What a Poor Year in the Greenhouse

Thank goodness the raspberries have been so good

Making up a little for the greenhouse veg where the flowers aren't setting on the aubergines, the tomatoes are spindly with few trusses of flowers and not many of those are setting either. The cucumbers that usually grow like crazy have stopped. Only two out of the four pepper plants have peppers.

Things don't look too bad from the doorway, but not so good close up.

It's typical that the year I decide not to squeeze too many plants in, I shall have a shortage.

Oh well, there's always next year

  1. You are not alone. Very few trusses on my tomatoes, just two mini cucumbers, and my aubergine plant died. I met the secretary of the village gardening club and asked what I was doing wrong. She said it was the weather.

  2. Greenhouse or not, this has been a strange year for you, sun wise, as I understand it.

  3. Not just you. Tomatoes are not too bad, but cucumbers have totally failed. I've tried three sowings, fresh seeds, different types of compost to start them off - useless. Normally the cucs are trained along the roof from end to end and I have to duck. Huh!!!

  4. Not a good year generally as the weather has been so strange.

  5. Yup, the first year I have a greenhouse and nothing wants to grow! I have a few tomatoes (but had to go in and pollinate them with a brush) and FINALLY, about 2 weeks ago, the cucumbers began to grow. Literally, in June they were still only a couple of inches high, but trying to put out flowers. Now I can start training them up, and have a couple of small fruits on them.

As for soft fruit - I couldn't go out much in June - pollen and looking after Keith - so everything is smothered in grass as high as my waist. I must put membrane down, and lots of muck for next year.

  6. P.S. You have that gorgeous stained glass window as your header - it is amazing.

  7. I follow a Scottish gardening vlog and he was saying the exact same things about his garden (even down to having a good crop of raspberries!). I've always observed there will be something that thrives and something that dies during each particular season's weather conditions. Thankfully, like you say, there is always next year! :)

  9. The weather has not been kind to the plants at all this year -our clematis that should flower in May didn’t and has a few gigantic flowers now but is dying from the bottom. Our golden rose has been and gone with all the blooms coming at once. I notice there is quite a lot of mouldy looking leaves on the petunias and some have just keeled over and died. Catriona

  10. I think a lot of gardeners all over the country are having the exact same problems, it's not been a good year for vegetables at all. I'm thinking that once I have cleared my freezer space out, I will be filling it back up with shop bought frozen vegetables before the prices shoot up.

  11. Our greenhouse is very dilapidated so I didn't grow anything in it this year, by the sounds of it I would have been disappointed if I had!

  12. So sorry, it's not funny is it? Hard work for nowt. As you say, the very year you don't overplant.

  13. From what I have heard, you have had a cool wet summer. A gardener's life rises and sets with the weather.

  14. A constantly wet garden here!
    Best ever year for rhubarb.
My 20 year old Virginia Creeper that covers the garage with its gorgeous red leaves just up and died though.

  15. That is disappointing when veg plants do not produce. This year seems particularly bad for many. I grow no veg due to wildlife that can destroy a garden in one night. My local farm stand seems to be in short supply as well.

  16. We have had great growth in the polytunnel this year. I piked and barrowed lots of fym and invested in a plastic rotating plastic sprinkler for four Euros and turn it on every morning to water the crops. The heat also helped to give great crops.

  17. Crappy garden year the new potatoes that usually yield multitudes seem to have produced 3 baking size potatoes each , tons of flowers on the runner beans and none have set on , onions lots of top growth but they havent swelled, all a bit strange except for tons of broad beans ive got nothing

  18. Very few raspberries here but I understand they usually produce on a two year cycle. Last year's crop was good. I've had a couple of zucchinis but no cucumbers yet and the tomatoes are all still stubbornly green!

  19. Oh how disappointing. Glad the raspberries did well

  20. This may not be consolation but anything you do there is better than just about anything I can grow. Nonetheless, it is disappointing. (I got 10 strawberries this year. So I feel you pain.)
