Of Course I Found a Few Useful Things!

There were more people selling at Needham Market boot sale last Saturday than on many of the Saturdays last year. I went all round but considering the huge amount of 'stuff' I didn't find many things to come home with me. .

Barbie doll's clothes and the unusual find of a Barbie wheelchair can be ticked off the list. The plate is for the summer display on the bookshelves. (I searched for summer in the box while looking for spring and could only find the Summer Haze Lilliput Lane cottage). There is another Johnson Brothers cereal dish that I use everyday and two small cross stitch kits that can be made to be gifts.

The book is Laurie Lee's Village Christmas - I dithered about this as I'm sure it was borrowed from the library sometime in the last few years but couldn't remember reading it and it's not listed in my 'book of books read' so it's a good thing  it was brought home. Total of £5 spent on these.

There were so many plant stalls  I could have gone crazy! but restricted myself to a Saxifrage and a Red Cactus for the plant stand.

After the stand crashed over last week I moved it back into the corner but it doesn't get enough sun or light there - probably the reason two plants died over winter - I've now potted up the new plants into clay pots and moved it  further out on the patio but tied to the trellis. That should sort it.

I also bought a pot of 3 Hyacinths for standing on Col's Mum and Dad's grave. I took the Christmas wreath thing off several weeks ago. Col's sister has some faded plastic flowers there in the flower holder - which I think look a bit ugly! Might ask BiL to ask his sister if the plastic flowers can come off and I'll put something fresh on regularly now I'm only 3 miles away. I tucked the little wooden remembrance cross with Col's name on it by the headstone so it's a place to remember him now I've moved away from his birthday wood.

Back Tomorrow

    1. I guess I could take off some babies and push them in the ground in the front garden.

    2. Not too far away :) But as you said about Woolpit; far away enough to make me reconsider when I think about the petrol!

  2. What fantastic finds. The Barbie wheelchair dopes my heart good, it really does.
I'm sure you will enjoy the Laurie Lee - The reviews seem very good and I love the poetic nature of his books.

    1. The Barbie wheel chair was an interesting find, I shall pass it onto a granddaughter.
I must have borrowed the book and not read it but don't know why

  3. Real bargains there! Like Joy, I applaud Mattel's attempts to make Barbie more true to life, not just a long legged blonde "clothes horse".

  4. What bargains again Sue, I must try a boot sale again I haven't been to one for ages. I don't think I could restrain myself not to check out as many plant stands as I could!

  5. That was a good haul. The Laurie Lee book will be a lovely read. A friend of mine went on a post-Lockdown LL walk last year, during Gloucestershire's History Week. Envious? Moi? You bet.

I have a bowl planting of the green Sempervivums and a Pinky Red Saxifrage in the yard and the latter has been flowering since January.

Never knew there had been a wheelchair Barbie!

  8. Brilliant finds, as always! I've never seen a Barbie wheelchair either.
That's a lovely place to put Col's remembrance cross, Sue, being with his mum and dad is lovely.

  9. How nice to put the remembrance cross and hyacinths on the grave.

I am not able to go to often to my parents stone. The last time I went I left fresh flowers, and went back the next day to find they had been stolen.

    1. That is shocking, Jean. How could anyone steal flowers from a grave?

    2. People sometime think flowers have been stolen for the churchyard over the road from me - but it's the rabbits!

  10. Good finds at your sale this week! I am heading out on Saturday to a couple resale shops. My kitchen clock broke so I am on the lookout for that. I have started stocking up on toys for the grandkids also as I am taking your example of being ready with gifts for them! Thanks!

  11. All for 5 pounds! That's amazing. The red succulent plant looks like hens-and- chickens only mine is green. Mine grows in a large bowl sitting on the patio. The plant stand will be safe from any gust of wind. Adding new plants and seeing them thrive is always rewarding.

  12. That is a wonderful selection of finds! I really like the Lilliput Lane Cottage plate. I was a big Barbie fan as a child and would have enjoyed the wheel chair. Your granddaughter will like that and the clothes. Leaving the remembrance cross was a beautiful thing to do.

  13. Anything by Laurie Lee is well worth reading. I think Cider With Rosie was his literary Canon.

  14. I always enjoy seeing what you find at the flea market. That dainty floral plate looks so familair! I must have a piece, maybe a sugar bowl or my mom did. I was so touched that you left the remembrance cross where you can visit. My parents' resting place is unmarked and very far away. I d like to have a place to visit and bring flowers. [tho they'd think that was silly, I know.]

  15. What a great assortment! I want to go to a boot sale! I guess we have garage sales which are about the same thing but they never look appealing. My nephews' school used to have a wonderful yard sale in their gymnasium but it got canceled the last few years because of Covid.

It is a big tradition in Massachusetts to plant geraniums on family graves. Two years ago the only ones I could find were not in bloom so I bought petunias instead. My father is buried with his mother, aunt, grandparents and uncle, and every year we send pictures to his son (age 94) in Florida to prove we remembered (although my father had done this since 1959 so of course we were not going to forget after he was gone). That year my cousin called my mother to complain about the "skimpy" display, so last year I had to really overdo it. My mother is always sure the cemetery rips everything up the day after Memorial Day. I really like hyacinths but mine always fall over within a day or so of blooming. Why don't the horticulturalists breed a version with strong stems?

  16. What lovely buys! Good prices too. I miss shopping at charity shops. I'm trying to stay away from any kind of buying until I clear some of the things in my house and I am doing pretty well. As I go along I find it easier so I'm not going to tempt myself lol
