaway. I'll sort it over the weekend)

Back Tomorrow

  1. My most scary shopping experience this year has been in The Range in February . So many people not wearing masks (I was in the store less than 10 minutes and counted at least 19) , very little social distancing. I felt really sorry for the staff. I went in for one item and straight out again, no browsing... But I did feel rather vulnerable.

    1. It wasn't too busy this morning, everyone seemed to be masked up and using the sanitiser on the way in. No curtains though

  2. Enjoy your trip to The Range one place I like, but it's well over a year now since I have been on a big store. Hope you see some nice curtains.

  3. To be honest, unless your local Range is a very good one I think I would wait for Dunelm to re-open. Moving during a pandemic is an experience for sure!!

We left all the curtains and poles etc for our buyers and lots more besides, whereas the house we bought has had everything stripped out ... there's not even a bloody lightbulb, so we are both starting from scratch.

There's nothing wrong with a KFC if you eat chicken. I used to love the Chicken Fillet Burger with chips every now and then, many years ago.

    1. Nothing in the Range today Much more choice on the Dunelm website and I was too early for a KFC - wasted morning all round!

  4. It never occurred to me that All Fools Day might be connected to the Gregorian/Julian calendar change. You have to be careful with dates if tracing family history back as far as 1751/52. Give us back our 11 days!

  6. I'm surprised more home shops haven't cottoned onto selling a limited range of food stuffs like the range, so they could stay open too... I find it a bit like home bargains, I either come out with loads, or nothing at all.

    1. The choice of curtains in the Range was hopeless and I didn't bother to look round

  7. I was going to say I hope you find some nice curtains, but I see from comments that you didn't. What a shame. It's only a couple of weeks until non-essential shops open, so maybe you'll find some then. I bought some M&S lined curtains for £5 from a charity shop a couple of years ago. They were enormous and I made 2 pairs out of them for my living room. A real bargain! xx

  8. I remember what a big thing April Fool's Day was when we were kids/ Seems to have more or less died out these days I think.

    1. Perhaps it hasn't for children. It had to be before 12 noon. That seems to have been forgotten.

    2. There was a good April 1st prank on The One Show - after 7pm - so much too late to count

  9. It snowed here yesterday, which was a cruel joke. The wind whipped and I stayed close to a warm fire, and made a nice casserole for supper to add heat to the kitchen. My cryptic puzzle was "To avoid fools, go into the dense forest and avoid looking into still pools." Someone named O'malley said that. Obviously a wise man.

  10. Love these posts! It's been freezing here the last couple of days. I think April decided to return to winter.
