December 28th..... Colour and Rough Weather

When the sun shone on Boxing Day I took my camera for a tour around the garden

Dark red Cyclamen

Sunlight catching the Golden Feverfew

Winter Pansies

First Aconites
Even at the end of December there are little bits of colour here and there.

I do hope everyone got through the awful weather yesterday. We headed out from home just after 7am to get to Addenbrookes and it was already very wet. While we were sat in the waiting room waiting for blood test results it started to snow and by the time we were able to head home the roads in Cambridgeshire were nasty, slushy and slippery. We crossed back into Suffolk and there was a lot less snow and clearer roads except for big lakes of standing water. Very windy too, the dustbins were all over the garden. We were glad to get in and light the woodburner, because an hour and a half sat in a waiting room then slow journey home had quite worn Col out.

Tomorrow I must clear away my presents including the 6 books and 3 boxes of biscuits  - all shortbread- all very calorific!

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. It was nasty here and I stayed indoors, not needing to go out anywhere.

  2. It was fine here, no snow or even rain, just a bitterly cold wind that sliced right through you. Hope Col managed to warm up and feel more himself. 3 boxes of shortbread....yummy!

    1. We've had quite a lot of rain over the last few days, flooding right across the road in several places.

    1. If I hadn't been driving it would have looked lovely over in Cambridgshire - just rain here but nice again today

  4. I had shortbread too. Not something I would ever buy (or make) so will send those home with Tam, as her partner will enjoy them I'm sure.

Sorry you had a horrid journey to and from Addenbrookes. It came on to snow when we drove into town yesterday, but it's only laid on the mountains east of here (Brecon Beacons) and I think Pemb shad some too.

    1. I like shortbread - I like shortbread too much and it's probably the most fattening biscuit!

  5. It is better this morning, as I expect it also is in Suffolk, bright blue sky and sunshine, but very frosty. It is the opposite to yesterday and now too frosty for me to venture on the roads which were so wet and are now frozen. Maybe venture out later if the sun keeps shining. Enjoy today.x

    1. Yes complete opposite to yesterday we have a beautifully sun-shiney day, but very cold, ventured out to hang out washing, empty compost bucket and refill wood boxes then in again quickly

  6. We got snow down along the coast in Hampshire, which almost always we miss, it's gone now and today is sunny, but still loads of water around. We are staying inside most of the time, I hope Colin is feeling stronger today.

  7. We live on a small island, so how can it be that our weather is so different in parts of the UK? Here in Devon I think we got a small short-lived flurry of snow a week or two ago, since then our days alternate between beautiful sunshine and relentless rain. The last few days we've had a touch of frost over-night, but it soon goes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we're not experiencing the terrible weather everyone else seems to be going through at the moment, but I find it interesting. I also feel that here we're living in a bubble.

    1. Driving home from Cambridgeshire it was possible to watch the weather changing as the snow turned to rain as we went east.

  8. Oh I was so hoping you were safe and sound at home with all the nasty weather yesterday. I'm glad you're back there now though.

There are always little spit spots of colour if we take the time to look for them aren't they, that little Cyclamen looks a lonely but very lovely little splash of red.

    1. There are going to be lots of journeys to Addenbrookes over the next months - just hope we don't have too many with snow.

I was pleased to find we have several small clumps of cyclamen here in 3 or 4 different colours, not something I could persuade to grow at the smallholding

  9. It been miserable here, gale force winds, driving rain. Now thick Frist and ice. I had to go out this morning and it took 10 minutes to clear the screen. I would normally walk but I fell over during the last cold snap, so I wait until the sun has melted some of the paths now. More tonight!!

  10. Garden still looks like it has things growing in it! Everything here is covered with a thick blanket of snow. We got about 10 inches + over Christmas. Roads are terrible - our street is ice covered and solid snow. I don't think they've even been through with trucks - it's a little cold for that lol.

  11. Gorgeous here today, but yesterday it was awful. A small tree came down on the road on my way to work and the cars stopped both ways whilst the drivers got out and hauled it over to the verge so the traffic could get moving again.

  12. I liked the little trip around your garden - it is good to get out but not your journey to the hospital that must be so hard. Hope the blood test results were good.

  13. Love to see winter blooms surviving the cold. After a trip to hospital, you can relax and enjoy home for a while.

  14. I so admire your indomitable spirit Sue (and Col's too)
Those tiny snatches of colour in your garden just back up your words too. You have managed to find things to be positive about in spite of absolutely awful driving conditions.

  15. As an Australian I have zero concept of snow or the weather you describe. I have always promised myself a British white Xmas ..... but every Brit I mention that to just snorts in derision and tells me it is overrated. Ha ha.

  16. I do love the fact that you still have colour in your garden. It is very cold here and we are under a blanket of snow. Not as much snow as we could have, but at least we had a lovely white Christmas.

    God bless.
