An Art Exhibition

I had a good couple of hours in Eye on Friday visiting the Art Exhibition in the church.

I did a post on the church just a few weeks ago (HERE)  and had been planning to go back for the exhibition.
There were all sorts of art works in various mediums. Some I liked and some I didn't. I must have good taste as the pictures I liked most all had red dots on them - SOLD! already.
Prices ranged from about £30 up to several hundred.
Just a few photos.............

From the usual country views to a giant cauliflower painting!
I loved these............... textile art by Alison Kirk
Another group I liked - 3 sold already - I expect they've been bought by the same person to make a lovely display grouped together. Lino cuts by Mary Cousin
Just one potter exhibiting  there this year, interesting but not tempting enough to make me add to my jug collection
Several artists were also selling unframed works or cards and I bought a couple of cards to keep.

There were some stone sculptures, not mentioned in the catalogue, they were  standing on bales in front of something I didn't photograph when I was there last month............. Paintings of saints on the dado rail dating from 1500. See them in more detail  HERE
And the other Saints across the aisle

Perhaps my favourite thing in the whole exhibition was this. I would have loved to have this fella  standing in the garden, £190 is good for something with this much work in it but was a bit more than I was willing to spend!

I'd forgotten just how much I love visiting Art Exhibitions, we used to go regularly to amateur ones in Stowmarket and Needham Market many years ago before the smallholding took us across the county.
Then we sometimes we went to see the various professional exhibitions in the many galleries in Aldeburgh but some of those were positively weird!

  1. Harvest man is adorable! I don't like the price either, but I understand it. Beautiful work.
That looks like a nice day out. Bill and Violet are excited for the Heritage days coming up. They've got a little tradition going now, where they go around and look around some of the various buildings. I'm planning on tagging along this time though, I want to go and see Broomhill Swimming pool, it's on the list this year. Not been there since the 80's!

    1. I noted the date for the heritage weekend in my diary but hadn't looked to see what and where were open this year. I will def.go and see Broomhill too, after walking past it so many times in the year in town between Preston Drive and the Library. I love that they are finally hoping to reopen. I never went swimming there but the outdoor pool in Stowmarket was similar and I loved going there in my teens

  2. Some of those works of art are fantastic. I do love it when artists make cards with their work. They are so much more achievable, prove-wise, and make lovely gifts either to yourself or to others.

    1. A few of the artists were doing cards and they were lovely to look through. I could have chosen several but thought I'd better stick at 2!

  3. Great post Sue - nearly as good as being there. Loved the cards you bought (we have similar tastes I think). Such a selection of differing art styles on display, some I liked more than others. I could see the talent in that cauliflower painting, but is anyone really going to have that on their wall?!

The Harvestman carving is very skilful too, and I don't think overpriced, when you consider the hours of work that went into it. That's the trouble with anything which is a decorative craft - it is so difficult to get a true value on the time and effort involved (especially in hand sewing!)

    1. I don't know why I didn't take more photos - especially of some of the expensively priced paintings that I wouldn't have let in the house!

  4. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the Art Exhibition and that maybe it will give you a new direction to explore or return to.
The standard at the one you've just been to looked really good. I like your choices and the cauliflower looked fun too.

    1. There were some good paintings - lots of animals and birds and country scenes.
I shall look out for more local exhibitions to visit

  5. Harvest man is lovely, a little bit of Lincolnshire there! You have admirable restraint, that was a nice exhibition but packed with temptation. I always succumb and buy cards, much more in line with my budget.

I had to smile when I read BB's comment about the cauliflower, my gaze had lingered on it, too. The cottage I lived in before this one, had the perfect kitchen for it ... oh well, 13 years too late!

    1. I'm not sure I would want the cauliflower on the wall for very long.

  6. I try to buy local art when I can. There usually is so much local talent around that there is no need to go elsewhere. I also have granddaughters who are talented artists. My walls are full.

    Harvest Man is wonderful.

    1. I used to buy paintings and prints from car boot sales, but we had so many that after moving twice I decided not to buy more.

    1. Good Idea although Finding out about things going on in Suffolk is sometimes quite difficult, unless you happen to be in the right place at the right time to see a poster!

  9. As an artist who has dabbled in many mediums - I adore art shows. I try to buy at least something to support artists in their endeavors. Your favorite stone sculpture is wonderful, but indeed.. quite a chunk of $$! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
