More checks have just started on food and plants coming in from the E.U. After carrying on with virtually free movement since Brexit, now trucks have to have more inspections.
I listened to The Food Programme on Radio 4 about this a while back. You might hear it HERE
There are surely going to be shortages and delays and definitely price increases.
One of the oddest things I heard was that omelettes sold in some of the big restaurant chains are imported ready made - What?

Omelets ready made, what ever next!
ReplyDeleteIt can't be true - surely
DeleteIf British people are buying ready-made omelettes from abroad then more fool them. Support Britain and buy British.
ReplyDeleteSeems a very strange thing to do
DeleteWe were just talking about this very thing at our Craft Group yesterday. The cost of food shopping is now scarily high if you are on a fixed income and you don’t know what to cut next. We take it in turns to bring biscuits for our coffee time at the group but I’m now worrying that some people might not be able to afford it. Catriona
ReplyDeleteAnd now making them is more expensive than buying
DeleteUnfortunately the majority of people did not know what they were voting for when they voted to leave the EU.
ReplyDeleteIt will sort itself out in time
DeleteThese are scary times!
ReplyDeleteand expensive
DeleteApparently 6 out of ten European vegetables are grown in polytunnels in Spain. Veg is still very cheap in the German discount stores. Better still people can grow their own.
ReplyDeleteI've seen on TV the size of those greenhouses and tunnels covering 100's of acres
DeleteTo be fair, we weren't given enough honest information about the 'cons' of leaving Brexit - plenty about the 'pros' but not the 'cons'.Many people decided that they preferred to be ruled from London, not from Brussels. Yet, having voted to leave, we seem to be even more under the rule of our Continental neighbours. "Confused" of Cornwall.
ReplyDeleteI disagree - there was plenty of information about the consequences of leaving the EU. The simplest one being that it would mean leaving the single market. All the cons were cleverly dismissed as “project fear” if you recall.
DeleteI've thankfully forgotten about hearing about Brexit - it went on far too long
DeleteYour expenses list a few weeks ago brought home how much the price of food has increased in the UK over the past year - 28% if I remember right. Now it will increase again. It is all well for politicians to tell us inflation is coming down, but it depends what you spend most on. If food is a bigger proportion of spending, inflation is much higher.
ReplyDeleteHeating is more expensive than food 0 no wonder some people haave to choose
DeletePerhaps so the eggs can't break in transit? But who on earth needs to be buying a ready made omelette for goodness sake???
ReplyDeleteEggs without shells come in in big tankers for the catering and manufacturing.
DeleteHard boiled and shelled eggs imported for the sandwich industry
It's all very odd
Ready made omelettes - good grief!
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Perhaps I mis-heard
DeleteSurely the omelets are not cooked, but rather raw eggs with added ingredients mixed in, in some kind of sealed carton, ready to pour into a hot pan. I can imagine those in a restaurant kitchen.
ReplyDeleteIt's all very odd
DeleteBritain's import controls on some food and drink and plant products.
ReplyDeleteEr Yes - that's what this very poor post is about
DeleteReady-made omelettes are in the same league as ready-cooked stuffed jacket potatoes.
ReplyDeleteThat's another strange idea
DeleteWill people actually buy a ready made omelette? They sound terrible and likely filled with preservatives. What next?
ReplyDeleteSounds very disgusting to me
DeleteIn the USA and in several countries I have visited in the last year people are complaining about the cost of food going significantly up. I do not think it can all be blamed on Brexit.
ReplyDeleteIt is t all the fault of Brexit, but Brexit certainly doesn’t help.
DeleteThat information about omelettes made me smile - sometimes it is quite "interesting" (horrifying?) to discover where a lot of our food actually does come from.
ReplyDeleteAlmost put off buying anything out of the house!
DeleteThe terrible weather so far this year is going to be making veggies and crops (so therefore flour and bread, e.g.) much more expensive, isn't it. A very good reason to grow our own veg, and stock up on flour before it goes much higher in price.
ReplyDeleteSome farms are well behind in getting things in the ground although this week here has been better
DeleteFood and fuel costs have risen astronomically here as well and no brexit for Australia!
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a world wide problem
DeleteI find that incredible that they have readymade omeletts.
ReplyDeleteIt is scary to think the price of food is going up here in the US it is awful!
cathy
Not easy cutting back when everything is going up all the time
DeleteI can believe the ready made omelettes. I had to go online and see if they are available here. I can buy a case of Eggland cheese omelettes (which is 5 boxes, each box containing 2 omelettes). Total 10 omelettes, price $89.99. Uh... I buy a box of 60 eggs for less than $6. They will last me for three months. 60 eggs make a lot of omelettes. People pay a great deal for 'convenience', don't they? I can only afford inconvenient!
ReplyDeleteThank you - I thought perhaps I'd misheard - but seems not!
Delete60 eggs for $6! I wonder what living conditions those chickens have.
DeleteReady made omelets... How very strange.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Dread to think what they taste like
DeleteEw, ready made omelets. If I knew they were ready made I wouldn't order them lol.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely true about the omelettes some time ago we were in a Little Chef and husband ordered an omelette but was told they were sold out but he could have fried eggs or scrambled, probably one of the reasons Little Chef are no more.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know why my comments are anonymous. Pam
ReplyDeleteSadly it doesn't surprise me at all. :-(
