Suffolk Show Part 2

Carrying on from yesterday......

I ate my sandwich - brought from home - while watching the showjumping but was still peckish so had a good look around the Food Hall, lots of  samples of cheeses and sausages and a teeny bit of venison after which I needed a drink so another free cuppa in the C of E Local Diocese tent.

I walked through the flower show tent, some gorgeous stands from the local area. Not quite up to Chelsea Flower show standard!
Mickfield Hostas are a local to me company and had a huge selection - made me want to start a collection again like I had at the smallholding years ago. But very expensive to buy from them compared to £3 that I bought one for from the fruit and veg shop in Leiston.
I looked in the bees and honey tent but ran out of energy to walk all round the wildlife area organised by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. This area of ponds, trees and wildflowers was established many years ago and is a permanent feature of the showground and cared for by the Trust.

Then the WI tent and the competitions. Did either of the WI's  I belong to win a prize?
This is an entry by Anna from Small WI - a cot quilt - beautiful and coming second I think but only the first gets a prize.
Here's the list of entries for the main competition. This year ...." A Playroom for a dolls house" Not as many entries as years ago. There are 40+ WI's in East Suffolk. Three things judged - Overall effect. A Hard Craft and a Soft Craft
This is Big WI entry, judges comments said things were out of proportion. 55/60

And Small WI's entry........  beaten by HALF A POINT! 58/60

This is the winner 58½/60

I could have had another free cuppa in the East Anglian Daily Times tent but decided I'd walked far enough so had an apple juice in the WI tent and started  heading back to the car park and met a parade of British Legion Standards on the way.

And finally, close to the exit gate on my way out...........I quite fancy one of these to put at the bottom of the meadow. Didn't bother to pick up a leaflet.....as they are about £14,000 fully fitted!
A long day out, I got home at 4.30 - exhausted!

One more short Suffolk Show post tomorrow ...........

Back Tomorrow

  1. Great photos - nearly as good as being there Sue! Thankyou. A friend has one of those Shepherds' Huts which she does Air BnB with - I think hers cost nearly twice that!!

  2. Well done small WI! The shepherd's hut is gorgeous, eye watering price for a shed on wheels but then I suppose it depends on spec and finish - and I imagine they are pretty special. You could certainly have fun in one with the grandchildren, or it could be your writing/reading den..

  3. Those little rooms are gorgeous. I've always wanted to make something like that - maybe I should!
The shed is fabulous and would be great in your garden. Such a shame about the price.
    Enjoy today.

  4. What a fun time you had at the fair. I loved the little rooms, the winner was a good one. I love miniatures so those appeal to me. I also would love to have a shepherd's caravan, all brightly painted with a wood stove inside. Have a fab weekend. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  5. Lovely photos and such nice things the shepherds van is really sweet but I bet it would be a bit chilly at lambing time

  6. I love a county show. Most of them are mid week term time though, so not been to any since I went full time (curse those children growing up!). I managed to take the kids to a Bushcraft show this week though, campfires, wood carving, shooting etc. They Loved it, and like all shows, we walked miles! I agree with you about being happy to go somewhere like that alone. There's always so much to see that being able to go tour own pace and route is an efficient way of getting round what can otherwise be too big an event. Glad you're enjoying it. Fingers crossed for more freebies on the final day.

  7. You must have been exhausted at the end of the day...I know I am after a County Show. I have coveted one of those shepherds huts for many a year...I shall continue to covet one for many years to come also! x

  8. I love that cot quilt, it's gorgeous, and way, way beyond my capabilities!
My friend Sue (very popular name in the late fifties) has a shepherd's hut in the garden, at the furthest end from the house. It's gorgeous, pale mossy green outside, and dark cream inside with two armchairs, two small folding side tables, a fold down desk with a folding chair, and a woodburner that keeps the place toasty warm in winter. She also has two lovely warm Alpaca throws for cool days/evenings. I love sitting in there in the winter with a hot chocolate, (and maybe a biscuit or two) nattering and setting the world to rights! Sue and I have been best friends since we met on our first day at primary school in 1962, so we're a bit like sisters, it's all very relaxing!
We don't have room for a shepherd's hut, the sheds, greenhouse, and Grandson's swing, slide, and play fort have taken up all the space!
Good to hear you're getting out and about, one day at a time Sue! X

  9. I hope there were plenty of loos on the site. You haven't complained so I assume there was. I limit the amount of drinks I have on a day out or I would be weeing all day! The dolls houses look good. I agree about the proportions that the judges said were out.

    1. I can remember the awful queues for the Ladies years ago when we went with mum. They've built lots of permanent ones since then so all very civilised.

  10. Sue, it looks like you had a lovely day and there was plenty to see. My friend has a Shepherds Hut at the very bottom of her garden she does Airbnb and it's very popular x

  11. Happy you had a decent day out, even if it was a bit exhausting. It always seems to me that when I finally decide to go home after one of these events, that the car feels three times as far away as I would like it to be. I'm sure you enjoyed your own cuppa (or two) when you got home. Thanks for taking us to the show.

  12. You really got to see a little bit of everything, what fun! I love the miniature playrooms. I always thought it would be fun to make miniatures. I bet you were exhausted by the time you got home.

  13. Thanks for taking us with you! I couldnt do that anymore but did years ago, usually assisting with horses at the Great Yorkshire Show.

  14. I’m keen on hostas but generally confine them to containers to be better able to monitor and control for snails and slugs. Most evenings I’ll rummage through the foliage to see if I can spot any incursions. I can image they were a bit expensive at the show. Most varieties I find bulk up fairly quickly so small and cheapish at a garden centre is fine with me.

  15. I love the cabin thingy! It would look lovely in your meadow for the grandchildren to play in.

  16. Glad to see you getting out and that you enjoyed the show. The only thing a County Show, or any agri show means for me is ~~~ WORK!!! lol

  18. violet was at the Suffolk Show yesterday with her Aunt. I was going to say that I haven't been since I was about her age, and I used to go round and collect all the free plastic carrier bags handed out (bet they don't do that any more!), but I'd be wrong. I worked for an agricultural magazine in the 90's, so I was there for a day back then. Instead, Bill and I went for afternoon tea at Hintlesham Hall, which was rather lovely and a lot less crowded.

They always have one of those huts in the garden area of the Suffolk Food Hall, it's not as expensive as the one you saw, but still quite a hefty price! They are nice, but not for that sort of money!!

Bet you were glad to get home, it has been pretty muggy this week. x

  19. Oooh! I'd fancy one of those for the bottom of my garden too! Shame about the price! It sounds like you had a lovely day out.

  20. Really enjoyed your posts about the Suffolk Show. We've never been, with my husband always at work those days. I did get to see the Suffolk Showground as a parent helper on a school trip though, and that was fab. Have you ever visied the Hadleigh Show? Smaller and a single day but still fun.

  21. Love the dolls house playroom entries. I think the 'out of proportion' one has a charm all of it's own ☺

Shepherds huts are getting posher and posher aren't they, our neighbour with the campsite has built some for guests, beautifully fitted out inside ... and each one cost him around 4k to make. He's currently working on a beautiful white one which is going to be the centrepiece of his wedding and then be used for future weddings on the campsite.
