December 29th and the New Diary

I had one of these this year and loved it, so sent for one again for 2018, this was my other Christmas present from Col. It's not as nice as 2017's........printed on better paper - too shiny, I liked it on re-cycled card

It's full of folklore, the moon phases and traditions from various parts of the country.

A favourite job for between Christmas and New Year is filling in the new diary - birthdays to start with and then lists and things to remember at the beginning and end. WI dates and speakers, dentist appointments and any other events that I already know the date of.

The hare on the front of the diary reminded me of my favourite Christmas card mentioned on the 3rd of this month, we also had lots of other lovely cards but among the cards were 3 I just didn't like. Am I the only ungrateful person who dislikes the pictures on some cards so much that I hide them under others!? or am I just odd?

Thank you for all the comments over the past few days, I have read all and appreciated but have been lapse at replying - apologies.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I'd love for you to share some of that folklore in this year's diary.

  2. We had one card that was so smothered in glitter that I was too after opening it....it seemed to be everywhere still, hours later even. I was cursing the sender under my breath the next day, when I was still finding bits of glitter.

    1. I was fiddling on line looking to see which charities had reduced price Christmas cards and found some nice looking ones but about a dozen people had complained about the glitter! Must be a common problem

  3. There were a handful of cards this year which I recycled straight away because I didn't like them for one reason or another!

  7. That is a lovely diary - I went and had a look at it on Amazon and you can guess the rest!! With Fairs and Auctions and birthdays, I need to get myself organized and as I love FOlklore and anything country-orientated, this is perfect for me.

  8. You are not alone, I hid a few cards at the back of the collection too. I always put cards from overseas at the front, I enjoy them more and I like to think of my distant friends.

  9. I always kept a Boots Scribbling diary and had a collection of 25 years worth I had filled. Mainly weather and farming and the occasional bit of personal life. I put them all on a bonfire when I moved here. I have bought a new one this year although I couldn't find a diary in Boots so I bought the nearest equivalent from a stationery shop. I am a creature of habit.

    1. My first ever diary was a Letts Schoolgirls diary in 1966. Doubt they exist anymore probably not allowed as sexist!

  11. That looks like an interesting Diary. I've bought a 'Five Year' one this year - I thought it would be interesting to look back over the years at the different weather thoughts and feelings etc, although I do suspect I will need another as well as sometimes I write a lot and there are smaller spaces in this one.

  13. I display all cards whether I like them or not. It's only fair to those that sent them.

I've had diaries for over 40 years and still have them. Started out as small, then as the years have gone on are now A5 with a day to a page. I normally manage to fill a page, starting with the weather and how I am feeling healthwise, finishing with things I've been thankful for that day. My daughter wants me to leave them to her when I've popped my clogs.

    1. Wow, A5 everyday is pretty good going. I suppose if I wrote the blog on paper it would fill a page too

  14. Yes some cards get pushed to the back, or are accidently out of sight behind the curtains ;-)

I do love a brand new diary, so much so I wait until I am feeling that my handwriting might be a little better, a little clearer and a lot neater before starting to fill in the bits and bobs and the first page ... and of course I have to find a new pen in the pen cup to keep with my diary so that the ink will match on the pages for as long as possible.

This year I have a new diary, a new scribble book, a new blank recipe book to write down all our most favourite recipes in (so that I'm not constantly looking for post-its etc) ... and as of the 1st there will be a brand new blog :-)

All the very best to you and Col, and all of your family for 2018. xx

  15. Yes I am the same with cards Sue - I love the wildlife ones and the robins and of course the hares. I think my favourite this year is of a fox - not particularly Christmassy but I have enjoyed it nevertheless.
    Happy New Year to both.

    1. Thank you Pat. We had some lovely Robin and winter scenes this year and one in the shape of a red phone box with a wreath hanging on the door which was unusual

  16. I bought one of those card holder things this year so all of the cards were out but not all could be clearly seen. Not sure I liked it much but it beat having to move them all if we wanted a dvd off the shelf.

  20. My mum always bought me the Dairy Diary every year from the milkman - it was full of recipes and hints and tips on entertaining or how to keep food fresh. I do miss it.
I have one or two editions of The Country Bizarre magazines which are full of similar folklore and now a collectible item - so hold on to your diaries you never know.

  21. Haha, some Christmas cards really are rather horrible, aren't they? I do put mine up, but on the back of the kitchen door rather than standing up as they annoy me!

  22. Wow that looks like a great diary! I love all the old lore and tales and enjoy reading them. I don't usually get a lot of Christmas cards - Mum and sisters for the most part but they always send such lovely ones. They seem to know me well! Daughter and I did join in a husky card exchange this year and got lots of lovely cards. I'm glad I don't get too many normally as I have trouble throwing them out!

  24. I have a new planner too. It was a search this year to find one I liked. Found one in early fall. Then thought maybe I should have waited. Picked a Mary Engelbreit planner as each week has a different design. May your new year be blessed and joyous moments in each day. I'm thankful u are blogging as many of my readers come from your site! Sweet! Hugs!
